So, Luxon doesn't care about his polling numbers. Maybe he would care a bit more if they dropped to a precipitously low level?

I'm sure I've seen a good poll he had recently where he was crowing about the great numbers he had and that therefore everyone was happy with him and the job he was doing?

I don't know who wrote this editorial/opinion piece but I agree with it - Costello should go.

Poll numbers are little more than an opportunity for talking points for the media at this stage of the election cycle. 12 months in and a fairly bumpy / controversial 12 months at that, not really surprising to see numbers dip.

A more interesting poll question would be "if you could go back and vote again, would you change your vote"? Wouldn't necessarily need to know who you voted for, but would show a clear view of approve or disapprove of your party's performance.

Surprising that Seymour was up on preferred PM (only slightly) given Act's polarizing policies.

Yes, but...

In Luxon’s case, he appears to have difficulty explaining the government’s harder decisions with the ease that some of his predecessors have. Decisions around spending cuts, particularly in health and education are always going to be unpopular on their own, but they needn’t dent the government’s popularity in the way they appear to have done here. In the midst of the fairly serious fiscal problem in which the government finds itself, there is a case for trimming spending to ensure those services are sustainable in the long term (if, that is, the electorate decides it does not want to pay more tax to fund them).

Alas for Luxon, his pre-programmed answers to questions, which occasionally reduce his interactions with the press gallery to a game of human bop it, seem to lack the explaining gift, and his polling, it would appear, is suffering for it.

Speaking of polls, the same one revealed Luxon appears to be considered "out of touch" by most voters (51%):

https://www.1news.co.nz/2024/10/15/poll-just-over-half-think-pm-luxon-out-of-touch-with-voters/

https://archive.ph/TGiwT >> this piece says 52% of voters think Chris Hipkins should stay as leader of Labour, also:

In talking to people protesting about the hospital in Dunedin, Luxon was brusque when he assured them they would get a rebuilt hospital, just not a bells and whistles one.
He repeatedly used the line it would still be “the most expensive hospital in the Southern Hemisphere” – a ridiculous line given it would also be the newest and almost inevitably cost a lot more than the last one thanks to inflation and the cost of things.
It sounded as if he expected the citizens of Otago to be grateful for the crumbs he was throwing, rather than demanding what National had promised on the campaign.

and finally: https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/16-10-2024/all-the-things-christopher-luxon-gets >> a list of everything that Luxon gets.

As ACT, National, NZF make life difficult for Patents and Doctors with cuts, Australia offers a beacon of hope.
Move to Australia.

New Zealand GPs have condemned a move by Australia to remove red tape and make it easier for doctors here to work across the Tasman.

"We're way behind already," president of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners Samantha Murton said.

"If we reduce that even further by people going easily to Australia, then our patients are going to miss out."

From Monday, doctors from New Zealand, the UK and Ireland who want to practice medicine in Australia will no longer need to be individually assessed by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners to practice medicine. They'll still need to complete registration and other checks.

Truly we are Sydney, Melbourne, Perth or Cairns for beginners, Australia's skills training ground.

The "solution" is to apply it to everyone.

You aren't exactly unbiased on this topic, and I think you know this. You're very quick to criticise anything that takes away from property investors and shout that you'll just invest in the Gold Coast instead.

I agree with you that a balanced approach is necessary to be fair, but "give into the property investor lobby and screw PPOR owners or alight investors on a golden pedestal" ain't it, sorry. That's your self-interest talking.

Of course, on the Gold Coast, they have had a CGT since 1985.

To be fair there's lots of complaints about the government cuts. There is a total absence of complaints about how they paid for them because that what was voted for.

I'm not exactly sure what that means but I am absolutely willing to come up with a complaint about it once I know. ;-)

They voted national to get their tax deductions back.

They have many complaints about the consequences of those tax deductions.

This is what they voted for but don't want to admit it.

Ah! Yeah, I see. I wonder how many South Island National/ACT/NZF voters are regretting their decision right now.

Amongst other things, I see Luxon telling them that the Labour government denied buyouts for flood-prone houses in Dunedin ... in May 2024.

It's like Trump complaining of Biden's interference in the 2020 elections when Trump himself was President.

Or MAGAs asking where Obama was during the 9/11 attacks - when G W Bush Jr was President.

Its not like Luxon said 'of course we will approve the buyouts'. (As far as I saw)

Probably.
Oh I have to get permission from David Seymour, wait till he is in an especially good mood.
Yeh Nah, its not happening, lets blame Labour.

Straight to blaming Labour for not pre-emtively Tax and Spending. Its easy when you have Crystal Balls.
Its a win win, we could have done Labour over of the flagrant spending and not be faced with problem ourselves.
