Iran may also be handy as they seem to have had no problem securing some pretty fancy stuff, so may be in the on selling game too.
Apparently shipping across the Caspian Sea from Iran to Russia has exploded.

Yes, Iran's got an entire sanctions-busting trade network they've developed over years. Last week the Ukrainians were showing off pictures of Irish-made carburettors that were found on a drone engine. Earlier in the year I read about a global wave of thefts of jetskis - the jetskis would often later be found missing their engine, because those engines were also excellent for use in larger UAVs. They must also have semiconductor routes too.

Perhaps Prigozhin and the Wagner leaders that marched on Russia are still around due to Africa.

Since 2018, Wagner has been operating in a number of African countries, including the Central African Republic (CAR), Libya and Mali.

On Monday, the CAR’s presidency said dozens of Wagner fighters had arrived to help secure a constitutional referendum on July 30.
""
Dmitry Utkin – a former special forces officer in Russia’s GRU military intelligence, who helped found the Wagner Group – also spoke to the men.

“This is not the end. This is just the beginning of the biggest work in the world that will be carried out very soon,” Utkin said before switching to English. “And welcome to hell!”

Now there is new opportunity, greenfields.

Prigozhin praises Niger's military takeover and even pitches Wagner's services as he resurfaces in Russia

The Wagner group has had an extensive operational scope in numerous African countries including the CAR, Libya, Mali, Sudan, Mozambique and Burkina Faso, with the message coming as Putin courted leaders from Africa at a summit on Friday.

A Mi-26 military transport helicopter costs somewhere around USD $10 - $25 million.

It is operated by the Border Service of the Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia . It collided with a lighting mast at Yakutsk Airport (YKS) on July 27, 2023, while attempting to land at Yakutsk Airport.

A video of the incident shows the helicopter’s main rotor striking a lighting pole during the landing approach, resulting in damage to both the aircraft and the pole. Debris from the main rotor then caused the tail of the Mi-26 to detach from the aircraft.

Funny how I read comments from Russian officials yesterday saying these are "terrorist attacks".

Yeah, not good when it's on your land, right?

Sad, but definitely not unexpected. Ukraine has been bearing the pain of indiscriminate attacks against civilians for over a year. I'm amazed it has taken this long for them to start retaliating in kind. Sad, but definitely not unexpected.

The equivalent Russian attacks in the Ukraine aren't terrorist attacks apparently, if you listen to Russian reports. What's good for the goose is good for the gander IMO.

One thing I did consider was the Russians  could be trying to deflect/disguise these attacks from the Russian population from being part of the SMO thus downplaying the realities of what is really happening in Ukraine. A terrroist attack could be passed off as local dissindent activity rather than admitting that the residents of Moscow are no longer safe from attack from within Ukraine

The residents of Moscow appear to be relatively safe. The youtube headlines like 'panic in Russia' are overblown in the extreme. The selected targets are not random.

Correct on both counts. The residents appear to be relatively safe and the targets appear to be targetted.

However the fact that someone can be seen to hit targets in Moscow with apparent impunity must be just a tad unsettling for the local residents. One can never be sure that one of the drones misses its target or gets shot down on your house.

Or use them as an excuse to carpet bomb Kyiv.

I have become convinced by developments in Ukraine and elsewhere that we are headed into a major international war involving the east and west. I can't say if it will be a full-blown world war, or a nuclear one, but it will be a very substantial conflict that has life-changing effects on us all. What makes me think this is the escalation between Russia and Ukraine, the movement of Wagner forces to the Polish border, the increasing militarism of China and North Korea, the new military pacts like AUKUS, New Zealand's own defence reprioritisation, all the rich foreigners buying up boltholes here and many other big and small things going on around the globe. To anyone with even a passing familiarity with 20th century history, all of this seems awfully familiar. If you have any land available, you might want to start a Victory garden on it.

I mean, you can see how easily that can happen when there is so little room to manoeuvre.
