MCCARTHY SAYS HE WON'T DROP OUT OF RACE FOR SPEAKER
Rep. Kevin McCarthy said late Tuesday there is no scenario under which he will drop out of the race for House speaker.

“It's not going to happen,” McCarthy said....saying he only needed "11 more votes to win,”...

Hmm. Where have we heard that before?

Over at Breitbart they've got screaming red headlines about the whole debacle - as well as calling Jeffries an "election denier". Um, okay, righto 🙄

Twitter is Going Great!: Twitter now willing to take money from political campaigns

In the face of plummeting ad revenue, Twitter announced today via a tweet from its Safety account that it will be "relaxing our ads policy for cause-based ads in the US. We also plan to expand the political advertising we permit in the coming weeks."

...It is unclear how Twitter will respond to causes related to political hoaxes such as Pizzagate or QAnon. "We'll share more details as this work progresses," added the Twitter Safety account, cryptically.

Trump throws McCarthy to the wolves ...

The Washington Examiner - MCCARTHY ENDS FIRST DAY OF SPEAKER’S ELECTION ON SHAKY GROUND

04 Jan 2023

"Former President Trump declined to say if he's sticking by his endorsement of Kevin McCarthy for speaker tonight, telling me in a brief phone interview he's had calls all day asking for support, and 'We'll see what happens. We'll see how it all works out,'" NBC News correspondent Garrett Haake tweeted.

What is the hold outs endgame?

Their nominees haven't exactly got many votes. I don't see them getting another nominee who will get past the finish post.

While the 19 or 20 or so hold outs think they have the balance of power I reckon there's a better than even chance the Democrats could pull back some of their votes to reduce the numbers McCarthy needs. The hold outs efforts will have been in vain. If they're smart the hold outs will get in behind McCarthy.

Some interesting analysis from CNN here: https://edition.cnn.com/2023/01/04/politics/republican-speaker-chaos-analysis/index.html

This point stuck out to me:

Even if McCarthy prevails, he will be a weak speaker who may be in office but barely in power. The Californian had weeks to get his majority together. Either he inaccurately counted the votes or has no control over his conference. Neither scenario is likely to lead to a majority that effectively trains its fire on Democrats and the White House and can build a strong case for voters for the 2024 election. If Republicans can’t unite on an easy vote – for speaker – how will they come together on tough ones, on government spending bills, for example?

It looks like McCarthy once again doesn’t have the votes. There was no change in the count from the fourth and fifth ballot.

The Washington Post - When the House needed two months and 133 votes to elect a speaker

30 Dec 2022

For the first time in exactly 100 years, the U.S. House of Representatives [has needed] more than one round of voting to elect a speaker.

But a few extra rounds of balloting would be a far cry from the nearly two months and 133 votes the House took to choose its leader in 1856 - the longest and most contentious speaker election in its history.

The race pitted antislavery Rep. Nathaniel “Bobbin Boy” Banks, a member of the nativist American Party from Massachusetts, against candidates who were open to expanding slavery to new states and territories.

The debate raged on amid mounting violence between proslavery and antislavery settlers in “Bleeding Kansas.”

Things were a bit different back then though, now things are different (in a different way) - if that makes sense.

The Washington Post - Majority Republicans, in turmoil, unable to elect House speaker as McCarthy fails again

breaking

Today, majority Republicans, in turmoil, were unable to elect a House speaker as GOP nominee Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) failed on the sixth ballot.

Republican foes have kept him from getting close to a majority in the latest round of voting for speaker that has now stretched over two days.

Republican Lauren Boebert (Colo.) said former president Donald Trump called the defectors to tell them “they need to knock this off.”

Boebert, among 20 Republicans who voted for Republican Byron Donalds (Fla.) in the fifth and sixth rounds, said Trump should do the opposite - call McCarthy, tell him he lacks the votes and should withdraw.

EDIT:   Imagine if this impasse was occurring in a presidential inaugural year. 😕😕😕

I have very mixed feelings about this. I loathe McCarthy for being the valueless manipulative unprincipled hollow two-faced politician he is, but I can't help feeling a twinge of sympathy, however undeserved, for him in this photo as he watches his dreams come crashing down. This image really is a study in defeat. He must be experiencing excruciating agony as he sees his career go up in flames. I do not enjoy his pain and yes, I feel a little sorry for him. I would feel more sorry for him if he hadn't gone crawling up Trump's backside.

My take on it: he made his bed, he can lie in it - along with Trump.

I hear what you're saying Rikki - but sorry, he doesn't get any sympathy out of me. His little trek to Maralago to see Trump right after the January 6 riots - apparently because he was "in the neighbourhood" turned me off the guy completely.

The Washington Post -  Opinion - The House speaker election is so embarrassing   (condensed)

04 Jan 2023

Wow, this is embarrassing!

No, not the once-in-a-century mess around electing a speaker of the House ...

What’s embarrassing is that you were expecting anything else.

Honestly, we are a little confused you are taking this so poorly.

This is like electing a bunch of clowns to office and being disappointed when they put on a magnificent clown show for you.

Here is precisely the clown show you ordered! You shouldn’t be ashamed. You should be applauding. ...

I’m sorry, what did you think you were getting? ...

Our party is always yelling that Washington is a broken, dysfunctional mess.

What is embarrassing is that you thought we meant we were going to govern to change that.

What is embarrassing is that you thought we were going to govern at all.

Plan B.  Destroy democracy and own the libs.
