SpaceX's stock rally has come to a halt for now. On Monday, the share fell 16.43 percent to around $154 — its lowest level since the first trading day. In after-hours trading, the stock recovered only about two percent.

By the grace of God, shorting IPOs is often restricted or impossible for retail traders. Like on old maps warning "Here be dragons."

For those who may only be a little aware of the term "shorting a stock".

Companies with strong fanbases like SpaceX (and Nvidia) are notoriously dangerous to short.
SpaceX is way over hyped, extremely volatile IPO. Like a space rocket, if it explodes unexpectedly, you don't want to be near it.

When you short a stock, you
1) Borrow shares
2) Sell them immediately
3) Promise to buy them back later and return them

If the price falls, you profit. If the price rises, you lose money.

But here’s the catch. A stock can rise forever. There is no maximum price a stock can reach. Your losses grow as long as the price keeps rising. Your maximum gain is capped at 100% if the stock goes to zero)

So limited upside, unlimited downside.

Many a stock speculator has dabbled in "shorting stocks" and went bankrupt. See Volkswagen 2008 short squeeze, GameStop 2021.
