Also I can see a bigger emerging issue being that the US Government's buildings have just been swamped by a mob during a global pandemic, with many of their elderly and more senior legislators now at huge danger. How many Covid19 surface transmissions did we just see? Would you really want to be having a by-election in this climate after what we just saw?

Trump aside, this powderkeg may have already gone off - we just might not know it yet.

+1 Accurate observation.

Seems to me a no-brainer that Trump not be permitted to remain in control. Which, I assume, would put Pence in a position to bring in the military to prop up the government until Biden is inaugurated, and perhaps for a while after that.

I wonder what Obama's advice would be.

Congress has resumed. Team Trump was successful in preventing the session for six hours or so. Presumably the National Guard will remain in place for some time during this session.

Don JR begins his incendiary speech around 1:15:00 in. I haven't watched much further.

This kind of speech does not usually end well.

ABC News - Trump rebuffed efforts to call in National Guard, aides intervened for 'sake of the country'

today

Multiple sources tell ABC News President Trump rebuffed efforts for quite some time to call in the National Guard Wednesday afternoon as chaos escalated at the U.S. Capitol, and steps weren't made until a few White House officials intervened for "the sake of the country."

Sources tell ABC News the aides explained to Trump that if action was not taken other protesters could mobilize across the country and the situation would only grow more dire.

The Washington Post - Pence and McConnell defy Trump - after years of subservience

today

For the Republican Party - and for the nation - the fleeting crumbs of courage were four years too late.

On Wednesday, as the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s electoral victory looked increasingly inevitable, Vice President Pence and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) did something that has eluded them for much of President Trump’s tenure - they clearly and decisively bucked the president.

Speaking on the Senate floor Wednesday, McConnell, his voice breaking at moments, warned that “our democracy would enter a death spiral” if the losing side in an election were able to overturn a fair outcome with baseless allegations.

Voters, the courts and the states have all spoken - they’ve all spoken,” McConnell said. “If we overrule them, it would damage our republic forever.”

And Pence, who has turned his studied subservience to Trump into a full-time public persona, made clear in a 2½ -page letter sent to lawmakers Wednesday afternoon that he planned to fulfill his constitutional duties and - over the vehement entreaties of his boss - certify the election of Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala D. Harris. ...

More blood on Trump's hands. His incitement to violence directly caused this pro-Trump protester's death.

I've seen the video. In a very small staircase, no more than 3 meters wide, there was a barricaded French doors, with half glass window panels.

The furniture piled up against back of the door is about shoulder height. It appears hastily done.

At the point the video starts, the glass is already shattered in one of the panels. (She's standing directly in front, but not sure if she did it).

There's about 7 protesters pressed against the door and the law enforcement are telling them to leave, evacuate. The protestors are yelling "break it down"

She's wearing a bullet proof vest, with a back pack, and an American flag draped around her.

She starts to scale the broken window and the barricade, the furniture. She's about half-way through when a single shot rings out.

She crumples to the ground, and there's about a one second pause. Then the protestors are continue yelling "break it down" again.

It appears she was shot in the neck. She may have been dead before she hit the floor.

New York Post: Ashli Babbit, protester killed at Capitol, was Air Force vet from California

The President Trump supporter killed in the Capitol building Wednesday is an Air Force vet from California who tweeted a day earlier how “nothing will stop us” and “the storm is here.”

...The day before she was fatally shot apparently by Capitol Police, Babbit tweeted, “Nothing will stop us…. they can try and try and try but the storm is here and it is descending upon DC in less than 24 hours….dark to light.”

Babbit, who used the Twitter handle CommonAshSense, also retweeted Wednesday morning — a few hours ahead of her and other Trump supporters storming the Capitol — a “MUST BE DONE LIST before Congress meets today.”

It included, “Mike Pence@vp @Mike_Pence must resign & thereafter be charged with TREASON,” and, “Chief Justice John Roberts must RESIGN.”

...Babbit took a fatal bullet to the chest during the mayhem inside the Capitol. Video footage captured the gunshot, as well as the woman crumpling to the floor. She was apparently shot by Capitol Police, law-enforcement sources told The Post.

...Babitt’s mother-in-law told a Fox affliate in DC she was puzzled by the behavior of her son’s wife.

“I really don’t know why she decided to do this,” the mother-in-law said, according to a reporter’s tweet.
