Maybe I'm naive, because I've been out of the game for a while.

I've come across anti-fascist "antifa" merchandise, such as t-shirts and stickers, with pictures of Ivo Lola Ribar.

Ivo Lola Ribar died during WW2, a Yugoslav communist politician and WW2 military leader.

He was literally anti-fascist and anti-Nazi in that he fought against Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany.

I'd say Ivo is was more pro-Allies, Communist than anti-fascist.

I'm guessing Ivo is the, well frankly, ignorant hipsters equivalent of Che Guevara.

As an aside, I remember talking in college to a hipster who had Pol Pot t-shirt, without knowing about his massacre of intellectuals and city residents. She wasn't being ironic; She had no idea of she would have probably been killed if she lived in Cambodia at the time.

American ignorance is so well-known it doesn't even surprise anymore. Americans must be the most uninformed people in the so-called 'developed' world.

Jimmy Kimmel, Jay Leno, and other TV hosts, usually interview Californians knowledge.

According to the NAEP, "California's average score is significantly lower than the [US] national public."

It's worse than a number of "deep South" states.

However if you ask a typical Californian "Which Kardashian family member was arrested for a DUI and served jail time, and in what year?", they'd probably do well ;)

I don't have the impression that there's a strong correlation between "hipster" and "antifa".

In fact the reverse - there seems to be an association between hipster and the organised alt-right movement (as opposed to fascist/white supremacist thugs, skinheads etc).

Urban dictionary has some good associations.

One of my favourites ....... "Harbors a social superiority with lack of civility or natural intelligence". Well bugger me ....... exactly the same as a right wing extremist!

Ain't life funny ....... until you grow older and realize you have heard these arguments time and time again and NOTHING has changed.

Urban dictionary is a waste of space for the purposes you're using it.  The definition contributions by far right individuals of their "opposition" might be "amusing" to people like you - but are of course they are wildly off the mark.

Gosh I certainly hope you are not suggesting I have far right tendencies, because nothing could be farther from the truth. To a centrist like me, yes I do it find it amusing, but also quite sad. I find it amusing because extremists generally exhibit a very obvious (and generally ill placed) social superiority and lack of civility. More importantly there is often displayed an inability to step back for a few minutes and fully consider another's point of view. Read my post again. It is not a swing at just the alt left, nor is it a swing at just the alt right. It is a swing at both extremes.

The problem I have is that the POTUS and alt:right are - with some success - portraying all people opposed to fascism as members of an organised "antifa" movement.

Being a "little bit fascist" or "a little bit racist" - even if that's unconscious - actually isn't okay.  There is no valid defense for that, and it's absolutely not "extremist" to resist.
