But yet his hangers-on at his rallies are (literally) hanging on his every word? That's the part I don't get. Maybe they do better at the spoken word than the written word.

People are more involved in live events than passive, non-live ones. That's why they pay $50-100 to get crammed into a stadium with a bazillion other people to listen to a selection of 20c Spotify songs.

‘Two Americas’ may emerge as Delta variant spreads and vaccination rates drop

Only 52% of Republicans said they were partially or fully vaccinated, and 29% said they have no intention of getting a vaccine, according to a CBS News/YouGov poll. 77% of Democrats said they were already vaccinated, with just 5% responding that were resisting the vaccine.

“I call it two Covid nations,” Peter Hotez, a vaccine researcher at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, told BuzzFeed News.

How broken does your country have to be when a life/death choice becomes a political statement?

Comments from the resident psychologist (any possible misrepresentations are mine): People are looking for entertainment, for a spectacle, rather than caring much about the message. He could be reading a shopping list at them as long as they're part of the group experience. This also means that he can play to the mob, which you can't do in a book or any other non-interactive medium.

He'll also use simple messages that they can understand - snark aside, one suspects most of Trump's fans aren't big readers - so if he does communicate in written form then Twitter is the ideal medium, not a lengthy book.

This should be a good read ...   😶

“Nightmare Scenario: Inside the Trump Administration’s Response to the Pandemic That Changed History”

The Washington Post - New book offers fresh details about chaos, conflicts inside Trump’s pandemic response

The Guardian - Trump proposed sending Americans with Covid to Guantánamo, book claims

The publishers blurb:

From the Washington Post journalists Yasmeen Abutaleb and Damian Paletta - the definitive account of the Trump administration’s tragic mismanagement of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the chaos, incompetence, and craven politicization that has led to more than a half million American deaths and counting.

Since the day Donald Trump was elected, his critics warned that an unexpected crisis would test the former reality-television host - and they predicted that the president would prove unable to meet the moment. In 2020, that crisis came to pass, with the outcomes more devastating and consequential than anyone dared to imagine. Nightmare Scenario is the complete story of Donald Trump’s handling - and mishandling - of the COVID-19 catastrophe, during the period of January 2020 up to Election Day that year. Yasmeen Abutaleb and Damian Paletta take us deep inside the White House, from the Situation Room to the Oval Office, to show how the members of the administration launched an all-out war against the health agencies, doctors, and scientific communities, all in their futile attempts to wish away the worst global pandemic in a century.

From the initial discovery of this new coronavirus, President Trump refused to take responsibility, disputed the recommendations of his own pandemic task force, claimed the virus would “just disappear,” mocked advocates for safe-health practices, and encouraged his base and the entire GOP to ignore or rescind public health safety measures. Abutaleb and Paletta reveal the numerous times officials tried to dissuade Trump from following his worst impulses as he defied recommendations from the experts and even members of his own administration. And they show how the petty backstabbing and rivalries among cabinet members, staff, and aides created a toxic environment of blame, sycophancy, and political pressure that did profound damage to the public health institutions that Americans needed the most during this time. Even after an outbreak in the fall that swept through the White House and infected Trump himself, he remained defiant in his approach to the virus, very likely costing him his own reelection.

Based on exhaustive reporting and hundreds of hours of interviews from inside the disaster zone at all levels of authority, Nightmare Scenario is a riveting account of how the United States government failed its people as never before, a tragedy whose devastating aftershocks will linger and be felt by generations to come.

MCCONNELL WARNS THAT NEW BILL COULD BRING U.S. TO BRINK OF DEMOCRACY

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Blasting the For the People Act, Senator Mitch McConnell claimed that the bill’s passage would bring the United States “to the brink of democracy.”

“The Democrats can dress this bill up any way they want, but their real agenda couldn’t be clearer,” the Senate Minority Leader said. “They want to turn the United States of America that we love and cherish into a democracy.”

Noting that the word “democracy” originated in ancient Greece, he vowed, “I will not sit idly by and watch a foreign form of government sneak across our border.”

McConnell rallied his fellow Republican senators by reminding them that “we’re the only thing standing between this country and democracy.”

“The people who voted for us did not vote for us so that other people could vote for other people,” he said.

"Saturday Night Live",, Late Night Shows Probed By Feds Because No. 45 Couldn't Take A Joke

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

Today we learned that the former president, upset about jokes made at his expense on television, asked the FCC and Department of Justice to probe Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Kimmel Live and other late night shows, presumably to pressure them for more favorable coverage.

Trump ally and U.S. Representative Morris Jackson "Mo" Brooks Jr. represent Alabama.

Democrat Eric Swalwell has spent months now trying to hold Republican Rep. Mo Brooks accountable for his role in the deadly insurrection at the United States Capitol in January. "Mo" strategy: hide from process servers.

More about "Mo": just hours after Trump supporters stormed the United States Capitol, Brooks claimed that over 1 million illegal immigrants voted for Joe Biden in the 2020 United States presidential election[110] and objected to counting Arizona's electoral votes on that basis. According to Brooks, Biden promised to create a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants in order to get their votes.

Unrelated "Mo" was one of 14 House Republicans to vote against legislation to establish June 19, when US slavery was abolished, as a federal holiday.

Ivanka and Jared want to distance themselves from Trump's whining about losing the election:

(is it just me, or does he look like a real smarmy git in that photo? Maybe he always looks like that and I've never noticed).

Not "smarmy git" (well, that too), but I think the more appropriate term is "fair-weather friend". A blatant opportunist, like many of the other Trump sycophants, who'll run as soon as the gravy train stops.

She ticked all the right boxes for a quick and light sentence:
  • didn't waste the court's time
  • first offender
  • non-violent
  • no damage (except to democracy)
  • remorseful

Trespassing for only 10 minutes didn't hurt either.

It's always a gamble what kind of sentence you get in the States. A small change in circumstances can have a severe, and life ruining, affect on the sentence.

Trump's application check list:

Related?

Blatant opportunist / looking to make serious change?

Toadie / yes man?

No pesky morals?

Make attacks directed against a person rather than the issue?

Willing to take a bullet to save me / easy to throw under the bus?

No background in the job. (keep out troublemakers)

You're hired!

Giuliani loses law license!

Rudy Giuliani, the former personal lawyer for former President Donald Trump who once held one of the legal profession's most prestigious jobs, was suspended Thursday from practicing law in New York state by an appellate court that found he made "demonstrably false and misleading statements" about the 2020 election.

...

"The seriousness of respondent's uncontroverted misconduct cannot be overstated," the court concluded. "This country is being torn apart by continued attacks on the legitimacy of the 2020 election and of our current president, Joseph R. Biden. The hallmark of our democracy is predicated on free and fair elections. False statements intended to foment a loss of confidence in our elections and resulting loss of confidence in government generally damage the proper functioning of a free society."
