Any predictions on how long he lasts in the role? One term only? Speaker election is every 2 years, right?

I think a more pertinent question will be "what happens when the ringleader can't ringlead?". Like a lot of the other bits of US (and indeed non-US) politics I assume this is one of those can't-happen events for which there's no provision for handling it when it does happen.

the Republicans will now try and rewrite the rules on how a Speaker is elected, like all elected?? Americans do when things don’t go their way, to satisfy and reinforce their greedy egos so as to stay in power.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

This 538 piece is a good explainer as to how he's going to have a very difficult job now.

Sideface: Article: he agreed to allow any member of the House to force a vote at will to “vacate” his speakership - essentially agreeing to be in permanent jeopardy of losing his job.

To a large extent that is normal and correct in most parliamentary systems including NZ and until recently, USA. If the speaker no longer has the confidence of the house (a majority) then the speaker may be removed by the house. As stated by 538 in the article above:

That sounds like a big change, but it’s really a reversion to how things used to be. Historically, one member has been the normal threshold to trigger a motion to vacate — it was that way until 2019, when Democrats raised it.

Should the Republican party re-brand themselves as the "Anarchist party"?

An old article:

Open Democracy UK: Anarchists and republicans: bedfellows?

Are republicans simply underdeveloped anarchists? An exploration of the relationship between two political theories and their conceptions of freedom and domination.

Republican George Santos' sister owes $40,000 in unpaid rent at apartment he listed as his address

George Santos was reportedly spotted moving his belongings into the Elmhurst apartment on Queens Boulevard in late December, but three weeks earlier, the property owners filed a motion to evict his sister for allegedly owing nearly $40,000 in unpaid rent. They claim she has not paid rent since March 2020.

The Washington Post - Opinion - To save himself, McCarthy just destroyed the House

07 Jan 23

[McCarthy's] leadership has been lacking, if not utterly absent, throughout the crisis.

First, he stiff-armed opponents, delaying for weeks before responding to their demands.

Then he and his allies tried to fight the rebels, shaming them publicly and threatening to take away their committee assignments.

Next, Team McCarthy tried to beat them through attrition, forcing the 11 votes over three days that McCarthy lost by nearly identical tallies.

And finally he capitulated. “Cavin’ Kevin,” as Gaetz called him, surrendered.

The one thing McCarthy didn’t try?

Negotiating with Democrats. They could easily have given him the votes he needs to become speaker, in exchange for concessions.

But bipartisanship is a nonstarter in McCarthy’s caucus.

EDIT:  My own opinion - Gaetz and McCarthy deserve each other.  😕

George Santos reminds me of this story.

Boston Globe: How a transsexual, satanist, anarchist trolled New Hampshire voters

The first thing Aria DiMezzo wants to make clear about the giant phallic hieroglyph that someone spray-painted on the side of her car on Saturday night — along with a homophobic slur — was that it was poorly drawn.

The second thing she wants to make clear about the graffiti, which appeared just hours after FoxNews.com ran a story about DiMezzo headlined “ ‘Transsexual Satanist anarchist’ wins GOP nomination for sheriff in NH county,” is that she thought it was hilarious.

“It’s not a hate crime,” DiMezzo said with a smirk. “It’s a gender reveal!”

She is clearly enjoying this very chaotic moment she has created in New Hampshire politics, one that has left DiMezzo — who campaigned on a platform of “F the Police” and does indeed identify as a transsexual Satanist anarchist — as the Republican nominee for sheriff in Cheshire County, in the southwest corner of the state.

“A lot of people are telling me I need to take this more seriously,” she said as she sat on a friend’s porch on a recent day, anxiously chain-smoking Newports. “If I had taken it more seriously, I wouldn’t have won the nomination. Leave the trolling to the pros.”

The comparison is unwise in the extreme. The article does not mention the USA or it's Republican Party at all.

A large number of Republican politicians have said they want to "dismantle the swamp." I believe its clear they are referring to any form of government regulation.

Even the Justice Department, Supreme Court and the FBI are not out-of-bounds. Departments like the EPA, the FDA, and Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Labor are often singled out for weakening.

The fact that Republicans can count on "let's bring on the Biblical Apocalypse" evangelists as their most consistent supporters says a lot about their aspirations for the future governments.

That does not make Freedom Caucus and the like anarchists. It does make them an attractive group to support for business groups wanting less regulation. Taking the Freedom Caucus as an example, McCarthy himself has fundraised for that group of congress people and will do so again.

In a similar vein groups like Freedom Caucus are 'strong' on 'law and order' meaning for example they would be happy if police to beat black lives matter simply for holding an offensive banner like the good old days.

Lastly, the congress people you refer to are much the same set supporting Donald Trump as the rightfully elected King President. Once again, one million miles from any kind of anarchist.

Some people have drunk too much Trump Kool-Aid. Now some of Marjorie Greene's own followers are turning on her for voting for McCarthy. This MAGA crap is really toxic.
