My folks will soon be holidaying in Oz .... I see that when returning they can use the on-line NZ Traveller Declaration, but the information for going to Australia is confusing.

Some online information suggests they have a digital declaration available, other parts say it's still a card .... although I did find that Qantas flights were 'trialing' their digital version.

Anyone been to Australia lately and know the true situation please?

We went over to the Gold Coast about 3 weeks ago. There may be a digital version available but we just completed the card that was handed to us by the flight attendent just after take off.

I went in March and it was a physical card. Physical cards are also available for NZ if desired (I ended up having to do one because the online system "lost" my record).

My understanding (based on what I could find before we flew to Brisbane in May) is the electronic option flying into Aussie is still in the early stages and only available to Aussie citizens and only flying with Qantas, at least that was the case in May. For everyone else and all other flights into Aussie, it's still the paper declaration card.

Australian DTD is for AU/NZ Citizens flying on Qantas into Brisbane, and is accessed in the Qantas App, anyone can still do a paper form

New Zealand DTD for any passport holder coming into NZ they can either do the Digitial Declaration through the NZTD app (not airline app) or fill out the paper form if they prefer

Thanks again, all ..... how about laptops and tablets?

Still need to remove from bag going through security?  I'd heard that no longer necessary somewhere.

Depends on Airport if they have upgraded their machines

Wellington international, I left everything in my bag, same with Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland

Last time I went through Brisbane I still had to take them out (2024 October)

Wellington Domestic has not been upgraded, neither has Auckland

As of 3 weeks Ago, you could leave laptops/tablets in bags in Wellington Domestic,   also Queenstown..

Leaving New Zealand, generally are left in the bag and the machine will see through it, that also includes any liquids or gels (still have to be under 100g/100ml).

Leaving Brisbane, they still have the old machines which means everything out of the bag (All laptops, iPads, Liquids and Gels).

All other airports are the same as New Zealand.

X-ray vs CT scanners.

They'll tell you when warranted. Usually in the form of stern loud instructions to everyone inline. (And the info boards as you're approaching)

Just don't bust out phones and cameras in aus until in public areas.

I flew from Auckland to Christchurch and back again in late May and both times the advice at security was to leave electronics in your bags, which is what I did with my laptop, and it was fine.
