JWR:  Isn't that just a little bit racist, sexist and ageist?

As someone who is 6 months older than Trump, I know a f***ing moron when I see one.

I recognize Donald Trump and his sycophantic followers as a symptom of America's decay.

Up yours, Donald.   😉

Actually, it's also a bit religious-ist, which is a damn good thing. Thank Dog for rationalists and the wisdom of senior people 😜.

Criticizing religion is fine IMO. It is just ideas and let people challenge and defend those.

But, race, gender and age are things a person can't change.

They also have no bearing on the wisdom or rationality of a person.

The post was actually about evangelicals.

As far as Trump goes.. I think he was an incompetent, narcissistic, fool of a president. I am glad he is gone.

Was he in the group of 10 worst presidents of all time? Probably not!

In recent times, I would rate George Bush as far worse. He caused the death of anywhere from 165,000 to 1 million Iraqis.

You could also look at the presidents when slavery was legal in the US and ignored the issue.

Ah, evangelicals. A greatly misunderstood group. According to Pew Research, most of them are women, though of course they are mainly led by men. Less than 40% are baby boomers. Only 23% are old white people. But all of them absolutely believe that Adam rode around on dinosaurs 6,000 years ago!

More diverse than I would have expected.

I was actually a "born again Baptist" in the 1980's. I'm ashamed to admit it, but they were an over-sexed, hard-drinking group, which as an underaged teenage boy had a lot of appeal.

Get knocked-out drunk on Saturday, with everyone coveting their respective neighbor's wife, servants, oxen and donkies.

When publicly asking for forgiveness on Sunday, the more immoral, dishonorable, distasteful, contemptuous or perverse, the more popular you became.

My mother didn't like the company I was keeping, and that was the end of my evangelical days.

I still think fondly of the many comely lasses, from my youthful age to the wayward wives, I met during that period.

Whoa and I was so young in the 80's, all the fun stuff I missed out on. Sigh.

In fact I really miss the 80s, now I think about it. Thinking of politics from that era, was Reagan a better president than Trump? I would say yes, at least he had some governmental experience before becoming President. Bush's Dad, not so much but I clearly remember the Gulf War (I was at high school by this point) but all I really knew was "Saddam Hussein is a bad man and we have to get him out of Kuwait."

I'll always remember hearing that on Radio Marlborough (I was in Blenheim for the school holidays)..."Radio New Zealand news, leading the news..."

If anyone else remembers that line I'll be impressed (and surprised!) :)

If you think the 80's were something, you really missed out on the 60's.

The Washington Post - Opinion - Mitch McConnell got exactly what he deserved

today

You did not need to be an avid political watcher to know that when Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) spared former president Donald Trump the indignity of conviction, but then took to the floor to pronounce Trump’s guilt, it was not going to end well for the two of them.

Everyone who has dealt with a cranky toddler knows that if you give in to a temper tantrum, whatever warning you give after the fact is going to fall on deaf ears.

After his acquittal, the disgraced former president decried McConnell as a “dour, sullen, and unsmiling political hack” (Trump has an uncanny knack for defining his GOP opponents) and declared: “If Republican senators are going to stay with him, they will not win again.”

For all his supposed political savviness, it is hard to understand how McConnell thought, as the New York Times reported he has said in private, that “the impeachment proceedings would make it easier for Republicans to eventually purge Mr. Trump from the party.” ...

Forbes: Here Are The Billionaires Who Donated To Donald Trump’s 2020 Presidential Campaign

...Some clearly benefited from having a friend in the White House.

Miriam Adelson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Kelcy Warren, chief executive of Energy Transfer Partners, got clearance for his Dakota Access Pipeline, as well as a seat on the board of trustees at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Harold Hamm, the oil baron, became an informal advisor.

Linda McMahon, who is married to WWE Chief Executive Vince McMahon, accepted a role as head of the Small Business Administration, before moving on to chair a pro-Trump super-PAC named America First Action.

On average, the donors contributed about $285,000 to the Trump campaign and its joint-fundraising committees, which split their hauls with the Republican Party. About 9% of Trump’s billionaire donors, however, gave less than $5,000. At least 19 also donated to pro-Trump super-PACs. Unlike other types of political committees, super-PACs can accept unlimited amounts of money.

The Adelsons, for instance, gave $90 million to a pro-Trump super-PAC called Preserve America.

Marvel Entertainment billionaire Isaac Perlmutter and his wife, Laura, gave $21 million to America First.

Kelcy Warren donated $10 million to the same group.

A little hard to have sympathy for sycophants who privately complain about the boss, and also complain the public looked down on them. Worse because they kept the job for years.

Washingtonian:Trump Hotel Employees Reveal What It Was Really Like Catering to the Right Wing Elite
  • Former employees at Trump hotel said they had to pretend to support the president while on the job.

  • The hotel staff said they would also face harassment from anti-Trump activists.

  • However, one huge perk of the job: getting paid well.

They're not sycophants, they're people forced to remain at a job they hate because of the US' broken employment/healthcare/education/social welfare system. Same as the people who were forced to risk their lives to work during a pandemic, you either work at a job you really don't want to work at or get no food, roof over your head, healthcare, or (proper) schooling for your kids.

The New York Times - Opinion - The Life and Death of a Woman-Hater

20 Feb 2021

When the conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh died on Wednesday of complications from cancer, he ended a decades-long career as one of the most malignant and sadistic figures on the right. ...

He anchored his banter with a steady stream of invective, by turns promoting xenophobia, racism, homophobia and misogyny, teeing up a ready-made audience for the cruelty politics of Donald Trump.

But perhaps one of Mr. Limbaugh’s most significant and longest-lasting impacts stemmed from his loud opposition to women’s rights ...

This from a man who trumpeted the importance of traditional family values before he died childless and on his fourth marriage to a much younger woman. ...
