McConnell is a professional hypocrite, trying to have it both ways. They can't get rid of him, but they can ring-fence him at the next election. Let him sit in his senate chair dribbling into his bib.

gzt: Is there any particular timeboxed part of the proceedings I can view for that? Four days of it could be a bit much.

or a video of the best bits..

Wait for the movie, it'll be out soon.

Meanwhile, Google for, then watch, 'The Comey Rule'. Fascinating. PM me if you need a hand.

One way or the other this is going to cost him and his family a truck load of money, which is his most precious possession.

He will be able to fund raise all the money he needs to cover the costs of anything unfortunately.

Indeed McConnell is a pathologically shameless hypocrite, but I found his speech more interesting than the (predictable) Trump acquittal. ...

The Washington Post - Sen. McConnell, who voted to acquit Trump, says former president is ‘practically and morally responsible’ for provoking attack on Capitol

breaking

In remarks on the Senate floor after he voted to acquit Trump, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Saturday that the former president is “practically and morally responsible” for provoking the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol - but that the Senate was upholding the Constitution by acquitting him.

The Senate’s decision today does not condone anything that happened on or before that terrible day,” McConnell said. “It simply shows that senators did what the former president failed to do: We put our constitutional duty first.” ...

McConnell spent much of his remarks condemning Trump’s actions and directly linking them to the Jan. 6 insurrection.

The former president’s supporters, he argued, launched their violent attack “because they had been fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on Earth, because he was angry he lost an election.”

There’s no question - none - that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day,” McConnell said at one point. “No question about it.”

He argued, however, that it was beyond the power of the Senate to hold Trump accountable for those actions.

This body is not invited to act as the nation’s overarching moral tribunal,” McConnell said. “We’re not free to work backward from whether the accused party might personally deserve some kind of punishment.”

Immediately after Trump’s impeachment by the House last month, McConnell blocked the Senate from swiftly beginning a trial while Trump was still in office. ...

Without mentioning his own role in blocking an earlier trial, McConnell said Saturday that he might have voted differently if Trump were still president.

If President Trump were still in office, I would have carefully considered whether the House managers proved their specific charge,” he said.

Absolutely. Although given Trump's record on paying people, I bet they've all insisted on being paid up front...

BBC News - What next for Republican rebels?

today

As Democrats keep telling us: this was the most bipartisan impeachment vote in US history.

Seven Republican Senators crossed party lines and voted to convict. So what awaits them now?

For two of them, the political consequences won't matter very much. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania and Richard Burr of North Carolina are both retiring.

Three others - Susan Collins, Ben Sasse and Bill Cassidy - were just elected in November and so will have six more years to win back any voters angered by their decision today.

Mitt Romney has less time - he is up for election again in 2024. But as a moderate and long-time critic of Trump, he's never been a favourite of his party's more right-wing voters, and is very popular in his home state of Utah.

Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has even less time - she'll face voters again in 2022. But much like Romney, she has long endeared herself to voters there with her moderate approach, and the open primary system in Alaska makes her a strong candidate. ...

We've been discussing the future of the seven Republicans who voted to convict.

It's only been a couple of hours since the Senate took its vote, but they are already facing a backlash from within their party.

Donald Trump Jr posted on Twitter suggesting that there be an impeachment for the "RINOS" - Republicans in name only - an insult frequently favoured by his father.

And Fox TV host Laura Ingraham has predicted that "None of the Republicans who voted in the affirmative today will speak at the 2024 GOP Convention" - where speaker slots indicate who holds the power in the party.

The speeches of the managers after the acquittal were better, especially the impromptu one of Speaker Pelosi.

As I expected. You need to get him on his balls by investigating his (possible) financial crimes as citizen Trump when there is no voting about crimes but the law. ;-)

The New York Times - Letters - The ‘Disgraceful Acquittal’ of Donald Trump

today

To the Editor:

For Mitch McConnell to publicly profess Donald Trump’s guilt, while hiding behind his claim of the unconstitutionality of the impeachment trial, is hypocrisy par excellence from the master of hypocrisy.

Mr. McConnell himself refused to call back the Senate to receive the article of impeachment while Mr. Trump was in office, thereby creating the very impediment to conviction he cites.

Given that the House voted to impeach on Jan. 13, and this trial took five days, there would have been time for the trial to reach its conclusion before the change of administration on Jan. 20.

JaseNZ: He will be able to fund raise all the money he needs to cover the costs of anything unfortunately.

Can he use electioneering funds to pay for non-electioneering court cases? If he can't and he does then surely he must be breaking a law somewhere. If I was the electoral commission I would be having him and his electoral party books constantly under a microscope.

JaseNZ: All his lawyers will be rubbing their hands together going cha ching.

As someone above just said, he has a habit of not paying. Any lawyer should be triple dotting the I's and crossing the T's and personally get him to sign any and all contracts.

Mind you he might just give Rudy Giuliani a clean bib and a tommee tippee bottle of chocolate milk. 🍼
