Pretty rubbish "attempt". I'm sure if that drone hit you right on the head and exploded it would hurt a whole lot, but there was no chance it was going to bring the Kermlin down on top of Putin.

Could Russia be propping up an excuse to make more nuclear threats?

When it comes to symbolic, made-for-TV moments, the alleged drone strike on the Kremlin early Wednesday morning ticks almost all of the boxes.

Foreign policy and defence experts say the dramatic, full-colour, unverified CCTV camera footage of some kind of object exploding in the predawn darkness just below a fluttering Russian flag is a propagandist's dream — at least for ultra-nationalists in Moscow worried about maintaining the morale of a war-weary public ahead of a planned Ukrainian counteroffensive.

The fact that Russian media quickly claimed it was an attempt by Ukraine to assassinate Russian President Vladimir Putin (who was not at home in the Kremlin at the time) and the fact that the explosion caused no casualties and little damage have only deepened the experts' suspicion that the flag pole blast was (ironically) a false flag operation by Moscow's security services.

That bluster by Russians about an assassination attempt.
I'm sure that Putin does not sleep naked on the roof of the Kremlin to commune with nature,
even though he is such a magnificent outdoorsman.

'Bunker Grandpa' probably nowhere near there, maybe on parade day May 9th with a comfy blanket over his knees.

Seemed to be more of Hollywood style fuel explosion, and I expect there is not much on the roof to burn apart from the left-over fuel.
The roof is apparently metal tiles so never in danger.
If it had been like the Auckland Casino bitumen roofing then results would have been more interesting.

Its a bit odd on a number of levels.
The air defenses were very publicly upgraded in the area.
If the roof peak and the flag was the symbolic target it would suggest precise navigation.
GPS navigation should be out in that area, its easy enough for EW to distort or block.
Though Moscow drivers would have their incar nav sending them to wrong places, so they did not bother?

Incompetence on multiple levels is always a factor, though the gap in defenses may have been deliberate.
Like all the cameras being out when Boris Nemtsov was shot in Moscow.

Putin wasn't in the Kremlin when it happened, and the BBC got telephoto shots of the dome and flagpole the following day which showed zero signs of damage.

Sheesh, even the Gleiwitz incident was more credible than this, they carefully left bodies behind dressed in Polish army uniforms.

I am putting two and 2 together here - could be a false flag event to justify cancellation of the parade on May 9th, and all the other reasons as well.

Then Russia wont be mocked for all the latest hardware they can't parade because it's littering the fields of Ukraine.

That's quite plausible. Either way they don't really win. They be seen as running scared and unable to protect their population if they cancel or based on videos that purport to show parade rehearsals they'll publicly expose their extremely depleted arsenal.

Correct. He has deliberately surrounded himself with people who agree with him - either because they're all in on drinking the Koolaid or because they are spineless yes-men looking for proximity to money and power. None of them are going to be great for Russia. The ones most likely to take over in the event Putin was assassinated are the ones who think Putin wasn't evil enough.
