So if the rail's going to cost $10b, and the shift of port is going to cost another $10b, then that's a cost per Auckland household of about $40,000 each - doubling everyone's rates for say the next 25 years or so should cover it.  Maybe they should hold a referendum.

The rail is $10bn for basically a whole new transport network serving currently isolated areas with rapidly growing populations and congestion issues.

The $10bn port move is a blank cheque to a political relic that needs to be consigned to the history books.

I'd rather my ability to get to and from work and the time I get to spend with my family not be put on the same footing as securing NZ First's electoral future at the expense of the taxpayer.

Yes its a NZF move, but last I saw AC was for it? Open up the harbour for entertainment revenue

The port was running out of space and getting large trucks in and out was hardly optimal.

The problem of the trucks can be greatly lessened if we stopped moving goods up and down the country on the roads and used trains. Trains are far more efficient and way better for the environment.

AC is up for it because some people have wet dreams about building a stadium on the 'open harbour'. They get a bit murky on the details of "How do you replace $50m a year in dividends and justify supporting closing a port that is committing to a capital works program and automation?"

Plus the Council view is dominated by inner-city yuppies like Simon Wilson who put their view front and centre, and tend to ignore the other Aucklanders who would be significantly worse off by either 1) having massive truck congestion added to an already congested road network out West and 2) the inherent supply chain vulnerabilities of not having a port in the same region.

Their fault for not living in Pt Chev, I guess!

Maybe you need a new thread for ACC?

I simply dont understand why JA is keeping him around when he is clearly such a liability. Most past leaders would have rolled him from the front benches just for the Kiwibuild BS. Maybe JA has nobody to put in his spot.

A Racoon would do a better job than him and get far more votes to boot.

People are going to think she is doing a better job by dropping him than keeping him around.

Agree. While Kiwibuild was not his fault, he is not the "Fixer" that he was purported to be, and he is a liability. Cleaning the swamp isn't just required in the US

Hmmm.

He was promising things he did not understand, he simply had no idea about time frames. Getting large projects started can take years before capacity of labour and materials becomes freely available to meet the demand.

I met him in Palmerston North about rental housing. He was in complete denial, and still is. The changes they have made make house rentals a poor investment unless you are going the airbnb route. I know of a couple of people who have sold up and exited the market. I see many older rental houses being snapped up by developers who flatten the old houses and put 2-3 town houses on the section all at prices first home buyers can not afford. I am close to selling up as well and buying an apartment in Surfers Paradise instead, better return and a good holiday place for the whole extended family.

A couple of large blocks are being turned into 40-50 1-2 bedroom social housing multi storey units. I expect these to be slums within a few years, they are not going to he high quality apartments that you would find in Surfers Paradise, they are just a modern interpretation of the old multi-storey housing corp houses.

As for his "memory", I think he may have to get the nick name Philgetful .

Misleading Parliament is a serious offence and he seems to be a continual offender. But nothing surprises me with these current high caliber Ministers.

I have found MPs from all sides of the house to be as bad as the other.

I vote on policies, not on party, nor on personality, and I have voted differently the last 4 or more times.

I owe no allegiance to any party.

Same here but they all have policies. Simon's Our Bottom Line brochure fixes everything. So will Labours. Its about delivery and Labour isn't and National won't.

National has gone back to poor people bashing thinking it will win them votes. A complete turn off for me.

In the last decade its been slow. Market driven, no housing crisis. Labour has gone out there will real policies and failed. They have pottered with some stuff and made progress, but its been A for desire but D for results. Maybe they can resurrect a C for results. National or anyone for that matter has to for once, have real policies. They have from Simons handout. But lets see the detail. Labour was rightfully bashed for big on ideas low on detail, lets see what Nats do. They have already nailed big on ideas. Im not really sure where the "we want clean dry houses" comes from, or "affordable homes"??? But the election will be on real policies, with nailed outcomes, and detail. Needs to be big on detail. After 9 years of nothing and what is likely to be 3 years of not much, the masses want outcomes, not ideas.

I love it when politicians state they will create a growing economy (as an example). GREAT, can you tell us how in detail?? Sure, "we will create a growing economy that Kiwi's will prosper in as that's what they deserve!" LOL. Thats politics for you. Now, I feel we will want documented policies not ideas and hope.

I dont care who governs, but it needs to be delivered, we are decades from that, historically.

Im all for encouraging immunisation especially when parents are on a benefit, just like I am appalled that those making millions from selling/manufacturing drugs could be collecting a benefit. Just as appalling is the level of the benefit for those that are entitled especially when it has fallen so far behind and is now below poverty line.

I didnt see what Bridges said as poor people bashing at all.
