An interesting read on Rudy Guiliani's rise as "America's mayor" to his fall as "Trump's toady" and why he doesn't care about the latter.
A New York judge said former US President Donald Trump must face a lawsuit by the state's attorney general accusing him of fraudulently overvaluing his namesake real estate company's assets and his own net worth.

Excellent news!
The NY Times - Judge Scolds Trump Legal Team and Lets James’s Lawsuit Proceed (06 Jan 23)
In a sharply worded order, the judge, Justice Arthur F. Engoron of State Supreme Court in Manhattan, denied Mr. Trump’s motion to dismiss the case, granting the attorney general, Letitia James, another victory in the matter. ...
In her suit, Ms. James says that Mr. Trump, Ivanka and his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric lied to lenders and insurers about the value of the former president’s assets. They did so, the suit says, to secure favorable loan terms and lower insurance premiums.
“The number of grossly inflated asset values is staggering, affecting most if not all of the real estate holdings in any given year,” the suit says.
Maybe The Don isn't bullet-proof, after all. 😉😉😉😉

High drama in Congress. McCarthy gave away the farm and was convinced he finally had a deal, but he has fallen short by just one vote. There was a dramatic confrontation with Gaetz, all kinds of things going on in the background, now voting to adjourn until Monday. This will cause a whole boatload of new problems. This really is historic. Nothing like it ever before.

Republicans just won vote to adjourn then reversed it at last moment. Something going on right now. Maybe last minute deal. Looks like there will be another vote tonight. All this is being carried live on CNN. Really exciting stuff. Watch it if you can.

He finally made it. 216 votes on the 15th try.

That is 5 days, 15 ballots, and a yet unknown number of concessions to get the speaker’s gavel into McCarthy’s hands.

The NY Times - Speaker Quest Reveals McCarthy’s Tenuous Grip on an Unruly Majority
today
As the Republican leader has made concessions to the far right, he has effectively agreed to give them carte blanche to disrupt the workings of the House - and to hold him hostage to their demands.
“The concessions he’s made means that it will be a minority of a minority of the minority ... that will get to dictate the outcomes of legislative achievement,” said Representative Richard E. Neal of Massachusetts, the top Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee.
“The problem is for him that, with every concession, he has to wake up every day wondering if he’s still going to have his job. Because the smallest disagreement could lead to a motion from the body to remove him from the speakership.”
I think that Gaetz got most of what he wished for.

It seems that Trump rang him to get him to change his vote.

I was watching the live coverage on CNN and MSNBC and it was fascinating. When Gaetz on the second to last ballot voted Present (like abstain) and not for McCarthy there was a scene where one of McCarthy's folks had to be physically restrained to stop him for attacking Gaetz! I guess he thought he was double-crossed. The next two years in the Congress are going to be fun to watch as the GOP spend all their time going after Biden/Fauci et al with investigations rather than actually try to govern the country.

You can see this in the video I linked to, about four minutes in.

Great television! I just wonder why CNN or MSNBC didn't go and find lip readers :-)
This article might help explain Matthew Gaetz's dislike for Kevin McCarthy: https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/sex-trafficking-row-helped-fuel-231758530.html
Also, even though Kevin won, I think he's made a tonne of concessions he really, really didn't want to, and like I said, he's now going to find it incredibly hard to get much done - the tiny minority of holdouts (mostly always-Trumpers) are going to make life very hard for him. This won't be the smooth sailing he thinks it will be.
Any predictions on how long he lasts in the role? One term only? Speaker election is every 2 years, right?
