I thought that was Plans B through to Z? 😃

Seriously though - like that bloke on CNN said - if they can't do something straightforward like elect a speaker, how the hell are they going to pass difficult laws? Is this bunch of 20-odd Trump-fanboys (and girls) going to hold the rest of the Republican House to ransom for as long as they can?

How is this governing?

It isn't supposed to be governing. The strategy is to create chaos until everything jams up so they can bring in a strong man to fix it. Coup d'état 101.

The Washington Post - Analysis: House Republicans’ dysfunction points to more chaos ahead

05 Jan 23

What has been on display is a perfect storm of misjudgment and anti-institutionalism.

The failure of House Republicans to properly assess the political climate in the 2022 midterm elections left them with a narrow majority rather than the “red wave” margin they expected.

That empowered the band of rebels, whose sole objective appears simply to be to blow up both the party and Congress for their own gain. ...

When a new speaker is chosen - Kevin McCarthy or someone else - that person will enter the office weakened and compromised, presiding over a majority that is not just fragile but also highly volatile.

This is a dangerous combination not just for the party but for the country.

The power of the Freedom Caucus rebels, who have demonstrated an insatiable appetite to claim power and extract concessions, means that even the most basic but essential functions of Congress will be difficult to achieve.

I don't know why no-one will listen but I keep saying the way out of this, both there and here, is to abandon party politics. Even now there are still good people on both sides. Let the Democrats and those Republicans still in possession of their moral compass join together and the frothing extremists can be left to chew their own tails. A Democrat/Republican coalition has a working majority and can get the things done they agree on, which would be more than most think.

Interesting story about the tricks used by the Satanic Temple to oppose far-right religious fundamentalism in the US, in particular their practice of using religious belief to claim laws don't apply to them. Their best-known one was demanding that the state government put up a statue of Baphomet next to the Ten Commandments they were also putting up because freedom of religion is for everyone, not just the particular religion you want.

Anyway, they have a few fundamental tenets of their official government-recognised religion, one of which is "One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone". Therefore everyone is entitled to a Satanic Temple religious abortion ritual, and so laws banning abortion are an infringement of their religious rights. They already have lawsuits filed in multiple states.

(For people about to get upset about the name, they don't actually worship Satan, eat babies, or anything similar).

It's quite illuminating watching the live coverage from the house. Because there is no speaker, the C-SPAN cameras can film anything and nobody can stop them. Sometimes I think CNN should get a lip reader in to gain more insight into what is going on in some of the conversations :-)

Sorry if I'm insulting anyone's intelligence.

The Gadsden "don't tread on me" flag has an interesting history, starting around the decade1770's and leading to a dark present.

New Yorker: The shifting symbolism of the Gadsden flag

In January of 2014, an African-American maintenance mechanic for the United States Postal Service in Denver filed a complaint charging that he had been subjected to racial discrimination. Specifically... one of the man’s co-workers “repeatedly wore a cap to work with an insignia of the Gadsden Flag.” The cap design in question involves a coiled rattlesnake over the phrase “don’t tread on me,” against a yellow background. You’ve seen it.

The Postal Service ... was ordered to investigate the matter. ... Observers of a particular ideological bent reacted with alarm or outrage: “Is the Gadsden Flag Racist?,” “Government Ruling: Wearing ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ Gadsden Flag Can Be Racist & ‘Racial Harassment,’ ” “Obama Administration: ‘Don't Tread on Me’ Clothes Are Racist,” and so on.

This IMO is what needs to happen, as the alternative isn't very attractive.

You also have to wonder who Russia might be manipulating directly or indirectly. An unstable US Congress plays into their hands. If these holdouts end up with enough influence they could derail support for Ukraine.

Partly because Americans are somewhat used to this kind of circus usually happening at appropriations bill time. This is different only because there are no appropriations bills involved. Other than that, it will be settled in a similar way, mostly within the republican party.

Here we go into round 8. Who was it - Einstein? - said the definition of madness was doing the exact same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result?
This carryon definitely isn't sane, that's for sure!
