Batman:

msukiwi:

Has managed to "ban" TikTok yet?

Everything I've seen, says he will do it as early as Saturday. (US Time)

As early as = Sometime before the end of the planet Earth or the Universe, whichever comes first!

he won't.

if he does the election campaign only needs one line. Joe will bring back tik tok = win.

Chuck Schumer, the Dems Senate minority leader was one of the people exposing the links between TikTok and the CCP.

He also supports TikTok being shutdown or regulated in the US

Its almost like it must be a conspiracy theory, or the Dems and Republicans are actually the same party

If you were a troll, this is the kind  of thing you would be saying. Either side is equally bad, spread  a sense of hopelessness so people don't bother voting, undermine belief in the system, create chaos and confusion.

Today's Democrats are much less worse than today's Republicans. Biden is much much less worse than Trump. They are not the same. Voting does matter and it can make a difference.

How can it be a troll, when it is literally coming out of the Dems Sentate minority leaders mouth
There is nothing wrong with demanding better than the pathetic hypocritical corporatist leaders we have now.
Criticism of one side being interpreted as support for the other is a stupid illogical game we are forced to play
Reading this thread, you'd believe that banning TikTok is all a Trump conspiracy because some teenagers grabbed all the tickets to his rally

And, really, what good will TikTok banning do when pretty much all the Internet infrastructure is Made in China, all IOT devices (smart speakers, cameras, alarms, doorbells, lights) are all made in China?

If they wanted they already have access to anything and everything.

The Tik-Tok thing has been raised many times by computer security experts. It seems it wasn't until his rally that he took notice of it. There probably is a case to investigate it and take action on it given the concerns raised about its corporate structure, the permissions it seems to require on your phone etc. I also note it is now Monday morning NZ time and it still isn't banned. I suspect he is just tweeting in to the void about it but won't actually do anything official.

Tik Tok concerns is probably legit. But the way the Potus does things never looks normal. But hey he's there by way of democracy.

What's he going to do next? Ban the next platform they use? Facebook? Love to see him try that one.

There's a paradox here. If you could guarantee no government interference in TikTok (or any platform) then there would be no case for banning it on the grounds of it being government spyware. On the other hand, lack of official government interference (i.e. regulation) is exactly why Facebook (and every other platform) is such a cesspit of conspiracy theory nonsense and covert population manipulation ala Cambridge Analytica.

There's nothing to expose, China is a state-controlled economy, every enterprise of any size that operates there has state influence. It's like exposing the fact that water is wet, or that the sun rises in the morning. So it was pure political point-scoring, nothing else.

And all of that Internet infrastructure is comprehensively penetrated by the NSA (and therefore GCHQ, the DSD, the CSE, and the GCSB). And from the other side, Russia. You just accept that as part of using it all.

Incidentally, in terms of actual evidence found for surveillance by countries:

NSA: Everything everywhere they can get ("complete collection").

Russia: Massive political trolling and manipulation, some economic espionage of the US and Europe.

China: Some economic espionage, mainly of the US.

So China is the least threat of all of those. However, for the US it's also the biggest bogeyman. Pay no attention to that NSA behind the curtain!

The New York Times - D.A. Is Investigating Trump and His Company Over Fraud, Filing Suggests

Aug. 3, 2020

The Manhattan district attorney’s office suggested on Monday that it had been investigating President Trump and his company for possible bank and insurance fraud, a significantly broader inquiry than the prosecutors have acknowledged in the past.

The suggestion by the office of the district attorney, Cyrus R. Vance Jr., came in a new federal court filing arguing that Mr. Trump’s accountants should have to comply with a grand jury subpoena seeking eight years of his personal and corporate tax returns. ...

Until now, the district attorney’s inquiry had appeared largely focused on hush-money payments made in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election to two women who said they had affairs with Mr. Trump. ...

If Mr. Vance succeeds in eventually obtaining Mr. Trump’s records, they are unlikely to become public anytime soon because they will be shielded by grand jury secrecy rules.

The records might only emerge later if criminal charges are brought and the records are introduced in a trial.
