All of NZ's 777s are already grounded, most are in long term "storage" and I wouldn't any to be in service in the near future ( if ever)

Air NZ (any airline) Should charge half price for a seat in their 777 if they ever make it back - pretty ancient things

The article is misleading. United Airlines has 96 777s, not 24. Only 24 of these are being removed from service, although some may already be grounded due to COVID. This directive applies only to 777s with the P&W engines, not Rolls Royce or GE engines. Without reading it, it sounds like the inspection interval has just been reduced and those aircraft are likely past the new inspection interval.

The average age of the Air NZ 777-200s is 13.8 years, a little over half the age of the aircraft which experienced the failure. The engine may not be that old of course. Air NZ uses Rolls Royce engines, so this directive does not apply.

IMO, the 777 is probably the safest aircraft in the sky.

Only a specific type of P&W too.
The directive says stepped up inspection cycle doesn’t it? That doesn’t meant they’re grounded. Airlines such as United may choose to, as there are likely plenty of spare planes to use. This option may be easier in the short term.

Never mind, I see there’s a update, recommending operational suspension at the moment.

That was a pretty impressive engine destruction, Its bloody lucky the cowling hit the ground outside, could have made quite the mess if it hit a house and or a person or a person and or people inside said house.

After seeing the pictures, I think it's a freaking miracle the plane landed safely! I am glad I wasn't on that flight. The 777-300 is my favourite plane behind the 787. I know this is the 777-200.

It's worth noting it's a very small number of 777's that are grounded - 59 in total. This is mere fraction of the total number still flying (not including all the ones grounded).

It only related to the specific P&W engine used, which is only on non ER aircraft (ie some of the very first 777-200 and 777-300 aircraft built) before the -ER models took over as the primary aircraft being sold. Air NZ only have -ER aircraft.

The 777 is without a doubt one of the safest and most reliable aircraft ever built.

Entered service 1995. First fatality of a plane crash nature = 2013.

They do seem to catch fire when on the ground a bit too much tho'.

The 777 is one of my favourite planes. Built in an era when Boeing had a reputation for safety.
