It is a sad reflection of where we have come that commentators on 'liberal' media like CNN and MSNBC are praising Trump for acting normal instead of the way he usually behaves.

freitasm:

You missed the point. The expression "But her emails" is about whataboutism. It is about people trying to deflect instead of tackling the real problems.

It also misses the point that she wasn't the first or the last to use a non-government email for government business. In fact Colin Powell had used an AOL address during his time as Secretary of State. This lead to a bit of a problem after he left and they needed to archive his communications and had to make a special request to AOL. Not to mention that Jared Kushner and Ivanka have been conducting their Whitehouse business using a privately hosted mail server. But her emails indeed.

New Statesman America - Trump is not a president doing his best with a bad system. He is making a bad system worse

16 March 2020

The US is trying to catch up with the rest of the world as the president continues to undercut experts.

Gripped by a pandemic, Americans believe they can rely on their own gumption and strength of character to get through it all.

But this overlooks a more immediate problem: the deleterious role of Donald Trump and his administration. The list of mistakes is breathtaking.

The US did not use the test template approved by the World Health Organization; instead, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention created its own.

The Food and Drug Administration also prevented academic hospitals from developing their own tests to detect Covid-19 until 29 February, nearly six weeks after the first US case was detected on 19 January.

According to Politico, the administration also refused to test people early and often: Trump believed that the lower the number of known cases, the better his chances of re-election. ...

Even now, Trump - who disbanded the White House’s pandemic preparedness team in 2018 - is finding it difficult to tell the nation that we are in the midst of a crisis. ...

In addition to giving European governments no prior warning of the travel ban, Trump also tried to buy for the US exclusive rights to a possible coronavirus vaccine being trialled by a German firm.

At present, the US is trying to catch up with the rest of the world on testing, travel screenings, social distancing and isolation, as the president continues to misinform the public, undercut experts, and tout how he has improved the economy (although this is now in such a crisis that on 15 March the Federal Reserve cut interest rates to zero).

Trump is not a president doing his best with a bad system and a worsening situation; he is actively making a bad system in a bad situation worse.

https://www.reddit.com/r/politics/comments/fi5mfb/megathread_president_donald_trump_declares

January 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine.”

February 2: “We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.”

February 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA… Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”

February 25: “CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus.”

February 25: “I think that's a problem that’s going to go away… They have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we’re very close to a vaccine.”

February 26: “The 15 (cases in the US) within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.”

February 26: “We're going very substantially down, not up.”

February 27: “One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”

February 28: “We're ordering a lot of supplies. We're ordering a lot of, uh, elements that frankly we wouldn't be ordering unless it was something like this. But we're ordering a lot of different elements of medical.”

March 2: “You take a solid flu vaccine, you don't think that could have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona?”

March 2: “A lot of things are happening, a lot of very exciting things are happening and they’re happening very rapidly.”

March 4: “If we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better.”

March 5: “I NEVER said people that are feeling sick should go to work.”

March 5: “The United States… has, as of now, only 129 cases… and 11 deaths. We are working very hard to keep these numbers as low as possible!”

March 6: “I think we’re doing a really good job in this country at keeping it down… a tremendous job at keeping it down.”

March 6: Anybody right now, and yesterday, anybody that needs a test gets a test. They’re there. And the tests are beautiful…. the tests are all perfect like the letter was perfect. The transcription was perfect. Right? This was not as perfect as that but pretty good.”

March 6: “I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it… Every one of these doctors said, ‘How do you know so much about this?’ Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president.”

March 6: “I don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn't our fault.”

March 7: “We’ll hold tremendous rallies...I’m not concerned at all.”

March 8: “We have a perfectly coordinated and fine tuned plan at the White House for our attack on coronavirus.”

March 9: “This blindsided the world.”

Added from below.

March 10: "Our CoronaVirus Team has been doing a great job. Even Democrat governors have been VERY complimentary!"

March 11: "I am fully prepared to use the full power of the Federal Government to deal with our current challenge of the CoronaVirus!"

