According to Quote Investigator, the long list of possible sources includes:

Albert Einstein? Al-Anon? Narcotics Anonymous? Max Nordau? George Bernard Shaw? Samuel Beckett? George A. Kelly? Rita Mae Brown? John Larroquette? Jessie Potter? Werner Erhard?   ๐Ÿคจ

Meanwhile, back at the ranch ...

Rikkitic:

I don't know why no-one will listen but I keep saying the way out of this, both there and here, is to abandon party politics. Even now there are still good people on both sides. Let the Democrats and those Republicans still in possession of their moral compass join together.

The problem is that a fair proportion of the population would see that as a stitch up so that the 'ruling elite' could continue to feather their very comfortable nests while sitting on the downtrodden little man.

And in any case whatever they do won't stop the long term decline of the US. They went past the point of no return a while back, probably around the time of Nixon.

I thought they were doing quite well under Reagan and Clinton? Mind you I was fairly young when Reagan was running the show, and I have a feeling Clinton would have won a third term if he wanted to, he was quite popular (and their economy was doing reasonably well). Unless by "decline" you don't mean economic?

If you need a diversion from the ongoing clown show of the Speaker's election:

I bet quite a few people have questions about him too!

I'm talking about the unity of the country. Earlier in the 20th century the Dems and GOP would sit down and thrash out an agenda for a Presidents term of office with the countries best interests at heart, albeit with some horse trading reflecting what each party thought of as 'best interests'.

By the time the Clintons came to power that had all stopped and the hatred from each side for the other was entrenched.

Having economic clout can increase the rate of decay as there are more opportunities for corruption and feathering ones own nest at the expense of others, a trademark of US society.

Nixon is widely regarded as the figurehead and beneficiary of the Republican Party's 'southern turn' in part taking advantage of opposition and reaction to Kennedy's broad membership Democratic Party ending of American segregation policies. The Republican Party has managed it's new destructive tendency ever since with careful dogwhistles to garner votes while trying to prevent a breakthrough and embarrassment, until recently..

Eleven times...

The Republican leader of the House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, has failed in his latest bid to get elected speaker in a paralysis of US government not seen since the pre-Civil War era.

A cohort of right-wingers in his party derailed an 11th attempt to elect him on the third day of voting.

Republicans took over the House in November's midterm elections, but the impasse has left the chamber unable to swear in members or pass bills.

The House has adjourned until Friday.

Not since 1859, when the United States' union was fraying over the issue of slavery, has the lower chamber of Congress voted so many times to pick a speaker. Back then it took 44 rounds of ballots.

There's a good book that charts this, When America Stopped Being Great, its a good read since he traces the long run-up to Trump and Trumpism. While the US had been drifting more and more into polarisation since the 1950s, the real downfall started with Reagan breaking the PATCO strike which undid a century of progress in labour relations, and Reaganomics which began the dismantling of Depression-era safeguards on banks and big businesses doing whatever they pleased, principally privatising gains and socialising losses.

By the time Clinton came to power the relentless downhill slide was unstoppable, the polarisation just became its most visible aspect.

The NY Times - In House Speaker Fight, Trump Struggles to Play Kingmaker

05 Jan 2023

After Kevin McCarthy failed to win enough votes to become House speaker on Tuesday, former President Donald J. Trump held a call with Mr. McCarthy and Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, one of the key Republican members of Congress blocking Mr. McCarthy’s bid.

Mr. Trump’s goal was to break the logjam. But if Mr. Trump had wanted Mr. Perry to quickly flip, it wasn’t to be: The next day, Mr. Perry voted against Mr. McCarthy three more times.

At 1:15 a.m. Thursday on his social media platform, Truth Social, Mr. Trump said the turmoil was good for the process and predicted a “big Republican victory.”

But by about 7:45 p.m., Mr. McCarthy had lost 11 consecutive votes in three days, with no end to the stalemate in sight.

Mr. McCarthy’s inability to corral enough votes this week has underscored the limits of Mr. Trump’s political potency inside a party that has not controlled the Senate since 2018, lost the White House in 2020 and failed, so far, to identify the next leader of their narrow majority in the House. ...

Now, Mr. Trump’s sway over many of his own loyalists in the House has fizzled in the most public of ways ...

I knew Trump's grip would start to weaken eventually. It was just a matter of time.

At this stage I would be quite surprised if he became president again in 2024 - but I was surprised in 2016, so...
