kingdragonfly: The ad wars in Georgia’s two Senate races, which have soared past the $450 million mark

Just to put that into perspective, that would be a $500 payout for each of the 800,000+ people out of work due to Covid who can't get compensation.

Opinion from NYTimes on fake news impact in immigrant communities:

NYTimes Opinion: Right-wing conspiracy theories have infiltrated Asian and Latino communities through social media platforms like WeChat, WhatsApp, Facebook, KakaoTalk and YouTube. Organizers say that older immigrants who don't consume mainstream English-language media can be more susceptible to disinformation about American politics. "Disinformation is really hard to track because it isn't just contained in the continental U.S, but being lobbied from friends and family from, let's say, Columbia," Maria Teresa Kumar, chief executive of Voto Latino, said. Democrats don't understand how deep it is."

Opinion from NYTimes on fake news impact in immigrant communities:

This bit is depressingly familiar:

But since the election, the fake news she hears has only worsened, spiking from Fox News talking points to batty QAnon-level conspiracy theories. When I ask where she gets her news, my mother simply says, everyone thinks this.

“Who is everyone?”

“Everyone!” she insists, rattling off all her friends who have told her falsehoods that George Soros or Bill Gates will control Mr. Biden. As if under the spell of a cult, my mother has a fresh new conspiracy theory for me each time we speak. Recently, she asked me if Mr. Biden stole the election — because how else could thousands of votes suddenly have appeared for him in Michigan?

as is the comment elsewhere about having to bat away new conspiracy theories every time they talk.

And it's pretty much impossible to argue against these conspiracy theories. Given the choice between simple falsehoods that confirm their prejudices and complex truths, way too many people will take the simple falsehoods.

My (American, Republican-voting) sister-in-law just after the results for Georgia were called, told me that "Biden thinks he's won the election". I had to gently remind her that Trump actually lost, she then said she was over hearing about, 5 of her colleagues have coronavirus and she was sick of it and couldn't wait for it all [the election] to be over.

USA Today: AAttorney General Barr: No reason to name special counsels to investigate Hunter Biden or election fraud

Departing Attorney General William Barr continued to distance himself from President Donald Trump, saying Monday that he saw no reason to appoint special counsels to investigate Hunter Biden or unsubstantiated allegations of election fraud.

Barr, who is set to leave office Wednesday, also broke with Trump by publicly blaming Russia for a massive cyber attack that has affected more than a half-dozen government agencies and an untold number of private companies, even as the president pointed the finger at China over the weekend and sought to downplay the breach.

...Trump has accused the media of inflating the seriousness of the cyberattacks and deflected blame from Russia, undermining his own administration’s warning last week that the cyberattacks believed to be tied to Russia continues to pose a “grave risk” to government networks and the private sector.

...Barr, long regarded as Trump's most consequential advocate, announced his resignation last week after clashes with the president over his unfounded election fraud claims.

Trump also was angered after learning that Barr had not publicly disclosed the investigation involving Hunter Biden during the campaign. The case had been opened in 2018, though Barr had been briefed on it after taking office in February 2019.

Essay by anthropologist Wade Davis - The Unraveling of America

Long but worthwhile read.  Some facts a bit dated (published 6 Aug).  Towards the end drifts a little with comments on Canada and Scandinavia whose recent covid stats no longer look as rosy as they did back in July.  DT gets the treatment towards the middle of the article.

Crime Boss tip of the day.  If you scratch someone's back expecting them to reciprocate, first make sure they're just as dirty and corrupt as you are:

Lock Trump up.  He's a crook.

Weird executive order from Trump, on 11 December. It's a one-off for 2020, not a new permanent holiday.

It's not for the general public. US companies don't have to give any holidays; they are only non-legally "encouraged".

Four states have one day required holidays, such as "Nevada’s Nevada Day" and "Georgia’s Founding Day"

Independent UK: Trump signs executive order making Christmas Eve a federal holiday in 2020

Christmas Eve will be considered a federal holiday in the United States this year, according to a new executive order signed by President Trump.

Under the executive order, signed Friday, “all executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government shall be closed and their employees excused from duty on Thursday, 24 December 2020, the day before Christmas Day”.

