One good question I've seen repeated everywhere: with so much surveillance and with perpetrator posting so much "content" publicly in the last few days, how come security services didn't know this?

My view is because we do not have proper a security service. (Not questioning their competency, but that maybe it doesn't exist.)

I wonder if the government is going to revamp the way they look at national security. It is obvious that it is nowhere near up to scratch.

We do but like our Defense Forces they are woefully under funded and under equipped

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Good idea. We could rush through some legislation real quick. No need for pesky consultation- it's a crisis!

Grow up and take your petty crap somewhere else. You are behaving like a spoiled child.

I get the feeling that there will be serious implications for legal firearms owners as a result of this.

NPCtom:

The http://givealittle.co.nz/cause/christchurch-shooting-victims-fund page is down. Most likely due to increased traffic.

Watching the coverage on TV and online, I've been desperate to do something to push back against this senseless hatred, but not sure what to do.

So, thank you for the link. It is working intermittently.

Wow very upsetting to open Twitter and be confronted with the incredibly horrific video that was being talked about earlier. No need to click. just Auto played! I'll never unsee that. I am f'ng glad my kids can't unlock my phone and open apps.

Yes, Givealittle posted a message saying they are seeing traffic 20x that of a normal night so service may be a bit spotty.

I think we don't need your sarcasm at this moment.

BarTender: So the same tolerance should apply to kiddy porn and Islamic extremists showing gory stuff??
I think you've misread the room and belong with your fellow extremists on Whale Oil or Kiwiblog rather than Geekzone.

Er, no. That would be dumb. I actually agree with the Karl Popper cartoon you posted.

Really since you are arguing against censorship. Yet agree with me.

White supremacists and terrorist sites should have no place in our society.

I fully support all ISPs blocking any terrorists supporting sites. Both Chan's fall into that category.

I don't understand why you feel the need to defend the free speech of terrorists.

Less of that assumption, let's see why both NZ and Australia had nothing. They aren't useless. The manifesto came out minutes earlier than the attack I heard, or maybe the threat, unsure. But I'd rather see what the two countries come up with first.

That is awful. I hope you are ok, it's not something anyone should see.

I have a Twitter account but never use it anymore. Thankfully I haven't  seen it and have no desire what so ever to see it.

The Police and NZ Defence Force were amazing. Two seperate attacks, and hours later they seem to have taken the 3 offenders into custody. ChCh is not that small. They deserve all the thanks we can give. And the ability to seek them out.
