freitasm:

One good question I've seen repeated everywhere: with so much surveillance and with perpetrator posting so much "content" publicly in the last few days, how come security services didn't know this?

Also, with people proposing increased censorship.

If they are openly promoting themselves on Social Media, isn't that actually helpful to stop them?

Because they weren't looking at what the real terrorist threat was.  The record has been stuck on track 9/11.

We knew (some of us here anyway) with reference to warnings about the alt right movement in NZ - which met with a lot of general apathy/tolerance from others.

I'd argue that the reference in the article you posted above - re the history of the white nationalism in Chch (and in some previous posts in this thread) and connecting the movements to what just happened miss a point:

The likes of Kyle Chapman - a moronic parody of a right wing leader with no leadership skills, no debating skills, with a band of even more moronic, unfit, unhealthy pot-gutted "knighted troops" and a few half-witted skinheads in their Doc Martens.  Haven't seen sight of any of them for years.

Now it's a more well organised global movement, with "inspirational" leaders who won't normally directly advocate violence, but dog-whistle it through fostering hatred and intolerance to a larger audience.

Its times like this that bring out the best in people. But it also brings out the worst in some people. Every now and then I feel that the extremist element, or the supporters thereof, turn up here. They don't last long. Maybe its just me, but it just feels that way.

There is (was) a white supremacist movement that used to spread their "message" by posting posters on poles around the city (Wellington). They used to meet in cafes around the city to celebrate people's birthdays and take photos - all posted with their faces covered. They used whistle words to refer to nazi ideology, how they wanted to recover New Zealand to the white European who lost everything.

Their URL was blocked on Geekzone and moderators were instructed to ban without explanation anyone who linked to them.

Today they posted a "We do not agree with violence" and closed shop, according to their website.

I just wonder if they truly closed or just using a smokescreen.

White-nationalism, extremist ideology, racism is rife. People who do not see it are ignoring reality.

Just YouTube being YouTube. They can identify copyright infringement while you are still uploading a video but can't take down first person view mass murdering videos even after being notified.

Typical.

networkn: Wow very upsetting to open Twitter and be confronted with the incredibly horrific video that was being talked about earlier. No need to click. just Auto played! I'll never unsee that. I am f'ng glad my kids can't unlock my phone and open apps.

I have a Twitter account but never use it anymore. Thankfully I haven't  seen it and have no desire what so ever to see it.

I did not even go looking for it. I had less than zero interest in ever seeing it. It was in my feed. I don't even want to go back and see who posted or retweeted it.

That is awful. I hope you are ok, it's not something anyone should see.

Thanks for your concern. I'm ok. As ok as anyone could be today and under these circumstances.

I wonder if the government is going to revamp the way they look at national security. It is obvious that it is nowhere near up to scratch.

Good idea. We could rush through some legislation real quick. No need for pesky consultation- it's a crisis!

Well we don't need to enact anything AFAICT.

That was done in 2002 with the Terrorism Suppression Act 2002 (and subsequent amendments), so it's at the PM's discretion.

It's simplified somewhat too - as had there been only a threat from the alt-right, then they'd have had to have been formally declared to be a designated terrorist organisation. Now that the PM has given her word that this was a terrorist act which it most certainly was, I guess that's it.  The GSCB and other spooks have been given the go ahead to rat "them" out.  I hope they're very thorough.

That's a predictable move.  If any of them were associated with / helping any of the offenders, the penalty is up to 14 years or life.

At a high level, it's not just Trump, other alt-right leaders have taken power. Bannon. They seem to be everywhere. Probably small in number but high in what they can achieve. Its like a silent killer. The Linwood Ave Mosque has been getting mail in their letterbox, "you're not wanted in Linwood, go away". Saw that tonight. Its like guerrillas in warfare. They are out there, you just cannot see them.
