Is this going to give a decent return on the investment? Personally I'd rather not have tax cuts and see doctors, nurses and teachers get paid a bit better instead.

Instead of making the required baseline savings of 6.5% that all other government departments were forced to find, Mfat only had to cut 1% of its budget, $15 million.
Asked if Peters got special treatment through the Budget negotiations, the Prime Minister told Stuff, “not that I’m aware of, no.”

Luxon stomping around the DMZ border between DPRK and South Korea a few days ago. Totally unnecessary and a waste of New Zealand's diplomatic capital.

What was the purpose of his visit? Haven't really been following the local political news too much the last few days.

Apparently Winston has a great relationship with the North.
An attempt to patch up things after dropping a major South Korean shipbuilding project summarily.
Ok we stiffed you, how about still buying our stuff.
Look our relationship with South Korea is great they let me swan around.
Certainly we do need greater export and tourism diversity and not be too dependent on China.
Its a lot more comfortable than touring Hospitals in New Zealand.
Patient harm cannot be avoided amid chronic understaffing in health sector - emergency doctor

Having been support for some older relatives during 3-4 hour waits at local Emergency Doctor.
One unlucky enough to get an urgent referral, to get someone to drive you to Hospital ED after that.
So another 5 hours to see a nurse there, and another 5 hours after to see a doctor, then finally admitted and then left for hours again, then some Xrays, then more hours and finally almost 24 Hours after this started at local emergency Doctor a few meds and tossed out the door.
Never did get the ECG Monitoring the Doctor mentioned 10 hours in.
The waiting area at least has a friendly sign to say do let someone know if you think anyone is having heart failure while waiting. I mean mostly no one would notice if you are quiet.
Its working well in South Auckland. :-)
The government has ruled out any subsidies for off-shore wind.
“Such a mechanism would be a material departure from the market-based electricity model in New Zealand. I intend to signal clearly that the Government expects offshore renewable energy projects to compete on the same commercial basis as other electricity generation. The Government’s focus is on enabling the market to deliver by creating an enabling regulatory environment,” [Simeon Brown] wrote.
We also don't want to "write a cheque" to Fonterra to help them decarbonise. On the other hand, we're A-OK to buy carbon credits from Thailand because we want to burn more coal.
Watts said Fonterra and Genesis alone could make a significant difference to New Zealand's emissions, and the government was open to talking to them about how it could help, though not necessarily "writing a cheque".
So, the Luxon government refuses to invest in New Zealand's own future either by assisting the rollout of new clean generation, or supporting one of our largest exporters to switch out fossil burning furnaces for electric, and by god we will happily send billions of dollars to Thailand to make sure we don't have to.

Handle9:gzt: Luxon stomping around the DMZ border between DPRK and South Korea a few days ago. Totally unnecessary and a waste of New Zealand's diplomatic capital. How is it a waste of New Zealand’s diplomatic capital? Are we concerned about upsetting North Korea?

North Korea is not really the issue. Luxon's strong tendency to reflexively look to USA positions without thinking is slowly but surely boxing NZ into a corner with no independence and no flexibility or maneuverability internationally. This tendency will mean a loss of credibility internationally and will have consequences in maintaining independent policy positions and an independent pacific.
National Party governments until John Key's government had a strong tendency to follow every position of the USA. John Key's National Party government in comparison maintained a lot of diplomatic independence and flexibility in comparison. Luxon is squandering that all over the place.
To take a negative and extreme example Scotty Morrison followed and repeated every diplomatically incompetent ill-considered tweet of the Trump administration most of which was not even coherent enough to call policy. Morrison's incompetent diplomacy put Australia in a completely unnecessary corner basically for nothing and is now on the hook for literally hundreds and hundreds of billions of basically useless and pointless military hardware and increasing militarization. The maintenance of an independent diplomatic position is required to avoid all that both for us and our neighbors while continuing to advocate peaceful development in the pacific.

One of the reasons we can't pay those key personnel more is because we've mistaken the act of throwing money at things like health or education for spending it wisely.

“Targets save lives.”
A speech about targets doesn't save lives. Unsure how you can say we now have targets, but avoid the date for them to be achieved. Open ended?
It appears that Simon Watts is confused about what being Minister for Climate Change means, and is considering removing carbon neutrality requirements for the public service. I sent him a letter explaining that the Minister for Climate Change is responsible for preventing it, not ensuring it.

“Targets save lives.”
HelloThere:“Targets save lives.”
Targets could also cost lives as some staff might take short cuts or not follow through with further tests to try and stay with in the target guild lines.
