freitasm:

Also, Trump's beautiful wall is a full 80 miles... Out of 1,954 miles total border with Mexico.

47 miles (76 km) being replacement of existing outdated or dilapidated barriers.

We Build the Wall, a private organization founded by military veteran Brian Kolfage, raised over $25 million.

Their accomplishments? without submitting plans to anyone, built a half-mile (800 m) "weathered steel" bollard fence for $6 to 8 million. A judge ordered the group to stop because it was near the Rio Grande, and created a flooding risk

Trump gave them $1.7 billion in contracts from his administration.

Four people were arrested and charged on two counts of fraud; they defrauded hundreds of thousands of donors funneling over $1 million from We Build the Wall for personal expenses.

Who wants to bet they get pardons?

Looks like the second impeachment will stick.

I guess Trump can't "shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters".

New York Times: McConnell blames Trump for having ‘provoked’ mob

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Republican-Kentucky.) pointedly blamed President Trump on Tuesday for having “provoked” the violent mob that stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6.

His remarks on the Senate floor came shortly before President-elect Joe Biden was scheduled to head to Washington after a farewell event in Wilmington, Del., where he has been conducting his transition. On the final full day of his White House tenure, President Trump is expected to release a video and could issue scores of pardons.

Senate confirmation hearings are being held for five of Biden’s Cabinet nominees throughout the day on a heavily fortified Capitol Hill, where preparations also continue for Biden’s swearing-in at noon Wednesday.

The Washington Post - Pence will not attend Trump’s send-off at Joint Base Andrews, officials say

Vice President Pence is not expected to attend Trump’s send-off at Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday morning, according to White House officials.

Pence is attending Biden’s inauguration later in the day, and aides said it would be logistically challenging for the vice president to do both.

The Air Force base is about 13 miles, or a 10-minute helicopter ride, from the White House.

McConnell has figured he has an opportunity to break Trumps hold over the GOP so he will vote for impeachment and a shed load of Republicans will vote with him. Game over for Trump.

McConnell himself has nothing to lose. He's just been elected for another 6 years after which he will retire so the threat of losing his seat is not a problem. He's pushed the Supreme Court to the right with Trumps help and he'll be hoping to regain control of the senate when the next round of elections come up in 2 years time. And maybe another more moderate (compared to DT) Republican President in 4 years time.

So possibly a pretty successful end to a long career. First step though - make sure there is no Trump comeback.

Being classless, tacky and self-centered extends (of course) to Melania.

Like her hubby using Pence as a manservant, Melania's turned over all responsibility to another, the chief usher.

(Doctor Jill Biden has a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.))

New York Times: They Prepare the White House for a New President. They Have 5 Hours.

...“Mrs. Trump should have invited Dr. Biden in for the traditional coffee,” said Capricia Marshall, who served as White House social secretary in the Clinton administration and oversaw that president’s departure in 2001, referring to Melania Trump, the first lady. “Typically, she would come prepared with questions, she’ll meet and talk to the chef, the full time residence staff and have an opportunity for them to break the ice. It’s a courtesy, but logistically it’s incredibly helpful. That didn’t happen.”

Mrs. Trump, according to CNN, has been packing for weeks, eager to move out of the White House with her 14-year-old son, Barron, and on with their lives. She has had no communication with Dr. Biden.

The Biden transition team has, however, been in contact with Timothy Harleth, the chief usher who was hired by Mrs. Trump in 2017 from his post as director of rooms at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, to coordinate the move.

Mr. Harleth’s appointment was highly unusual: the chief usher has typically been a nonpolitical public servant, often with a military background, who does not turn over with administrations. Because of Mr. Harleth’s connection to the Trump Organization, some had speculated that he would leave with the outgoing president.

I don't subscribe to this idea of a Trump dynasty either. There is just not the depth of talent there.

There's no way Ivanka could appeal to a large swathe of voters especially with that creepy husband of hers and Trump Jr simply doesn't have the skill set. Shouts a lot but IMO a lot of dyed in the wool GOP voters have had enough of that style. And that's it - there are no other candidates.

