Hey everyone, happy new year. I am covered by ACC but they dont cover any treatment or travel costs while outside NZ.

So I am looking for a travel insurer in NZ,

1. The insurance must have a minimum cover of Euro 30,000 for all medical costs

2. Costs of an emergency repatriation to New Zealand

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

It's impossible to give any recommendations with such minimal requirements. Probably every travel insurance policy sold in NZ would meet those requirements.

But to answer your question in a broad sense there is very little that differentiates most travel insurance providers in NZ other than price. Ultimately they're all backed by only a handful of large re insurers. FWIW I use 1cover for my annual worldwide policy.

And when you say you're "covered by ACC" does that mean you have existing medical issues that ACC are covering? If so you obviously need to declare these to any travel insurance provider because if you don't they may deny all cover if you don't declare pre existing conditions.

I've always gone with Southern Cross Travel Insurance (SCTI), it's very easy to do it all online. Have a look at their policy wording and the amounts they'll cover (and what they won't cover) to see if it's the right fit for you.

If you have Southern Cross Health Insurance you get a discount, too.

I still buy travel insurance for travel in NZ.

ACC doesn't cover cancelled flights, additional accomodation/travel costs and additional checked baggage compensation.

I use Air NZ insurance locally and Southern Cross internationally who have very reasonable costs for pre existing conditons coverage and a 5% discount for SCHS members.

We always use Southern Cross Travel Insurance.

Never had to make a claim, so don't know how easy that process is, but it's relatively inexpensive and the coverage always appears to be pretty good.

What are peoples views on insurance offered by the likes of ANZ Airports Platinum? Seems to be OK. Looking to take the family to the states soon and was planning to just use this

I am member of SC and we use Southern Cross for international travel.

Haven't bothered for local travel except for my AA Plus membership.

For basic cover it's fine.

My biggest concern is for emergency cover - if you're in urgent need of medical care (particularly in the US) the last thing you want to be doing is dealing with a call centre who firstly want to know the date you booked your trip and the day it was billed to your credit card so they can check your entitlement for cover which is how things work.

We used the insurance on our Westpac Airpoints Platinum card when going on our last long haul trip back at the end of 2018. Had to make a claim for theft and although the excess was higher than other insurers ($200 instead of $100 from researching other providers, but we were already aware of that anyway), they were very good to deal with and the claim was accepted within a few days. I'd make sure you read all the small print especially for travel to the US and medical cover over there.

Didn't end up utilising them on our Christmas trip to Oz last month since the excess and the additional premium for my pre-existing condition were not worth it so ended up going with Southern Cross who are quite competitive price wise for the same cover as other insurers, and we got the member discount as well.

My biggest issue with SCTI is that they offer no cover inside NZ - cover only begins when you leave NZ.

This could mean for example that a significant delay after you'd left your home or being involved in say an accident on the way to the airport which impacted your travel would not necessarily offer you any cover under their policy.

Journey means your time away from New Zealand, which commences on your start date of journey and ceases on your end date of journey.

My 1cover policy defines a journey as this and offers cover from when you leave home.

‘Journey’ means your journey from the time when you leave your home to go directly to the place you depart from on your travels, and ends when you return to your home on or before the last day of cover under the certificate of insurance.

Interestingly, southern cross has a start and end date on their policies, but they cover travel delays. Hopefully they're ok when we claim for our delayed trip back due to a tropical cyclone... should be fine.

Nope, no medical issues, just know that I have acc since I had a small operation done some 5 years ago thats all.
