Well it’s been an eventful day for me hearing missile interceptions through a fair chunk of the afternoon. Thanks Trump and Netanyahu it’s just the way I wanted to spend the weekend.

Woke up to do Wordle just as the RNZ alert came in saying Israel believed the Ayatollah had been killed and thought "Oh f*** America, what have you done now?" Going to be an absolute cluster if Iran now goes all out and closes the Strait of Hormuz.

Russia's UN mission said Russia and China requested the meeting "in connection with the unprovoked act of armed aggression by the United States and Israel against the Islamic Republic of Iran".

Great powers have a wide range of options, but smaller powers may soon find that acquiring nuclear weapons is their only viable strategy. Looking at the current landscape, North Korea's approach was the right one.

Thanks. We are all fine.

The snap crackle and pop has started up again this morning so it’ll be another day at least of this.

Helen Clark calls Government response to Iran strikes ‘disgrace’: NZ Herald

Former Prime Minister Helen Clark has labelled the New Zealand Government’s response to the situation in Iran a “disgrace”.
...
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters issued a joint statement condemning “in the strongest terms” Iran’s “indiscriminate” retaliatory attacks.

Clark took to social media to criticise the Government’s statement.

“It knows full well that international law has been breached even though negotiations on Iran’s nuclear capability were underway,” she posted on Instagram.

“It knows that US walked away from the last nuclear agreement with Iran. Why the servility? I guess we know.”

Clark retweeted a post from The Elders, an independent advocacy group linking senior public figures, which condemned military strikes by the US and Israel on Iran.

“The Iranian Government’s systematic denial of human rights and its brutal suppression of protests are indefensible and must be condemned without reservation,” The Elders chair Juan Manuel Santos wrote.

“Yet history shows that wars aimed at regime change deliver neither democracy nor stability.”

A satellite image shows black smoke rising at the compound of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The NY Times - The C.I.A. Helped Pinpoint a Gathering of Iranian Leaders. Then Israel Struck.

01 March 2026

The killing of Iran’s supreme leader and other top Iranian officials came after close intelligence sharing between the United States and Israel ...

Shortly before the United States and Israel were poised to launch an attack on Iran, the C.I.A. zeroed in on the location of perhaps the most important target: Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country’s supreme leader.

The C.I.A. had been tracking Ayatollah Khamenei for months, gaining more confidence about his locations and his patterns, according to people familiar with the operation.

Then the agency learned that a meeting of top Iranian officials would take place on Saturday morning at a leadership compound in the heart of Tehran.

Most critically, the C.I.A. learned that the supreme leader would be at the site.

Didn't the President of Peace Trump say it's a Venezuala / Madera type coup? The US would eliminate the evil head of government, and then someone would step in.

How does intentionally "elimination of top Iranian officials" accomplish this?

It sounds like Israel Benjamin Netanyahu was calling the shots: kill 'em all, and let God sort it out.

You'll remember as of January 27, 2026, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists set the Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds to midnight. At that time it was the closest it has ever been to catastrophe.

I'm pretty sure we lept forward in time quite a few seconds.

Slightly updated New York Times text

Then the agency learned that a meeting of top Iranian officials would take place on Saturday morning at a leadership compound in the heart of Tehran. Most critically, the C.I.A. learned that the supreme leader would be at the site.

The United States and Israel decided to adjust the timing of their attack, in part to take advantage of the new intelligence, according to officials with knowledge of the decisions.

The information provided a window of opportunity for the two countries to achieve a critical and early victory: the elimination of top Iranian officials and the killing of Ayatollah Khamenei.

The remarkably swift removal of Iran’s supreme leader reflected the close coordination and intelligence sharing between the United States and Israel in the run-up to the attack, and the deep intelligence the countries had developed on Iranian leadership, especially in the wake of last year’s 12-day war. The operation also showed the failure of Iran’s leaders to take adequate precautions to avoid exposing themselves at a time where both Israel and the United States sent clear signals that they were preparing for war.

The C.I.A. passed its intelligence, which offered “high fidelity” on Ayatollah Khamenei’s position, to Israel, according to people briefed on the intelligence.

US troops in Iran racing against the clock before running out of ammo: report

Logistics is hard. MAGAnuts are stupid.

U.S. troops in Iran are staring down a difficult situation in the wake of strikes that killed Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to a new report.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that U.S. troops are racing to destroy Iran's ballistic and nuclear missile facilities before they run out of interceptors to defend from Iranian retaliatory strikes. The exact size of the military's ammunition base is classified, but analysts and former officials who spoke to The Journal said the stockpile has been diminished after repeated conflicts in the region.

At the same time, military troops are working to fend off a series of retaliatory strikes from the Iranians. U.S. Central Command said on Saturday that they mounted a "largely successful defense against hundreds of Iranian missile and drone attacks," according to the report.

Trump after initially saying - over very quickly, then saying a week - has increased his timeline to "four weeks or less"

The Straights of Hormuz are predictably closed, and the oil price is predictably increasing.

No doubt the collateral damage and casualties are increasing although we'll only hear the worst of that long after it's over. Israel is now additionally bombing targets in Lebanon after receiving a short volley from an armed group in that country.

Harsh words, but true ...

AlterNet - The two most dangerous men on earth are totally out of control

D. Earl Stephens

March 02, 2026

This week, two old power-hungry, greedy, lawless men are in the process of killing countless hundreds and thousands of innocent human beings, while destabilizing a world they most likely won’t be living in a decade from now.

Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu and the United States’ Donald Trump have proven without a shadow of a doubt that they are the two most dangerous men on earth, and everything should be done to stop them, because they are way the hell out of control. ...

So today we are in yet another war in the Middle East, and nobody but gutless men like Trump and Netanyahu will come out any better for it.

(D. Earl Stephens is the author of “Toxic Tales: A Caustic Collection of Donald J. Trump’s Very Important Letters”)

EDIT: Trump has initiated military action eight times in 2025, carrying out attacks in seven countries (Syria, Iraq, Iran, Nigeria, Yemen, Somalia, and Venezuela).
