Can't disagree with your comments about Peters and New Zealand First. Because of Peters they have the most to lose. Someone else mentioned corruption in an earlier post, I refrained from commenting then, in my opinion Winston Peters is the most untrustworthy politician we have. The sooner he has no influence in the running of this country the better.

That's a brave statement in a public forum. Are you able to provide citation to proven corruption?

Perhaps it is. I think it's a fair bet there's plenty of other untrustworthiness of varying degrees in the halls of power, so he's not on his own. I've just said I think he's at the top of the list.

Have a read of this article and then tell me if you don't think there's a strong smell.

I think you really need to be careful with these sorts of lazy allegations. You started by calling WP the most corrupt politician "we have" (presumably in NZ). The "evidence" you have provided for this view is an article detailing a lot of concerning allegations of unseemly links between the NZF Foundation and the fisheries industry -- there are lots of things that I don't like about what has been alleged in that article but, as per your own words ("strong smell"), these remain allegations only.

I personally couldn't care less what happens to you but these sorts of posts exposes the owner of the forum to a certain degree of legal and reputational risks. Perhaps be a bit more restrained?

NZF Foundation under investigation by SFO

There's actually a competent body investigating the allegations against the NZF Foundation. The right thing to do is to let it do its job and refrain from making unwarranted comments.

And this is coming from someone who intensely dislike NZF and WP.

Fair comment. I have modified my posts so as to remove any exposure to the forum.

I think a delay for the election makes a tremendous amount of sense.

In all seriousness I agree.

But ... Peters and NZ First have more to lose than anyone.  They are in all likelihood toast if we go to the polls.  He has the least credibility of anyone in govt, on this issue.

Below is with the proviso that NZ emerges from lockdown and it is safe to hold the election.

From a partisan political perspective Labour will want to hold the election as soon as possible, for the same reason National and the minor parties would prefer to delay it. In an election held today a Labour coalition would be very likely to win a strong majority

Rather than re-open thread after thread, and seeing as  this is technically about the current Govt, I was wondering what everyone's reaction to The Budget is?

I'm not sure there's enough detail to draw any actual conclusions yet - lots of ear-marked spending amounts yet to be announced at the moment.

So far I'd say no one is happy - more money for race horses than students but no new taxes or increases, while there's no meaningful increases to benefits and the wage subsidy scheme extension requires you to still be 50% down on revenue for the month ending 10 June at the earliest (I'd suggest most will have shut their doors by then if they're still 50% down that far after a full lock-down).

So yea, I guess if no one is happy, then it's probably pretty inoffensive? But some more detail would be nice to draw detailed conclusions.

One thing that struck me is that TV 1 immediately turned to economist Cameron Bagrie for commentary, who duly responded with a purely political propaganda spiel that could have been written by the National Party. Maybe it was, because Simon Bridges used nearly identical language to criticise the budget in Parliament. Not exactly a balanced or unbiased item from what is supposed to pass for a neutral news source.

Are they meant to deliberately seek out someone who is going to praise the Government/Budget? If someone is being presented as independent and they aren't, then that's a problem.

Agree, but while the commentary provided may have been 'independent', it left me with the impression of being more of a hatchet job than an analysis. Admittedly I didn't watch it all so maybe it became much more illuminating after I tuned out. What I did see was just a repetitive rant about throwing money around and not having a plan, which amusingly enough, was almost identical to what I saw Simon Bridges saying in Parliament. I guess that means it must be true!

Well maybe Winston Peters has his uses, he did drop this tidbit about what was going on inside the lock down decision.

Coronavirus NZ podcast: Winston Peters says China didn't want NZ to go into lock-down.
https://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/coronavirus/121511076/coronavirus-nz-podcast-winston-peters-says-china-didnt-want-nz-to-go-into-lockdown

I suppose with all the public comments about students fro the embassy this is probably not a surprise.

This is something that was reported at the time, and also WHO were advising against border closure - we went against it and did what was needed.

Crazy to have China saying "don't lock down" to other nations when they were welding the doors closed to keep people in apartment buildings and locked down an entire city - then Hubei province.  Yet at the same time, there was plenty of information coming out of China warning how bad the disease was.  It could be Hanlon's Razor - different departments of the CCP heading in opposite directions to pursue their particular goals - so optimistically it may have just been very crappy leadership.
