The Deadliest Days In American History:

Here are some of the deadliest days in American history:

1. Galveston Hurricane – 8,000

2. Battle of Antietam – 3,675

3. Battle of Gettysburg – 3,155

4. September 11 – 2,977

5. Last Thursday – 2,879

6. Last Wednesday – 2,804

7. Last Friday – 2,607

8. Last Tuesday – 2,597

9. Pearl Harbor – 2,403

Those figures are now overtaken, numbers 4 and 5 are now "This Thursday" and "This Wednesday". So a hurricane in 1900, two Civil War battles, an then "everyday life under Trump".

The Washington Post - Opinion - So much for ‘Biden the socialist’

today

We should keep track of the Republican lies if only because they are destined to be repeated in future elections.

In this case, I am not talking about The Lie (that President-elect Joe Biden stole the election), but about the other lazy attack Republicans deploy against virtually any Democrat: They are socialists!

We heard that gibe continually during the 2020 campaign. ... Poppycock.

Given Biden’s record on everything from the Iraq War to the 1994 crime bill to his campaign rhetoric opposing Medicare-for-all, Republican fear-mongering about a radical Democratic administration never made sense. ...

Since the election, it has become even more apparent how moderate Biden really is.

There is not a single super-progressive among his Cabinet and senior staff picks.

To the contrary, his national security team is imbued with a bipartisan vision of international leadership, not a left- or right-wing call for retrenchment. ...

Biden has avoided innovators who might renovate departments in favor of institutionalists who want to restore departments and agencies to their original mission ...

and in the same issue ...

The Washington Post - Politics - Biden’s Obama-era Cabinet picks frustrate liberals, civil rights leaders

Actually Biden is a socialist, at least as used by the US far right. In that case its not any political orientation but is used in the same way someone would have used 'communist' in the 1950s and 1960s, 'someone I don't like but if pressed can't really define why'.

I'm terms of true socialist countries, the top rated countries in the world in the (badly named) World Happiness Index, the best countries in the world to live in, have always been socialist (specifically following the Nordic Socialism model). S**thole countries, as Trump would put it, like the US are some way down the scale.

Gotta love that America. Millions living under bridges, vastly overpriced health care only the privileged can afford, oil in the drinking water, crumbling infrastructure, corrupt politicians, but hey, at least it is not socialist!

The New York Times - Russian Hackers Broke Into Federal Agencies, U.S. Officials Suspect

breaking

The Trump administration acknowledged on Sunday that hackers acting on behalf of a foreign government - almost certainly a Russian intelligence agency, according to federal and private experts - broke into a range of key government networks, including in the Treasury and Commerce Departments, and had free access to their email systems.

Officials said a hunt was on to determine if other parts of the government had been victimized by what looked to be one of the most sophisticated, and perhaps among the largest, attacks on federal systems in the past five years.

Several said a series of national security-related agencies were also affected, though it was not clear whether the systems contained highly classified material.  ...

The revelation came less than a week after the National Security Agency, which is responsible for both breaking into foreign computer networks and defending the federal government’s most sensitive national security systems, issued a warning that “Russian state-sponsored actors” were exploiting flaws in a system that is broadly used in the federal government. ...

EDIT

The matter was so serious it prompted an emergency National Security Council meeting on Saturday, Reuters reported.

Coincidentally, John le Carré, the celebrated author of spy novels, died yesterday.

Trump's boss is worried that the president will no longer brief him on classified US information, so he's making sure he gets access via other methods.

Unless there's a violent overthrow in the cards, it's over

Previously he wished something was over, when it wasn't. The universe doesn't bend to his will despite what he believes.

And another one bites the dust (again) ...

The New York Times - A federal judge in Wisconsin deals Trump another defeat in court.

13 Dec 2020

A federal judge in Milwaukee on Saturday tossed out President Trump’s latest effort to overturn the election results in Wisconsin, dismissing the case and ruling that it had failed “as a matter of law and fact.

In a strongly worded decision, Judge Brett H. Ludwig, a Trump appointee who took his post only three months ago, shot down one of the president’s last remaining attempts to alter the results of a statewide race. ...
