Although the election is still a few months away, I thought it would be a good idea to create a thread discussing the candidates, especially since it will be an open field as Phil Goff isn't running again.

The Spinoff has run some profiles on the main ones: https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/28-01-2022/who-wants-to-be-aucklands-mayor

I see a few familiar faces from the last election, but no one really stands out as being worthy of getting my vote (yet). I guess it depends how they all go at the debates?

Aucklanders, what are your picks?

The article is old. It took me a while to catch up. Since then Phil Goff has made it offical he will not run.

In turn the Labour Party has officially endorsed Efeso Collins - https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/462465/labour-endorses-efeso-collins-for-auckland-mayoralty

This one is a bit more up-to-date, with the three now-main candidates: https://www.newsroom.co.nz/podcast-the-detail/who-will-be-the-next-mayor-of-auckland

Gonna vote Efeso. We've seen how ineffective the position is, from a development, planning and transport perspective. It's largely a ceremonial role but I think he'd be excellent at it.

Any thoughts on Leo Molloy? I'm (apparently) distantly related to him and a family member can't stop going on about how great he is, she'd vote for him if she could, and also how Phil Goff would have raised rates and Leo won't, etc etc etc.

The mayor doesnt have that much real power.
So any promises are just talk .

The mayor is a figurehead, not a dictator . They can promise anything, but if councilors refuse to vote those promises in......

Interesting polling results so far. I'm probably going to vote for Efeso as well - it looks like he'll need all the help he can get. A lot of "Undecided"s there.

Also: https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/local-government/129068061/gloves-off-in-auckland-mayoral-race-as-leo-molloy-turns-on-efeso-collins

Leo seems a bit too combative for my liking.

He seems a bit of an ahole to me.

He was proposing spraying cold water on people, in the town centre, that he described as scum.

I know the people he was describing tend to have problems. But, cold water on them, especially, this time of year!

I don't think that would solve anything, and would almost certainly make things worse.

I must admit I haven't seen the interview (can't stand Guy Williams) but it sounds like it was a bit of a trainwreck. I'm not surprised with the response from his opponents - it all sounded a bit un-necessary to me. What is Molloy trying to prove? A boxing match with a TV host? If it was for a charity, sure, but what was the point of this stunt otherwise?

Edit; okay, this explains it a bit better: https://thespinoff.co.nz/tv/15-07-2022/what-was-guy-williams-trying-to-do

Just as yourself what an Auckland run by a friend and supporter of Brian Tamaki would look like and you probably have your answer.

I meant "ask" yourself, edit function doesn't seem to be working.

Oh I won't be going anywhere near the guy with my vote at all. Leo seems like he has a big mouth and talks a big game, but doesn't have much in the way of planning to back it up what he (says he) wants to do.

Fourth time round for John Palino? Dunno how this is meant to work when he doesn't even live here.

The candidates for Auckland mayor all suck frankly.

Molloy is an utter cretin. Viv Beck has helped to ruin Auckland’s city centre. John Palino doesn’t even live here.

Craig Lord maybe shows promise on the face of it, but he’s an unknown quantity and I don’t think he could achieve much.

Efeso Collins will certainly get my vote. At least he has (mostly) okay ideas and has been a councillor already.
