In NZ the closest I can recall to trinkets being sold in honour of dear leaders was the Muldoon piggy-bank and IIRC a coffee mug, neither particularly flattering or used to fundraise for his party, but he took it all in good humour.
I think the US "republic" misses not having a royal family. The Kennedy family almost got there, two Bushes, almost two Clintons, devoted cultees of Trump seemed to think the God Emperor was up to it.
Biden's coin has 1789 - 2021 on it. Didn't realise he was that old.

Edit: also, another private message from Nathan. Anyone else get one?
I have had a few. I think he is using these as a way to participate in the thread. I have asked him not to but he continues. After the last one, I told him I would make a formal complaint against him if I got another. So far, no more. His messages are not outrageous or excessive but this is not correct use of private mail and a mod might want to look into it.

@freitasm What about renaming this thread to "The Ex-President of the USA: Donald Trump?" on Jan, 6th or Jan, 20th latest? :-)

I have had two. Nothing outrageous. Did not respond.
I've had two as well, didn't respond either.

Interesting that they differentiate between the 59th inaugural and the 46th president. Why would anyone care? And what's the "America's First" beneath the VP? Is it because they couldn't fit "non old white guy" in there as well?

I never figured out why Nathan was banned from posting. While his point of view was at odds with many on here I don't think his point of view is uncommon for a lot of people living in the US.
To give an example I have several friends in the US who thought Hillary should have been charged with treason over using a private unsecured server for important Federal emails. I rather suspect there are very few on here who would have held that opinion.
While I may not agree with everything someone like Nathan might say I have to recognise they see things through a different lens than someone like myself here in New Zealand.
I don't think a lot of people realise that the Democrats are to the right of our main stream centre right party and the Republican are to the right of the Democrats. Both the Democrats and the Republicans see us a being very Socialist no matter which government we have.
We are busy using our New Zealand Left or Right wing philosophies to judge a country which has philosophies which might appear to be the same or similar to our own but are in fact quite different. There are so many differences between our two cultures it is difficult for either group to fully understand each other.
For a start, just talk to most US citizens about carrying guns, or free health care. What can work in one country doesn't necessarily work elsewhere.

Well the US has been lobbied hard about access to guns and the evils of free health care forever. Affordable health care = "death panels" and any politician wanting to restrict access to guns is a commie who will use the military against the now unarmed populace no longer able to defend themselves against tyranny. The GOP does nothing to oppose this lunacy - Trump has made it worse.
What they decide on doesn't work - both are disastrous for a large % of the population.
"'It's turned crazy': Inside the scramble for Trump pardons"
President Donald Trump may not be willing to accept his term is ending, but as the clock ticks down on his time in office, hundreds of his allies -- including some of his closest business associates and many high-profile criminals -- are ramping up their efforts to squeeze out the final ounces of his presidential power.
Since Trump lost the election six weeks ago, calls and emails have been flooding into the West Wing from people looking to benefit from the President's powers of clemency. So inundated is Trump's staff with requests for pardons or commutations that a spreadsheet has been created to keep track of the requests directed to Trump's close aides.
Trump, who refuses to acknowledge his loss and who officials say is devolving further into denial, has nonetheless been eager to engage on who is requesting what. He's been handed case summaries to review and, in some instances, has polled his network of associates about whom he should pardon.
With the end of his presidency nearing, Trump appears eager to wield his powers before he finds them gone. Unlike practically any other matter related to the end of his presidency, his clemency powers are a topic Trump actually seems to enjoy discussing, one person in communication with the President said, even though it amounts to another tacit reminder that his tenure at the White House is nearly over.
