The Washington Post - Huge hack reveals embarrassing details of who’s behind Proud Boys and other far-right websites
breaking
Epik long has been the favorite Internet company of the far-right, providing domain services to QAnon theorists, Proud Boys and other instigators of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol - allowing them to broadcast hateful messages from behind a veil of anonymity.
But that veil abruptly vanished last week when a huge breach by the hacker group Anonymous dumped into public view more than 150 gigabytes of previously private data ...
The files include years of website purchase records, internal company emails and customer account credentials revealing who administers some of the biggest far-right websites.
The data includes client names, home addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and passwords left in plain, readable text.
The hack even exposed the personal records from Anonymize, a privacy service Epik offered to customers wanting to conceal their identity. ...

The New York Times - Trump Campaign Knew Lawyers’ Voting Machine Claims Were Baseless, Memo Shows
today
Two weeks after the 2020 election, a team of lawyers closely allied with Donald J. Trump held a widely watched news conference at the Republican Party’s headquarters in Washington.
At the event, they laid out a bizarre conspiracy theory claiming that a voting machine company had worked with an election software firm, the financier George Soros and Venezuela to steal the presidential contest from Mr. Trump.
But there was a problem for the Trump team, according to court documents released on Monday evening.
By the time the news conference occurred on Nov. 19, Mr. Trump’s campaign had already prepared an internal memo on many of the outlandish claims about the company, Dominion Voting Systems, and the separate software company, Smartmatic.
The memo had determined that those allegations were untrue. ...
It found:
- That Dominion did not use voting technology from the software company, Smartmatic, in the 2020 election.
- That Dominion had no direct ties to Venezuela or to Mr. Soros.
- And that there was no evidence that Dominion’s leadership had connections to left-wing “antifa” activists, as Ms. Powell and others had claimed.

I wonder what happened to that memo. I think Rudy and that Sydney idiot (as well as Lin-thingo) got into Trump's ear about election fraud, told him he wanted to hear, and just left him to it.

For me it was the "wait... Julian Bashir? [pause] Oh, right".
I think this'd be useful for the anti-vaxxer DYOR crowd, "I have done my own research" and then forward them a copy. They'll probably believe it's real given all the other stuff they swallow.

The important thing about this isn't so much that they knew the claims were baseless, which anyone but the Retrumplicans would be aware of, but that they're being sued for libel (under the general class of defamation) and this seems to be solid proof that they knew what they were saying was libellous. I think under US law, which is relatively weak compared to Europe (meaning more protective of First Amendment rights), you also need to show that the statements were malicious, which may be trickier to do.

I think Arnie's response would be more apropos here (NSFW so posted as a link rather than inline video).
The Washington Post - Trump sues New York Times and niece Mary Trump over tax records story
today
Former president Donald Trump has sued his niece, Mary L. Trump, and the New York Times over the publication of a 2018 article detailing allegations that he “participated in dubious tax schemes … including instances of outright fraud” that allowed him to receive over $413 million from his father, Fred Trump Sr., while significantly reducing taxes.
The suit, filed in a N.Y. court on Tuesday, alleges that Mary Trump, the New York Times and at least three of its reporters “engaged in an insidious plot to obtain confidential and highly-sensitive records” about the former president’s finances.
According to the lawsuit, Donald Trump suffered at least $100 million in damages as a result of the alleged actions.* ...
A spokeswoman for the Times said that the paper’s coverage of Donald Trump’s taxes “helped inform citizens through meticulous reporting on a subject of overriding public interest. This lawsuit is an attempt to silence independent news organizations, and we plan to vigorously defend against it.” ...

neb:quickymart:Saw a good publication on this linked from a tech forum... ah, this. Check out the doctors' names.
It frustrates me all these people who are told by doctors (for example) who have studied medicine for, oh, I dunno, all their lives that the coronavirus vaccine is safe, but they listen to Frank (or whoever) who has 40 followers on his Youtube channel and 18 friends on Facebook and has "done the research" and has suddenly determined that "it's not safe, take horse dewormer or bleach instead". They listen to Frank because he tells them what they want to hear - which isn't the facts.
Thanks, I needed a good LOL.