And Trump had a big public presence as a reality TV star for many years before he ran for President. Those two had no real public presence before he ran/became President.

Once he's gone they are all gone.

Part of Trump's appeal is that he claimed to be a business genius, a financial god, that he would bring his "winning" to the everybody, and by emulating their hero, they'd be winners also. Case in point, Trump University.

We all know this is false. His recipe:
  • a little of Daddy's bankroll

  • a little good old-fashioned grifting (small-scale swindling)

  • a little of ignoring contracts obligations, such as paying for work done

  • a little being abusing the court system, being litigious

  • a little paying-off / burying bad publicity / misuse of non-disclosure agreements

  • a lot of being a scum bag
Now with his tax information finally seeing the light of day, very slowly Americans idiots are coming to understand that can't emulate Trump's "winning" ways for themselves.

So Trump Jr, Baron, Eric, Ivanka brands are also hurt

If Trump wasn't such a f__k up, maybe his children would have a chance.

Given the low-caliber people who have been state Governors, perhaps Trump Jr has a chance there (Wyoming? Montana? Kansas?)

The New York Times - The Financial Minefield Awaiting an Ex-President Trump

today

Not long after he strides across the White House grounds Wednesday morning for the last time as president, Donald J. Trump will step into a financial minefield that appears to be unlike anything he has faced since his earlier brushes with collapse.

The tax records that he has long fought to keep hidden, revealed in a New York Times investigation last September, detailed his financial challenges:

Many of his resorts were losing millions of dollars a year even before the pandemic struck.

Hundreds of millions of dollars in loans, which he personally guaranteed, must be repaid within a few years.

He has burned through much of his cash and easy-to-sell assets.

And a decade-old I.R.S. audit threatens to cost him more than $100 million to resolve.

In his earlier dark moments, Mr. Trump was able to rescue businesses he runs with multimillion-dollar infusions from his father or licensing deals borne of his television celebrity. Those lifelines are gone.

And his divisive presidency has steadily eroded the mainstream marketability of the brand that is at the heart of his business.

That trend has only accelerated with his evidence-free campaign to subvert the outcome of the presidential election, which culminated in the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol.

In its wake, his last-ditch lender vowed to cut him off. ...

Trump is so reputationally toxic that a lot of financial institutions won’t want to do business with him,” said Adam J. Levitin, a law professor at Georgetown University who focuses on finance and bankruptcy.

WHITE HOUSE WARNS THAT COUNTERFEIT PARDONS ARE BEING SOLD ONLINE

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—With thousands of desperate criminals seeking pardons on Donald J. Trump’s last full day in office, the White House issued a warning about scammers selling counterfeit pardons online.

According to the advisory, many pardon buyers have been duped by such fraudulent Web sites as AuthenticTrumpPardons.com, which purports to offer clemency for as little as twenty-five thousand dollars a pardon.

“That is not a Web site authorized by Donald J. Trump,” the White House statement read. “It originates from a server in Peking.”

Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, said that fraudsters selling phony pardons are “the lowest of the low.”

“It’s very sad that there are scammers out there willing to take advantage of well-meaning felons who are sincerely trying to purchase a pardon,” Meadows said. “My advice is this: if someone is trying to sell you a pardon for less than two million dollars, it’s fake.”

"The worst final popularity rating ever for a first lady belongs to Melania Trump"

Much has been written about President Donald Trump's historically low popularity ratings as he leaves office. But the tarnish on the Trump brand goes beyond the President.

Melania Trump leaves the White House with the worst popularity rating for any first lady at the end of her term in polling history.

The latest CNN/SSRS poll had Trump's favorable rating at 42% to a 47% unfavorable rating. The 47% is the highest unfavorable rating we ever recorded for Trump. It's also amazingly high from a historical perspective.

Traditionally, first ladies are nearly uniformly admired. The position is unelected and normally uncontroversial. It's hard to be unpopular.
