SaltyNZ: Seymour now going to war on teachers.
Seymour is not the Minister of Education. It is surprising the National party let him get away this kind of thing on multiple topics.
Oh. Seymour is the Associate Minister. The actual Minister of Education is Erica Stanford who is not reported on saying anything anywhere in relation to the topics in that article.

Its pretty much a certainly that we'll end up paying more for smaller, less able ferries without the rail capabilities. And by the time the cost of still required port side upgrades are added to the sunk costs and cancellation fees it will end up costing more than the "cost blow out" ever did.
It just amazes me that $30+ Billion for roads is perfectly fine but $3Bn for a future proofed link between the North and South Islands which would improve productivity and reduce freight costs and, by the way, become absolutely critical in the event of the "big one" ever hitting Wellington somehow isn't.
RNZ's Week In Politics had a piece this week on exactly this and how the three parties can't agree on what's best:
See under: "Dire straits".
This week's Secret Diary is quite funny:

especially with lines like this, easy to see who's really running the show:
DAVID SEYMOUR

CHRISTOPHER LUXON
Okay.

When asked what he would say to the councils who have expressed worry about road safety due to the upcoming change in speed limits, Brown said authorities need to focus on the highest risk times and behaviours.
He said the evidence is clear that drunk drivers and those under the influence of drugs are most responsible for the road toll.
How is this meant to help, by saving a whole 5 minutes? And I'm not sure his second comment is accurate, either.
God, I can't stand Simeon Brown.
Maybe National/Luxon had not asked Seymour before making its promises.
At least important dog whistles like Speed Limits are getting priority.
Did National check its numbers before new Dunedin Hospital promises?

After announcing the Dunedin Hospital rebuild plan is now too costly, Minister of Infrastructure Chris Bishop says he regrets election promises that it would go ahead - but would not say if his party had run the numbers before making promises.
Opposition to plans to downgrade the project has been vocal, including from the healthcare sector and local politicians. Among them was Waitaki District mayor Gary Kircher, who described the latest development as "a pig's breakfast".

That $135 Million for ACT schools has to come from somewhere...
More detail on the limits change:
Stuff: Speed limit reductions reversing back to 2019, transport minister says: From 1 July, 2025, speed limit reductions introduced since 31 December 2019 would be undone. This would return many 30kph urban roads and 80kph zones to previous 50kph and 100kph speed limits. The rule would also require variable speed limit zones outside schools during pick up and drop off times by 1 July 2026. It would also enable speed limits up to 120kph on Roads of National Significance where it was safe. “By 1 July 2026, local streets outside a school will be required to have a 30kph variable speed limit,” Brown said in a statement. “Rural roads that are outside schools will be required to have variable speed limits of 60kph or less.”
I'm semi-rural. I'm not sure if I noticed any change in limits after 2019. Could be because there are so many cyclone roadworks and random damages slowing things down anyway. The suburban streets I use on trips to the suburbs I have not noticed any change in limits. My feeling is the majority of suburban streets most drivers as soon as you reach 50 it's time to hit the brakes anyway. In reality 30 or 35 is probably the average and is not imposing on anyone. Some of this seems like being anti-something for the sake of being anti something.

... but we also promised tax cuts to landlords which is more important, even though it could cover the entire cost of the hospital, not just the increase.
... but we also promised tax cuts of $20 a fortnight to middle class wage earners which is more important, even though it would cover the cost of five hospitals, not just the increase.

They promised everything without saying what couldn't be done because you can't always do everything.
Then, instead of prioritising health, they decided to give money to landlords and tobacco companies.
But tell us again how this government is planning for the future.

Do we need a running thread of broken promises and/or plain stupid actions?
- Smoke free / excise tax thing - stupid, unnecessary and short sighted. There was very limited upside to this change, and it may or may not be true about the driving of tobacco sales underground, but thats a fairly weak argument against the known negative impacts of smoking.
- Speed Limits - How long have the police and/or road safety campaigned on slowing down in higher risk areas. I'll admit to not agreeing with some of the lower limits on various open roads and the 30km/h limit in Christchurch central streets is painfully slow, but a blanket removal of these along with an extra 20km/h on certain roads is plain dumb, all to save commuters a few minutes on their journey?
