The gutter is increasingly crowded with votes to be won.
Though long ago.
There was a newspaper that found listing all the divorce cases was a good earner.

Winston has done some good things, but tally of far less worthy keeps growing.

I suppose some people don't age gracefully, and take the opportunity to be the worst person they always wanted to be, as time is running short for revenge ?

He was once destined for greatness quite early in politics as a future potential Prime Minister.
Maybe he is getting haughtier and haughtier as missing this burns him as he reaches sunset years?

Others recognize media have to ask hard questions and take it on the chin,
where Winston's ego seems to be made of glass.

What we may have thought years ago was an instinct for what was right.
Just him tail coating on what he saw as populist at the time ?

We seem to be at a point in Politics where being vile is acceptable to a very loyal base.
Their Evangelism only exceeded by ability to throw the first stone, never turn a cheek and never be a good Samaritan.

Peters went off at the C word incident, and apparently the dress code in Parliament. But its apparently ok if he plays gutter politics...

Reminds me of those American televangelists, whose mantra is basically "Jesus loves me...but I'm not so sure about you..."

That's quitter talk; worse, it's failing talk, because you can't opt out, you're here with several million other people, and if their lives are miserable they'll sure as hell make yours miserable too.

For those of us with highly transferable skills opting out is absolutely an option. I’d like to return to New Zealand at some point but with this type of approach I won’t bother. I’ll have to give up too much for it to be a viable choice.

It’s a big world out there and there is competition to attract people with skills. Policy settings that make it very unattractive for people with skills will make the economy, and therefore the amount of money available to tax, worse, not better.

I can absolutely opt out, earn more and have a better lifestyle elsewhere. Many of the people the Green tax plan will be relying on (seemingly concentrating even more of the tax burden on even fewer taxpayers) can. Are you going to take my passport away from me?

I don't think the threats of violence from segments on the community that I'm expected to chip in even more to underwrite is going to generate much buy-in, especially when that's going to come at the expense of my own family's lifestyle and opportunities.

It does somewhat suggest some sort of 'divine right' to the tax dollars I contribute to the state, much like the idea of taxing inheritances involves the state creating a presumptive right to someone's property. It's a pretty crappy way to treat the people your country actually needs the most to make your plan work.

It’s pretty much all magical thinking anyway. The greens tax policy has as much chance of being implemented as ACTs social policies. It’s just posturing to keep their base happy and will be swiftly abandoned if they actually get into power.

@handle9 @GV27 - you can opt out of New Zealand, but you can't opt out of society. Wherever you go, you'll be paying for the society you live in.

Sure. If you want your society to be just those who can't leave then the green policies are a great way to go about it.

Swarbrick was extremely unconvincing on Q&A. She can't answer basic questions on their policy. As soon as anything gets specific she's waffling.

It was a poor performance.

As can the doctors, nurses and dentists the Greens are going to have to magic up to make any of those benefits materialise.

Whether people want to accept it or not, what you actually have to get by matters to 'high' earners too. The fact that their contribution to the tax pool is both disproportionate and taken for granted is lost on people who support this kind of tax reform.

They don’t know. Tame asked Swarbrick that exact question about dentists and it was clear from her answer that it’s a “vision” not a plan. They know they will never implement it so it’s just about vibes to con voters.

It’s a variation on a theme of Winstons race baiting or ACT courting the gun nuts.

Wow… if you think that’s bad then perhaps you should watch the ones with Luxon? And to think this is the prime minister.

At-least Swarbrick can answer many questions without saying “what I would say to you” and deflecting…

I'll leave that up to you true believers. I'm far too cynical to believe in fairy stories.
