This really pisses me off.
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/we-feel-abandoned-kiwi-in-dubai-describes-fear-chaos-and-lack-of-consular-support/AJ6VVF6VAFEEFAD4M4ZBKH4OPA/

It really doesn’t paint an accurate picture of what’s going on or the role of NZTE. There were problems with communication in the first few days of the conflict but it’s far from the current situation. The consular staff are really active in engaging with the New Zealand community and supporting us.

They are really active on the various New Zealand soclial media groups, for example in the different NZ WhatsApp groups they are providing daily updates on flights and are all available to provide individual support. Flights aren’t any more expensive than normal, I booked for the family to go home and it was much the same price as I would normally have paid booking months in advance.

These sort of articles are actively harming the New Zealand community in the UAE by ratcheting up family concerns. The reason I checked out for a few days was to manage our anxiety levels. This sort of stuff helps no one.

Agreed, and i really wonder why the NZ media feel the need to run it

"The resident also described a crackdown on documenting events, saying authorities had warned people not to take photos or videos under any circumstances.

“Even if it’s your own apartment, even if a drone flies into it, you can be arrested for taking a photo.”

So don't take a photo then.....

The Gulf states have had pretty restrictive media/telecoms/public order powers forever, you live there, you live by their rules..

Having said that - the current NZ Govt advice updated March 12th is "leave now"

"New Zealanders who can, should immediately leave the region on commercial flights or by road now. This is fastest way to safety"

Thats all well and good as far as it goes. Just like Covid that’s pretty straightforward if you are a tourist. If you are a long term resident you can’t just get on a plane and leave.

You also need to consider the motivations behind the advice. MFAT needs to cover their arse if someone does get hurt. If they haven’t given this advice the same media will make a huge stink.

Maybe the posts about Trump unrelated to the current conflict and his history could go in the Trump thread

The same applies to personal Gulf States adventures, right?

I will lock you from posting in this thread if you continue with this uncalled provocation.

It was just a question. If it had been a provocation, I'm sure someone would have contacted me. But no one has, and I don't really believe there's anyone like that here.

The "I was just asking questions" cop out doesn't fly with me.

The NY Times - Empowering Iran’s Hard-liners  (unlocked link)

18 March 2026

U.S.-Israeli attacks helped ultraconservatives cement power. That could make ending the war tougher.

It was the Islamic republic’s version of “Game of Thrones”: a slain leader, a council of clerics, and two dynasties - Khamenei and Khomeini - competing. All this as American and Israeli bombs rained down on the realm.

It ended, we now know, in the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s next supreme leader. He’s a man many consider to be just as hard-line as his father, who was taken out by Israeli airstrikes. ...

The hard-liners rejected any internal and external calls for regime change.

Khamenei’s son, their preferred candidate, had the backing of the powerful Revolutionary Guards, Iran’s ideologically driven military force.

The Don has dug himself into a hole, and is still digging ...  🙄

I seem to recall that during his first administration he actually had some relatively professional and competent people around him. These soon departed, with some commenting that they simply could not believe what an utter moron he is. Ignorant, dumb and just plain stupid. That doesn't seem to have improved.

The Washington Post - Pentagon seeks more than $200 billion in budget request for Iran war

breaking

The Pentagon has asked the White House to approve a more than $200 billion request to Congress to fund the war in Iran, according to a senior administration official, in an enormous new ask that is almost certain to run into resistance from lawmakers opposed to the conflict.

That number would far surpass the costs of the administration’s massive airstrike campaign to date and instead seek to urgently increase production of critical weaponry expended as U.S. and Israeli forces have struck thousands of targets over the past three weeks ...

Never mind, the tariffs will pay for it.  😶

But only a couple of weeks before this whole show kicked off, Trump held one of those big public meetings with all the heads of the arms companies where he likes to show off being the big man, and one of them - Raytheon? Whoever makes Patriot missiles - said that it would take 3 years to scale up Patriot PAC-3 interceptor production from 600 to 2000 missiles per year. Pretty sure if there was even a sniff of possibility of doing it faster for infinite money they would have already said so. I mean, we all like free government money, right?

So it will be interesting to see what this $200B actually achieves in practice.

Edit: Reuters.