March 12: "108 countries are dealing with the CoronaVirus problem, some of which we are helping!"

March 13: "To this point, and because we have had a very strong border policy, we have had 40 deaths related to CoronaVirus. If we had weak or open borders, that number would be many times higher!"

March 13: "Today I am declaring a national emergency. Two very big words."

March 13: "No, I don't take responsibility at all. Because we were given a set of circumstances, given rules, regulations, and specifications from a different time. It wasn't meant for this kind of an event, with the kind of numbers that we are talking about."

March 13. "We have very strong emergency powers under the Stafford Act ... I have it memorized, practically, as to the powers in that act. And if I need to do something, I'll do it. I have the right to do a lot of things that people don't even know about."

The Verge: Contrary to Trump’s claim, Google is not building a nationwide coronavirus screening website

Instead, Verily is building a triage website just for the San Francisco Bay Area

Google is not working with the US government in building a nationwide website to help people determine whether and how to get a novel coronavirus test, despite what President Donald Trump said in the course of issuing an emergency declaration for the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, a much smaller trial website made by another division of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, is going up. It will only be able to direct people to testing facilities in the Bay Area.

More than an hour after Trump’s press conference, a Google communications Twitter account passed along the following statement from Verily, which is a different company inside the Alphabet corporate umbrella:

We are developing a tool to help triage individuals for Covid-19 testing. Verily is in the early stages of development, and planning to roll testing out in the Bay Area, with the hope of expanding more broadly over time. We appreciate the support of government officials and industry partners and thank the Google engineers who have volunteered to be part of this effort.

Carolyn Wang, communications lead for Verily, told The Verge that the “triage website” was initially only going to be made available to health care workers instead of the general public. Now that it has been announced the way it was, however, anybody will be able to visit it, she said. But the tool will only be able to direct people to “pilot sites” for testing in the San Francisco Bay Area, though Wang says Verily hopes to expand it beyond California “over time.”

Will the COVID-19 Pandemic be the disaster that ensures Trump wins the 2020 election? I think so.

- his response so far has been 'perfect' and all of his supporters will see it this way

- everything is Obama's fault and if you say it enough the easily swayed will believe it

- with the powers he now has, he can nearly do whatever. The response will be 'perfect' and the 'greatest response ever.......greater than WW2'

- giving all US Citizens a cheque (check?) will show masterful leadership as part of his 'perfect' response

- he's playing the racist tag by calling COVID-19 the Chinese disease. Once again, those easily swayed will believe him.

In times of a crises people look to strong leadership. Nobody will care that he stuffed up so hugely to begin with and is an idiot. All they will remember is he sent them some money, instead of bailing out the big guys......even though he'll do that as well.

We're doomed for another 4 years.....that's if we survive the coming apocalypse.

If there's an election he should win it.

But he may not need an election to stay in power.

The Washington Post - Trump claims China travel restrictions prove he took coronavirus ‘very seriously.’ There are two major problems with that.

March 19, 2020

After adjusting his tone on the novel coronavirus in recent days, President Trump has set about arguing - against oodles of evidence to the contrary - that he took the virus “very seriously” from the start.

And to make his case, he’s again pointing to his decision to halt travel from China six weeks ago.

He has repeatedly claimed that there was widespread opposition to the restrictions and has thus hailed it as a bold step.

But there are two major problems with that.

The first is that there actually wasn’t anything amounting to the resistance he described, and the second is that his move actually came after the airlines had already said they would stop service to China. ...

As soon as the numbers look real bad for him.

He will claim its because of the Chinese Virus and of course the Impeachment hoax and claim a do over.

He has filled all sorts of public offices with "temps" so he does not need approval from Congress for them.

They will be  important when he starts his coup.

as soon as possible. don't you worry when he declares martial law he will put Jared Kushner/Ivanka as number 2. If he gets infected they will rule.

The problem is that the numbers (popularity poll) may not look bad for him.

The diversion to deliberately antagonise China is something he'll keep using and if China retaliates, it'll probably add even more support for Trump.  He'll keep milking this trend (that he deliberately helped spike):
