Things going from bad to worse for George Santos.
Trouble in Trumpland:
The NY Times - McCarthy Fails in First Vote on Speaker
breaking
WASHINGTON - Representative Kevin McCarthy of California lost his first vote for speaker on Tuesday and was in a pitched battle for the top job in the House, amid a rebellion among hard-right lawmakers that left the post up for grabs and prompted a historic struggle on the floor at the dawn of the new Republican majority.
The Republican mutiny, waged by ultra conservative lawmakers who for weeks have held fast to their vow to oppose Mr. McCarthy, dealt a serious blow to the G.O.P. leader and laid bare deep divisions that threaten to make the party’s majority ungovernable.
But it did not end the California Republican’s bid for speaker, which he has vowed to continue, forcing multiple votes if necessary until he wins the top post. ...
What was supposed to be a day of jubilation for Republicans instead devolved into a chaotic display of disunity within the party is as it embarks on its first week in power in the House.
(The last time this happened was in 1923 - for first time in a century, leadership will be determined by subsequent balloting.)

So what happens now? What if he simply can't get enough votes? I would be quite amused if Hakeem (the new Democratic guy) became the Speaker. Republicans wouldn't know what to do with themselves.

This is going to be interesting! Kevin must not be as loved by everyone as he thinks he is.
Note numbers are updating in realtime on CNN's page - 55 for Jeffries and 44 McCarthy as I write this.
Nope, McCarthy loses the second time around. Onto the third ballot now...
Also (from CNN):
Republicans are hearing from GOP donors and constituents that the party "looks stupid"
A GOP lawmaker who is supporting House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy says members are already hearing from Republican donors and constituents who think the party “looks stupid” for not being able to elect a speaker.
Another Republican who is backing McCarthy predicted there will be pressure after three or four rounds of votes to either adjourn or start thinking about another strategy.
As the vote drags on, a third Republican and McCarthy supporter described the frustration with the opposition within the party:
"“They are embarrassing the whole team. We should form a parking lot committee and put them on it.”"
While many Republicans predicted it would go to multiple ballots, many are still in disbelief, and angry over how the drama is overshadowing their new majority.
I thought they looked pretty stupid before all this happened anyway! 😀

Maybe I should say they look and they are? 😃
How many rounds is this voting circus going to go on for, I wonder? Trump must be...well...how does he feel about all this?

McCarthy has just lost a third round. The House has voted to adjourn until Wednesday.
The last time a candidate for speaker failed to secure the necessary votes on the first round of ballots occurred in 1923.
It took nine ballots and several days to select a speaker.

Wow, Kevin must be feeling pretty sad right now. Fully deserved, of course.
Speaking of George Santos...is silence the best defense? I suspect not. It's one thing to ignore a reporter asking you a hard question, but what about if a voter asks him?
The last time something like this happened, it was followed by a civil war.

This is definitely a war - just not particularly civil.

"We'll keep re-running the vote over and over and over and over, as many times as it takes to get the result we want".
Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz, one of Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy's most vocal GOP critics, has written to the architect of the Capitol to inquire about why it is that McCarthy is allowed to occupy the speaker's office, since he has not won the office.
In a letter dated Jan. 3, Gaetz wrote to Architect of the Capitol J. Brett Blanton, "What is the basis in law, House rule, or precedent to allow someone who has placed second in three successive speaker elections to occupy the Speaker of the House Office? How long will he remain there before he is considered a squatter?" He asked Blanton for a speedy response, since "it seems Mr. McCarthy can no longer be considered Speaker-Designate following today's balloting."

MCCARTHY SAYS HE WON'T DROP OUT OF RACE FOR SPEAKER
Rep. Kevin McCarthy said late Tuesday there is no scenario under which he will drop out of the race for House speaker.
“It's not going to happen,” McCarthy said....saying he only needed "11 more votes to win,”...
Hmm. Where have we heard that before?
