And CNN broadcasts a program with this ticker: "Alt-right founder questions if jews are people".

If this is not &*^$ed up, there isn't anything else.

Are you taking greater issue with the Alt-right founder's assertions, or the fact it was put on the ticker?

Pretty sure they have freedom of speech to say what they like, don't they?

Right, and so in case it's not clear I do not agree with Alt-Rights assertions, but the fact that CNN put it on it's ticker as news, seems ok to me, it's about the only way I'd know he had said such a thing. I don't think CNN are agreeing with him or anything? Am I missing something?

The fact this is going mainstream means there's a substantial number of idiots around sponsoring this kind of thoughts.

Ah ok, so you are taking exception to the fact it was said by this half-wit, and that you came to know he said it via the ticker on the CNN program? If that's the case I entirely agree with you.

In the USA the courts have thus far protected the right to all forms of free speech except where they promote imminent violence.

I also don't believe freedom of speech should extend to hate speech.

In NZ hate speech is illegal.  In the US it's constitutional right.

I've always though the US penny-wise and pound-foolish with freedom.

I think this kind of thing is one of the unintended consequences of the Internet and social media. Suddenly every poisonous toad in the world has a global platform for spewing noxious venom. Giving these creatures a voice draws them out from under their rocks. The problem is that because they have a voice, their ugly thoughts are becoming normalised. Boundaries are shifting and stuff that once would not be tolerated by anyone with a shred of decency or self-respect is now making it to the mainstream. I don't know how much this has to do with the election of Trump giving it a veneer of legitimacy but something does seem to have changed. It doesn't bode well for the future.

Tricky one. Banning people from saying things in public does not stop them thinking them or saying them in private. I have heard many things said by 'ordinary Kiwis' who live outside the metropolitan bubble that would curl the hair on some of the delicate flowers I have seen in the media etc.

Driving views underground could be said to be more dangerous than allowing them to be aired in public.

http://www.news.com.au/finance/work/leaders/presidentelect-donald-trump-could-be-impeached-over-his-hotel-soiree-with-foreign-diplomats-legal-experts-say/news-story/27453853c23e85f9241ee06ce1f569a5

A Harvard Law professor says President-elect Donald Trump could be impeached the moment he takes office over comments made to foreign diplomats. During a gathering at his new, spare-no-expense hotel in Washington DC, Mr Trump wined and dined visiting officials in the opulence of the hotel’s Lincoln Library, a junior ballroom with 16-foot ceilings and velvet drapes.

Ethical concerns were raised after a number of delegates admitted they would be tempted to stay at the hotel when visiting the US capital, in a bid to curry favour with the President.
“Believe me, all the delegations will go there,” one Middle Eastern diplomat told the Washington Post. “Why wouldn’t I stay at his hotel blocks from the White House, so I can tell the new president, ‘I love your new hotel!’ Isn’t it rude to come to his city and say, ‘I am staying at your competitor?’” said another.

At the end it says it is highly unlikely to happen unless the republicans who control the Senate and the House really wants to do so.

At the rate he is going, I think there will be lots of things he can be impeached for by the time he takes office. Whether that happens is another matter.

He won't be impeached, at least for some time as the GOP control both houses and so unless they have a death wish, they won't allow it.

Unless he changes he will be impeached, and at 70 years old he wont change now.

I predict impeachment to begin around the end of his first year. By then he will be quite bored with the job and sick of pandering to the rules/systems that come with the office. As one of the most selfish billionaires in the US he will start drifting back to his personal business. I dont believe this man has ever done anything for the benefit of others.
