More than 1,500 lawyers* condemned efforts by the Trump campaign’s legal team to reverse the election results in an open letter that urged the American Bar Association (ABA) to investigate the conduct of the team, including its leader, Rudolph W. Giuliani.

 

“President Trump’s barrage of litigation is a pretext for a campaign to undermine public confidence in the outcome of the 2020 election, which inevitably will subvert constitutional democracy,” the letter says. 

 

“Sadly, the President’s primary agents and enablers in this effort are lawyers, obligated by their oath and ethical rules to uphold the rule of law.” ...

 

“In their frivolous lawsuits geared toward stealing the election, Trump’s lawyers are bringing ill-repute to the entire legal community and abusing the legal system to assault democracy.”

 

“Every lawyer promulgating or promoting Trump’s suits should face the strongest possible punishment and be stripped of their license to practice law. If targeting American democracy does not merit such sanction, nothing does.” ...

 

 

 

 

*  The signers include a bipartisan coalition of former ABA presidents, state bar presidents, retired federal judges, retired state Supreme Court justices and attorneys in private practice.

 

The open letter questions the conduct by Giuliani, as well as current and former Trump legal team members Joseph diGenova, Jenna Ellis, Victoria Toensing and Sidney Powell.

So...Trump has not got a hope in hell of changing anything now? He can file all the lawsuits under the sun but the outcome of the election will not be changing? Is that right?

As the Russian proverb goes: "What doesn't kill you make you stronger," Trump may provide impetus for the US to get their democratic election sh_t together.

At the very least, state election commissions will streamline their vote counting. Perhaps, dare I dream, a single standard for all US states around voting may one day occur?

A Republican congressman who has filed an amicus brief in the Texas lawsuit seeking to overturn the results of the presidential election said Wednesday that Trump is “anxiously awaiting” the list of lawmakers who support the effort.

 

Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) said in a letter to fellow House Republicans that Trump called him Wednesday morning “to express his great appreciation for our effort to file an amicus brief in the Texas case on behalf of concerned Members of Congress.”

 

“He specifically asked me to contact all Republican Members of the House and Senate today and request that all join on to our brief,” Johnson said in the letter. “He said he will be anxiously awaiting the final list to review.”

 

In the letter, Johnson said he and others are “not seeking to independently litigate the particular allegations of fraud,” but rather are urging the Supreme Court to conduct a “careful, timely review” of the allegations.

 

The letter comes as Trump has continued to spread misinformation and make false claims about the election. 

 

Trump said Wednesday that his campaign will be joining the lawsuit, tweeting, “We will be INTERVENING in the Texas (plus many other states) case. This is the big one. Our Country needs a victory!” ...

Now, he might not have to: The home’s latest owner is launching a crowdfunding campaign with the goal of giving the five-bedroom Tudor in Jamaica Estates to the president as a gift - once the $3 million price tag is met.

 

The unusual real estate maneuver seeks to capitalize on the devotion of some of Mr. Trump’s supporters, in the hopes that the same commitment that has driven them to attend his large rallies in the middle of a pandemic will also induce them to open their wallets. ...

 


The seller has agreed to donate half of anything raised over the $3 million asking price to charity. 

 

And if the goal is not met, information on the GoFundMe page says all money raised will be donated to charity. 

 

But the seller has not revealed which nonprofit might benefit, or how long the fund-raiser would stay active.

As doors keep closing on Trump, he keeps reaching for increasingly desperate ploys. Is there any possibility at all this could ultimately conclude on 19 January with a state of emergency and declaration of the theocratic state of Gilead? That is not something I would have seriously considered, but he just won't quit and he has a lot of fanatical followers. When all other options are ended, is he capable of saying what the hell and bringing out the military? Can this be completely ruled out? I don't trust his judgement or his sanity and I wouldn't put anything past him.

Yeah, and Covid is harmless and, just like a miracle, will go away. Trump has shown how far you can push the US system towards a dictatorship. The impetus he's provided is showing what you can do, all it requires is someone less incompetent than him to see it through. The big issue for the US will be getting the military on side, fomenting unrest and deploying NY troops to Texas and Texas troops to NY to deal with it is an obvious one, but you need to first cause dissent in the military in order to politicise it and that's not going to be so easy.

According to this article, there actually is a method to this madness, and it is chilling. Make enough failed absurd comical claims and lawsuits, and you build momentum that ultimately improves the chances of yourself or someone like you coming back and winning in the end. That is also statistics.

Yes, because the US military has a long tradition of being apolitical. See my previous post, the biggest problem for Trump Mk.II will be to figure out how to politicise the military.

Check out this editorial from the WP. What seems to be happening with the increasingly absurd legal challenges, is a move towards a final showdown of some kind, where people are whipped up and then urged to take (violent) action, after which Trump can declare an emergency, martial law, and all the other dictator crap that goes with these kinds of things, and bring things to a point of anarchy where he has a legal basis for ordering the military onto the streets, at which point the military has to either obey the 'legal' order or defy the oath they have all sworn. I don't think that bastard is going to relent. He is going for an all-out takeover.
