The Washington Post - The 5-Minute Fix - How will Trump respond to his subpoena?

today

Donald Trump received a bit of mail today: a subpoena.

The committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol is asking the former president to provide specific documents by Nov. 4 and testify under oath by mid-November.

So what happens next?

 A few possibilities:

1. Trump could comply with the subpoena and appear before the panel. (In that case, get ready for some good, or bad, TV, depending on how you look at it.)

2. He could disregard the subpoena, in which case the panel could ask the Justice Department to criminally charge him with contempt of Congress.

3. Trump could challenge the subpoena in court. But he already lost a similar legal battle when he tried to prevent the committee from obtaining his records leading up to Jan. 6, 2021.

Any legal battle could carry on for months, and the issue could dissolve quickly if Republicans win the House and disband the Jan. 6 committee.

Trump is a festering sore that's poisoning America's lifeblood. The boil needs pricking. Or, vice versa.

Trump crowned? No faux King way!

The Washington Post - Mar-a-Lago classified papers held U.S. secrets about Iran and China

21 October 2022

Some of the classified documents recovered by the FBI from Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home and private club included highly sensitive intelligence regarding Iran and China ...

At least one of the documents seized by the FBI describes Iran’s missile program ...

Other documents described highly sensitive intelligence work aimed at China ...

The classified documents about Iran and China are considered among the most sensitive the FBI has recovered to date in its investigation of Trump and his aides for possible mishandling of classified information, obstruction and destruction of government records ...

538 says Republicans will probably take the House but the Democrats will keep the Senate:

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2022-election-forecast/house/?cid=rrpromo

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2022-election-forecast/senate/?cid=rrpromo

Personally I'd like to see them hang onto both to get stuff done, but it's not up to me.

Summary: in American slang, the GOP has really screwed the pooch.

In 1781, the US senate was created. It was a badly flawed compromise driven by rural land-owning conservative rich US founding fathers that did not trust to the common rabble.

They insisted one chamber of the US congress have 2 representatives, senators, per state. In other words they gave disproportionate power to lightly populated rural states. An example: Wyoming has the same number of senators as California, with less than 2% of the population.

I guess because the Republicans have really screwed up with Trump and the Supreme Court ruling over abortion, for the GOP to lose control of possible the senate.

If something could be done about Mitch McConnell....

There's only one trombone piece that's right for Trump and that's this one.

Some fact-checking on Trump's response to the January 6 panel (a concept quite foreign to him):

A look at why a seemingly-endless array of lawyers and advisers are willing to throw themselves under the bus for Trump (something I've always wondered about too).

The best justice money can buy. The US only has to deal with Supreme court justice Thomas potentially another 25 years. He's 74 years old.

Another sad statement of US Justice is Republican Senator Graham chaired the Senate Committee on the Judiciary from 2019 to 2021.

Reuters: U.S. Supreme Court's Thomas temporarily blocks Graham election case testimony

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on Monday temporarily blocked a judge's order requiring Senator Lindsey Graham to testify to a grand jury in Georgia in a criminal investigation into whether then-President Donald Trump and his allies unlawfully tried to overturn 2020 election results in the state.

Thomas put the case on hold pending further action either from the justice or the full Supreme Court on a request by Graham, a Republican from South Carolina and Trump ally, to halt the order for testimony. Graham filed the emergency application to the Supreme Court on Friday after a federal appeals court denied his request to block the questioning.

Graham has argued that his position as a senator provides him immunity under the U.S. Constitution's "speech or debate" clause from having to answer questions related to his actions as part of the legislative process.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has subpoenaed Graham to answer questions about phone calls he made to a senior Georgia election official in the weeks after the November 2020 election.
