Luxon and co not very popular at the protest today: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/fast-track-approvals-bill-protesters-to-gather-in-aucklands-aotea-square/TKKB6NJTU5BX5NMLG3HWLSR26Q/

Did they campaign on law bypassing? But Shane is one of the MP's in control so thats ok... /S

Protests against this coalition seem entrenched

I don't think he's got the courage. Between the arrogance and entitlement of being ordained by God/John Key (delete as appropriate) to be Prime Minister from birth and the humiliation of knowing he's essentially powerless to keep Peters & Seymour on a leash, he can't back down and say he was wrong. It is abundantly clear what the balance of actual public sentiment is.

Seymour

I think 15% might be a bit of a stretch at the next election.

Then it's probably a good thing a Town Hall Reset is just a media stunt and doesn't actually mean anything.

Sent a new email to the PM and Tim Costley this morning, my shortest ever.

Prime Minister, Mr. Costley,

I assume the media has simply overlooked the new accommodation supplements provided in the 2024 budget to all the other residents of the foreign city of Waikanae who are forced to work in Wellington?

We live out in Paraparaumu - a stones throw from Waikanae and seriously Tim Costly doing this has pissed us, and the community off. Public transport going up and Tim feels the need to claim this like the entitled prick he is.

And I use the word prick lightly here. He's not well liked around here. One morning he was at the train station trying to talk to people as they were trying to get on with their lives and go into work via train. He attempted to stop my wife boarding the train to say hello to her. I get it, they voted him in (We're actually outside that electorate because of how weird the electorate maps are) but he's now just grinding everyones gears.

Luxon defending him by saying "he has a 1hr 30min journey home" shows how out of touch they are. No, it's not 1hr 30mins, it's 40mins thanks to Transmission Gully and we all travel into Wellington, some on a daily basis with no fuss.

Really goes to show they don't give a shit about the general public - only about themselves.

The whole allowances scheme needs to be heavily revised. Big fan of the 'pay them a nominal amount extra depending on where they're coming from' and letting them work out how to cover the costs themselves. They might get a bit more insight into the costs that other civilians are paying for things if they don't have the luxury of someone else covering the lion's share.

Luxon and the National team will reduce the frequency of post-cabinet press conferences apparently.

https://newsroom.co.nz/2024/06/10/luxon-reduces-frequency-of-post-cabinet-press-conference/

It's been my impression they have been feeling some difficulties there.

Isn't that what Trump did when he got cornered?

I seem to remember one of his last Press Secretaries (they were all called Miss D Blonde) didn't hold a single press conference in over a year.

If you have a 12.30am finish (which it can easily be with bill readings etc) and then a 7.30am start, it doesn't seem unreasonable to have somewhere to sleep and shower in Wellington rather than adding an hour commute onto both ends of that. But if it's your own mortgage free place then it doesn't feel right to be claiming an allowance - the rules probably need reviewing.

There are a lot of people on minimum wage who do that sort of thing.

However there simply needs to be a set of "flats" available for all MPs next to parliament , if you choose to go elsewhere its at your own expense.

Probably thousands of people who have those hours, nearly all getting paid a hell of a lot less than an MP. And they don't get free accommodation to make up for it.

A Japanese style sleeper cubicle would fill this need. More than that should not be on the taxpayer.
