we went to parts of malaysia in 07. stayed mainly in kuching on the island of borneo. very much wellington in terms of being close to nature yet still in a city. found it great fun. everything was pretty much in walking distance and tours were easy to book after arrival. the matang wildlife sanctuary was cool. theres also a cultural village in sarawak which was fun and educational giving an insight into traditional malay living.

we also went to kl. enjoyed that too. did most of the tourist things there. stayed just opposite the times square shopping centre. transport was a breeze with the monorail through the city. went to the selangor pewter factory which was pretty cool. batu caves were filthy as it was the day after the week long festival they had but still worth a look

hope this helps somewhat.

ps if you go to borneo check the travel safety warnings as some parts (closer to indonesia) are extrememly dangerous and have very high chances of kidnappings

I Had a mate who lived there for a coupkle of years.  He lived in Penang & stayed with him for a week.  Everything was sooo cheap!  You can't swim there but - too polluted.

Great place, great people, GREAT food!  Roti & fish curry for breakfast!! Hmmm

Cheers, Stevo

Malaysia is one of my favourite places to visit. KL's great for shopping and eating. Close proximity to other touristy attractions likes the Batu Caves etc.

Also went to Langkawi for a few days - superb. Langkawi is also duty free so crazy cheap alcohol and the like ;) Stayed at the Sheraton Langkawi Beach Resort which had really great swimming beaches - sat in the sea for about 5 hours straight on one of the days!

Malaysian, and hometown is Kuching. :-D

If you're an eco-tourist, you must hop over to East Malaysia (Borneo) to Sawarak and Sabah.

I have only been to Kuala Lumpur, but caught a train from Singapore to get there

As far as transport goes, you wont need a car, around town you can catch the mono rail, and this ends up in KL sentral Train station where you can catch trains to the airport or down to singapore if you have 9 hours free ;)

Taxis are very cheap, an average ride was 10 MYR ringgit when i was there that worked out at approx $4 NZDollars. and this was for a 5-15 minute taxi ride around town

If you go from the airport into the city, you can catch a taxi, but DO NOT catch the non official ones, they will be 3 x the price, go to the stand and you will pay 60 MYR 25-30NZDollars to go into town

or go downstairs and catch the train

I am going back in July on the way to China,

If you are into theme parks, (its not a big one) but the views are awesome, check out Genting highlands
its only about 12-15 NZ dollars to buy a ticket at KL Sentral and go 60kms on the bus, then up a 3.8km cable car gondola and then entry into theme park with rides and back

People are friendly, i went for Formula 1 and it was packed, but awesome place

Check out Berjaya Time Square (http://www.timessquarekl.com/) as they have 5 floor indoor theme park, and Imax, and several cineplex.

As for getting from KLIA (KUL) to city central (XKL), if there's only 2 of you, catch the KLIA-Ekspress (http://www.kliaekspres.com/) RM35 oneway per adult and you'll reach the transport hub in 35mins.

I love Malaysia!! While they are a Muslim country they are not overly strict. Malaysian airlines are fantastic, and quite often have great deals for business class. They serve booze (well at least in business class)  so dont worry about that. Food on board is also great esp if you like Malaysian food :)

Langawi is really cool, you can eat at he night markets for about $4NZ for two people, and dont worry about getting crook as we didnt eating all over the place in markets and side streets for 2 weeks.

People are really friendly and helpful and shopping is great. We are ging back in  May, Yay!!

Peninsular Malaysia or Borneo ?

Climb Mt Kinabalu if going to Borneo, it’s one of the best memories I have. Easiest 14,000ft mountain to climb in the world

Was posted to the RAAF base at Butterworth in 1979 and spent all my off time on the island of Penang. Really loved it. Back then there were only ferries to and from the main land (Butterworth) Returned with my partner in 2010 there are now 2 bridges and no ferries and it is quite built up. They have placed protections on the old parts, mainly George Town. Stayed at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel in the Heritage Wing Suite (special deal). This time round saw all the heritage sites and did most of the tourist things. Places of Interest & Sightseeing in Penang

A must see though is a small family owned bar called the Hong Kong Bar (google it) in the old part of George Town. This has been a maritime/serviceman's bar since 1927. Unfortunately it had a fire in 2000 and a lot of the memorabilia was destroyed. However the photo albums were not. These albums go back to the beginning and does include photos of the Japanese occupation forces enjoying their R 'n' R at the bar. I enjoyed many a long night, sober & drunk, at this bar. Fearing the worst with the albums I took my photos when I returned in 2010 to present to the owners. They quickly dived into the slightly smoke & water damaged albums of 1979 and pulled out the originals. Nearly bought tears to my eyes. They still ran a 'tab' for the 'stayers', they used to cash bank rate travellers cheques, T-shirts, free hot & cold snacks, and of course the obligatory photo's. My partner could never understand my love affair with this bar in a foreign land - he did after that night. All the patrons during our visit were current and past military (Kiwi, Aussie & UK). This bar has an atmosphere that I have never experienced in any other bar around the world. A must visit.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

As @chiefie suggested , take the train into town if you have little luggage.  KLIA Ekspress.

If you are too tired to lug suitcases, then use the designated taxi kiosk at the airport and refrain from using random ones

trying to get you cheap fares.

Its visa on arrival for NZ passports but they will scan both your index fingers to take your finger prints.

If you are changing money eg: US to Ringitt , use a money changer.   Better rates than banks for larger amounts and larger denominations get better rates  eg:  a US$100 vs  US$100 in $1 bills.

Do try the Nasi Lemak   I just love it.  Use food courts as they are very affordable and delicious. Nearly all big malls

have them,   If you want to try shopping  there is Mega mall.  But I think there is a larger one that is open.

If you want to escape the heat take a trip to Genting Highlands.

I got a sim card with data from a provider in town.   Make sure that the sim they provide gets messages like credit balance data used, etc in English.

A nuisance if you dont speak the lingo Bahasa Malaysia, you can get this corrected but takes 24 hrs for it to activate.  Make sure that the sim is

working before you walk out of the door of the service provider.

Be  a bit vigilant and keep an eye on your wallet.  just normal common sense.

If you have time, why not do a side trip to Singapore!

cheers
