Hi everyone,

I've booked a return flight to Sydney. My passport expires about three months after the trip. Apparently Australia doesn't have the "your passport must be valid for an extra six months" thing that some countries do, so I didn't expect any issues.

However, Air NZ has sent me a "plan your trip" email, which says to check that my passport is valid for an additional six months. Is this just a generic message that they send to everyone, or is there actually a requirement here that I'm not aware of?

I'm not planning any more trips in the next few years so I don't really want to renew the passport if I don't need to.

That covers Australia's position, but not NZ's or Air NZ's.

Passports are a Customs domain. Air NZ don't care about passports, their job is to move you from A to B.

Fair call, permit me to go a little off-topic for a minute, however be aware that if you require Photo ID for Proof of Identity purposes for any Anti-Money Laundering (AML) stuff with banks etc, if your passport is expired you might encounter an issue.

I am aware of older folk who have had such issues, when they decided to not renew their passport and then had to get a valid birth certificate in the current format to go with their drivers license to satisfy AML requirement. Others that had neither a drivers license nor a valid passport were a bit stuck.

I think you'll find airlines flying passengers internationally do actually care about passports. If they let you board their aircraft without completing appropriate documentation checking and then you are denied entry at the destination country due to a passport problem, the airline becomes responsible for returning you to where you came from.

My NZ passport expires in Feb, so three months away. I used it last month to visit Sydney city centre whilst in transit en route to the UK on my UK passport. I had no issues.

In the grand scheme of things, having a current passport with >6 months of validity is not a huge cost. It would be cheaper than needing one rushed last minute.

AirNZ do care about passports. If they transport you to a place where you are ineligible to enter they can get fined.

I think that covers it.

^^ This. We flew Air NZ to/from Oz in May with our passports expiring three months after our return - with no problems. Researched it before we went and ran with the rules.

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

Thanks all. I just wasn't sure whether there was an Air NZ policy, but it would appear that as long as your passport is valid in each country then it's fine.

I would renew your passport. Cost is only going to get dearer, and all it takes is for one w**ker at check in to ruin your day. I used to fix the self service koisks at Air New Zealand and I used to hear all sorts of nonsense from Air NZ staff being difficult...

Taking this thread a bit off topic:

I renewed my passport last week, submitted the online application mid afternoon on Tues and the new passport was dispatched Thurs afternoon, arrived by courier first thing on Fri morning. It Just Worked™

I decided to bite the bullet and sat on hold for 30 minutes... and Air NZ confirmed that it's a generic message and that for Australia it just needs to be valid on the day. I've taken a copy of it just in case, but I'm not expecting issues.

Off topic but I had a similar experience, I had a verified RealMe account and my passport renewal was a breeze online.
It is super handy as ID for account and application things. I don't know where I have put my birth cert 😅.

Btw OP, hoping you have a safe and easy travel to Aus.

Thanks. I hope so too! This is attempt 2 after getting stuck in the cyclone back in March. Trying Sydney instead of GC this time.
