The Washington Post - The 5-Minute Fix - How will Trump respond to his subpoena?
today
Donald Trump received a bit of mail today: a subpoena.
The committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol is asking the former president to provide specific documents by Nov. 4 and testify under oath by mid-November.
So what happens next?
A few possibilities:
1. Trump could comply with the subpoena and appear before the panel. (In that case, get ready for some good, or bad, TV, depending on how you look at it.)
2. He could disregard the subpoena, in which case the panel could ask the Justice Department to criminally charge him with contempt of Congress.
3. Trump could challenge the subpoena in court. But he already lost a similar legal battle when he tried to prevent the committee from obtaining his records leading up to Jan. 6, 2021.
Any legal battle could carry on for months, and the issue could dissolve quickly if Republicans win the House and disband the Jan. 6 committee.