...Officially, there are only 10 US federal holidays, but presidents can sign executive orders granting federal employees days off.

...For employees in the private sector, federal holidays may or may not mean a day off – as businesses cannot legally be required to observe a holiday.

If you needed more evidence of the Nazi ideology by the Orange Turd and his team "Trump issues order to demand new US federal buildings be 'beautiful'"

Donald Trump decreed on Monday that all new US federal buildings should be “beautiful”, in a long-expected executive order which excoriated architectural modernism but stopped short of demanding that all such projects should be in the classical style.

When a draft of the order first surfaced, in February, critics reacted with horror to its promise to “make federal buildings beautiful again” by mandating a return to “the classical architectural style”.

Both the American Institute of Architects and the National Trust for Historic Preservation objected, while Goldberger told the Guardian the problem was “not with classical architecture per se”, but that “the mandating of an official style is not fully compatible with 21st-century liberal democracy”.

RUSSIAN HACKERS DISAPPOINTED TO FIND U.S. GOVERNMENT ALREADY DISABLED

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Russian hackers attempting to disrupt the U.S. government were disappointed to discover that it had already been thoroughly disabled, the hackers have confirmed.

Expecting to find a well-oiled machine that they could impair, the hackers instead came upon a barely operational mess that had already suffered what appeared to be four years of degradation.

Dmitri X (not his real name), was assigned to hack the Environmental Protection Agency’s computer systems and was “shocked” by the agency’s weakened condition.

“My job was to access the E.P.A.’s database and delete all of the environmental regulations,” he said. “There was nothing there left to delete.”

The hacker found similar evidence of sabotage at the Department of Justice, the Department of Education, and many other federal agencies.

“I have to say it was very disheartening,” he said. “I was hired to cripple the U.S. government, but it’s clear that someone else got there first.”

Dmitri X could not identify who was behind the widespread vandalism, but speculated that the culprit must have had vast experience in driving large organizations into bankruptcy.

Just a ruse to clear the buildings. When the federal employees return to work they'll find their desks manned by Proud Boys.

I found this Youtube channel today "The Choice"

There's a bunch of videos about the 2020 election just posted this week.

From a PR release on 5 October.

"NBCUniversal’s Peacock is dabbling in original news and commentary content with the launch of The Choice, a special channel built around the 2020 Election.

Leading The Choice are the self-titled 'The Mehdi Hasan Show' and 'Zerlina.'

The Choice joins a special edition of 'Meet the Press' created for Peacock branded as 'Meet the Press Reports.. In the program, Chuck Todd delves into a specific issue for the thirty-minute show with historical context and background."

"The Choice": Political Hypocrisy? Republicans Who Downplayed COVID Among First Vaccinated

Zerlina. | The Choice

Vice President Mike Pence, Sen. Mitch McConnell and Sen. Marco Rubio have all downplayed the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed 300,000 Americans and infected 18 million. Despite that, they were among the first Republican lawmakers to receive the vaccine — even before emergency room doctors. Brigham and Women’s Hospital Emergency Room physician Dr. Jeremy Faust joins Zerlina Maxwell to discuss.

A case of voter fraud finally confirmed:

A Delaware County man is facing charges of unlawful voting and perjury after prosecutors say he illegally voted on behalf of a long-dead family member in the General Election.

Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said during a news conference Monday that Bruce Bartman, 70, of Marple, voted in place of his dead mother. He also said Bartman registered his mother-in-law, who died in 2019, to vote but did not obtain an absentee ballot for her.

Authorities allege he used his mother-in-law's social security number and the system returned a deceased record for the woman who had died in 2019. The state sent a confirmation letter to make sure the information was correct, which authorities allege Bartman falsified and returned to register her as a voter. He did not obtain a ballot in her name, prosecutors said.

Stollsteimer said Bartman had registered both women as Republicans and told investigators he had done so to help re-elect Donald Trump. The District Attorney said he only mentioned the party affiliation because of multiple conspiracy theories circulating about voter fraud, adding that this is the only case during this election that his office has encountered.

Not surprised.  Trump is on record urging supporters to vote twice.

Oh that's okay. It's when the Democrats (supposedly) commit voter fraud, that's a major problem. Republicans? They're all good.
