So is Chloe Swarbrick’s “Okay Boomer” comment ageist?

Before answering, replace the word “Boomer” with one that has racial, gender, religious, etc undertones that categorises someone for the purpose of denigration.  Maybe she just playing ‘us and them’ politics. Not what you should expect from a member of an ‘all inclusive’ political party.

Yes. Nice opinion piece here today, which shows this to be the opposite of what you would assume.

"I worry that those who deploy "OK Boomer" are putting themselves down and signalling their own impotence."

Yes, this is from one who helps run our country. Where are you with Climate Change Green Party????  I see a lot of yakking and nothing to show for it

Global heating is just one symptom of many that is climate change.

I believe it is ageist and something that should not be coming from a member of the government. It puts Swarbrick down there with Winston Peters and Shane Jones. Very disappointing.

Two types in the Green Party. People who care about the environment, and activists

Definitely ageist and an attempt at putting down people older  than herself. She is just another activist who only cares about herself.

It is ageist but as pejoratives go, it seems pretty mild to me. Unlike some other words used for purposes of racial, gender, or religious denigration, which cause real hurt and can incite violence. As an officially elderly person (thus giving me a right to speak on the subject), I am not bothered by it at all. I would be very bothered if I was denied a job or other benefit solely because of my age, but getting indignant about being called an old fart seems pretty precious to me.

She is off course younger and wiser, and I guess everyone else who is older is to blame.

I think most old farts know more then she will ever know, as they grew up, in real time, with these issues. So many tale a genuine interest rtaher than grandstanding. But come in later with your microphone and tell everyone as you know better lol

Similar to that boomers, once born, plotted their devious plans to be rich, and to scuttle future generations? Its consistent seeing them classed as selfish and evil. That's also worth a hefty roll
