Part of my history is the travel industry. People going overseas we always use to recommend at least photo copy your documents (passport tickets etc) and put a set in your checked in luggage just in case.

Of course now having a copy of any sort of document is fraught with possibilities of misuse.

So I ask the question of the geekzone good folk where do you suggest keeping copys, backups etc (whatever you want to call them) when travelling?

That sounds significant, and safe !

I am hoping to find some solution that is safe but the access and setup is achievable by the average Joe in the street

I don't keep copies of anything like that when I travel. Less risk.

Most places wont take photocopies/digital anyway.

Long as I'm insured and have funds tucked away for emergencies, I'm happy.

I'm not a paranoid type, but storing personal documents on a cloud system (Google, MS, anyone) still runs risk of being hacked/leaked/locked in my view, so why risk it.

I have several important numbers (eg passport number) stored in my password safe (app on my phone and also stored and synced to several other places for backup purposes).

For travel documents (airline tickets, insurance policy, etc) these have usually been emailed to me and I print them out so I have physical copies. The original emails I leave in a folder in my Gmail account so I can access them again if necessary.

i have a copy of my 2FA app on my desktop and laptop so if i loose a phone im still able to get into things

It can be linked to SMS, 2FA apps or email. My phone is locked at all times unless I am using it, 2FA app on the home screen will not display the code. My own machine's are trusted so even if I lose one device, I can still access my services from another devices that does not requires 2FA since it's part of the trusted group. All the devices are encrypted (bitlocker etc) so even if someone stole my laptop, good luck reading anything off it. I have SMS option disabled for 2FA since someone can just pop my SIM otherwise into another spare phone they might and get the codes.

My paranoia when I travelled was losing my passport. That can be one of your worst nightmares!. I also keep a $20 usd note in my travel wallet just in case.

Yes that is also a consideration these days losing or having your phone stolen (300 a day in London now). Making sure its backed up somewhere seriously important.

I use notes on my iPhone - copies of all our documents - held in the cloud, but protected biometrically.

Assume it's safe - likely isn't.

I have noted that the responses so far do not define the purpose of document copies, just the methods of storing copies.

I have always assumed that the purpose of these copies is that all the information needed to get replacement documents is included. However the risk here is that a scanned or photocopied document makes it very clear what the document data is - a drivers licence etc. I generally keep a text copy of the data which can make it less clear to others what the data is.

Are there any circumstances where a copy of a passport page or DL is of advantage rather than text copy of the same data? Just curious

u2f key that I carry, and have a spare that is somewhere safe. A phone is not a second factor if you are using SMS.

I keep a photocopy of my passport, ESTA, and a few other things in my carry-on luggage. With no need to access encrypted online storage with a bazillion possible points of failure I can show anyone an approximation of travel documents if the originals get lost or stolen. In terms of threats... the threat is being caught without travel documents, not someone getting their hands on a crappy photocopy of a passport with no actual value for ID purposes, apart from, in my case, showing that I allegedly had a passport that allegedly looked like that.

When travelling (which isn't as frequent as I'd like) I physically tether my phone to myself using one of those springy yoyo things they hand out at work to attach your ID card.

Looks a bit dorky and it's a bit inconvenient but it prevents loss from falling out of pockets or leaving behind and makes it just that bit more difficult to snatch for would-be thieves.

Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.
