Fred99:

There were many tens of thousands of NZers returning.  There was nowhere to put them "locked up" / quarantined isolated from the public and isolated from each other for weeks.

I have no idea about the SDHB and contact tracing, they seemed to be playing catch-up.  Presumably mainly young and typically mobile/social people and probably the same as for the St Patrick's day party in Matamata.  ~80 cases from one index case.  That's why we've got lock-down, and so far it's working, both in reduction of new imported cases and containment of clusters.

The government is doing a very good job and is well led by the PM and DG of Health.  Other politicians - maybe not so much, two dreadful examples of people being dickheads from both main parties.

Nowhere have I said they needed to be locked up or quarantined, I talked about monitoring and enforcement of self isolation which I think has been inadequate.

There was one instance locally, and I'm sure it's not an isolated case, where someone who had just returned from overseas was out and about proudly proclaiming they were not going to self isolate. Right from day one there should have been heavy penalties for such people. What did we have at that time? Absolutely nothing.

I think the PM is just following along. I haven't seen anything from her that resembles true leadership unless you consider making the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy essential is showing leadership.

I see Peters wants to delay the election ... a bit like the turkey wanting to delay thanksgiving I suppose.

He isn't the only turkey. Simon Bridges also wants a delay. Voters at election time are going to tell him exactly what they think of his 'I am special' stance regarding lockdown. As far as I know he has been doing a decent job in his role but his weekly drives and lame justifications are what people will remember.

I think a delay for the election makes a tremendous amount of sense.

I think Simon Bridges has every right to drive as he has been doing. Unlike some other politicians it would appear he doesn't have a family home in Wellington. I don't think his excuses were particularly clever however but I would consider he is in an essential role and his driving is acceptable.

Slagging him for his piss weak excuses is fair enough, but to criticise him for driving to undertake his role is unfair.

To give similar example, I could be expected to go to work to undertake an essential service. It would take me about 1 hour 30 to drive to work, for some of my colleagues it could take 3 hours. Is this materially any different to what Simon Bridges is doing?

I've got every right to drive to my local supermarket to buy a fresh loaf of bread every time I feel like eating a sandwich made with crust-end slices.

He should be using Zoom / teleconferencing.  He's being very very stupid.

Voters at election time might have strong opinions on the government's lack of delivery and bumbling, possibly corrupt coalition partners as well. The Covid-19 crisis doesn't mean that stuff didn't happen.

I find projecting your personal opinions as the will of the great unwashed masses to be a tad presumptive.

Perhaps she is but the irony is that you are doing exactly the same thing. In her defence, given that the government's approach towards COVID-19 has received broad-ranging support from the citizenry (as evidenced by opinion polls), presumably the public is at least similarly receptive to the biggest underlying public health message in the government's approach: stay at home where possible. So yeah at least her projection upon the great unwashed seems to be on more solid grounds than yours.

And it's becoming absolutely abundantly clear to anyone with not the thickest blinders on that it was possible for one particular dickhead to stay at home and do his job. Whether he could get away with driving under the COVID-19 legal framework shouldn't be the sole question: during times like these when everyone is making a sacrifice, why can't then public ask him to give up his moments of "fame" in person. The law is a floor not as ceiling when it comes to the standards that people expect of each other.

And this part is personal and a matter of taste: I'd venture that few would find hearing from Bridges in person, with his constant mumbling and mouth-full-of-food-esque articulation and cadences, to be a pleasant experience. But perhaps for the die hard true believers, it's like heavenly music. Good for them - LOL.

I am expressing my opinion, as everyone here is entitled to do. My opinion is that Simon Bridges is a turkey, and for all the bumbling and 'possible corruption' of this government, voters will overwhelmingly choose to re-elect it, because the alternative is so much worse.

Forgive me for pointing out that if people had applied half this level of scrutiny to the Government's failure to deliver on its own promises and deadlines, it would not be unreasonable to be unsatisfied with their performance up until now.

But sure, let's only elect people who sound like stiff-upper-lip white newsreaders from the 1950s who have been  to private finishing schools. That will surely do wonders for representation - unless you only believe in that sort of thing up to the point where it gives you a platform to launch blisteringly personal attacks on people for the way they talk, and then all bets are off.

Bumbling? I think we are watching different press conferences. Are you sure you aren't watching Trump on Fox?

I would not attack Simon Bridges or anyone else for the way they talk, except in a satirical context where caricature is clearly allowed, but I think it is legitimate to say that his manner of speaking does not have an inspirational effect on people. It is not just his pronunciation, but the way he expresses himself. I have compared him to the Red Dwarf despair squid and stated that he has the kind of personality that can kill a party just by entering the room. Having never been to a party when he entered, I don't know if that is actually true or not. It is just the impression his media appearances leave me with.

I'd suggest that if those 601 people had read this article prior to answering that poll the results would have been very different.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/120912415/coronavirus-how-tindall-morgan-and-fyfe-worked-to-ready-country-for-covid19-fight

It would seem where we are today in our readiness to respond was't exactly due to the governments actions.

There was also the headline behind the NZHerald paywall where Shamubeel Eaqub said we needed some adults in the room with respect to  the governments Covid-19 response.

The leadership in this government is very much lacking. They are sleep walking their way to possible success and certainly don't deserve to be re-elected on current efforts.

On your first point - maybe you're right. But it still doesn't change the fact that when you were taking a potshot at @Rikkitic for projecting her opinion, you were doing the exact same thing.

On the second point - my issue with the way he speaks is that it fundamentally gets in the way of understanding him and is a massive sign of laziness. The latter grates especially when this relates to someone who never spares a moment in telling us how hard he works and how important his job is. It's hard to believe that someone who went to Oxford can't take a bit more effort to enunciate his worlds more carefully and to not have his intonation almost consistently match the underlying nature of much of his critiques of the government, i.e. whining. You don't have to speak like a pretentious wannabe-"upper class" egg to be clear.

Again, whatever floats your boat. Your political perspectives are basically fixed and well-known here.

I'd suggest based on recent events he would be very stupid to use Zoom.
