I like the "gone to hell" comment. Have you ever listened to Stern? It was already there.

Couple of quick takes from around the web today:

https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2023/01/08/the-clock-starts-ticking-on-mccarthys-speakership-00076906 << outlines all the concessions McCarthy made to be speaker

What planet is this moron on? Subpoenaing the DOJ? How about first responding to the one they sent to you regarding January 6, which you ignored? Then we'll talk.

I guess the Republicans will be keeping themselves busy over the next 2 years investigating...Hunter Biden's laptop. Yes, because that's a top-shelf, high-priority issue that Americans really care about 🙄

The Washington Post - Fani Willis, the Georgia prosecutor investigating Trump, has taken on seemingly untouchable targets

09 Jan 2023

The question this time is whether a former president, Donald Trump, conspired with his allies to break the law and attempt to overturn the 2020 election.

Willis, Fulton County’s district attorney*, finds herself at the center of an inquiry with the potential to make history and influence the course of the next presidential vote.

A special grand jury convened as part of the investigation has completed its work and submitted a report that could include recommendations for charges, a judge announced Monday.

The judge scheduled a Jan. 24 hearing to determine whether to release the report publicly. Willis could file charges in the case in the coming weeks.

Willis launched her investigation after reports that Trump called the Georgia secretary of state on Jan. 2, 2021, and pressed him to “find” additional votes to overturn Joe Biden’s victory in the state.

It has since expanded to examine other alleged attempts by Trump allies to interfere with the democratic process in Georgia. ...

Observers say the threat to Trump is real and immediate, and that the Fulton investigation could make him the first sitting or former president to be indicted on criminal charges. ...

The allegations are very serious,” Willis told The Washington Post. “If indicted and convicted, people are facing prison sentences.”

* Fani Willis has a reputation as a "pit bull" prosecutor, unafraid to investigate sensitive or seemingly untouchable targets.

As seen on the web overnight:

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/top-10-important-things-know-speaker-mccarthy-rcna64934 >> McCarthy is not all he's cracked up to be

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/classified-docs-gop-fails-find-parallel-trump-rcna65085 >> I just know the Republicans will be all over Biden for having classified documents stored somewhere off-site - but the responses between Biden and Trump couldn't be any more different

https://abovethelaw.com/2023/01/right-wing-plan-to-restore-trump-to-white-house-falls-flat-at-scotus-shocker/ >> What a crackpot scheme this was, like it was ever going to achieve anything 😄

The NY Times -  Trump’s Longtime Finance Chief Sentenced to 5 Months in Jail

breaking

Allen H. Weisselberg, once one of Donald J. Trump’s most loyal lieutenants, was sentenced on Tuesday to five months at the Rikers Island jail complex for his role in a tax fraud scheme that led to the conviction of the Trump Organization last year.

A state court judge handed down the sentence after Mr. Weisselberg, 75, who worked for the Trump family for the past half-century, testified as the prosecution’s star witness at the trial of the company.

Mr. Weisselberg, its former chief financial officer, had been facing years in prison.

Under a plea deal, he agreed to testify in exchange for a punishment that, with good behavior, might last no more than 100 days.  ...

The company, which was convicted on all 17 counts of tax fraud and other financial crimes, will be sentenced on Friday. It faces up to $1.6 million in penalties.

The Don will be getting worried...  😉

I dunno, remember all the times when everyone said, "oh this time it will definitely be the end of Trump"? The Access Hollywood tape. The Stormy Daniels thing. His taxes. Two impeachments. And on and on and on it goes.

Yet he still completed 4 years - somehow - as president. I'm optimistic but also pessimistic at the same time.

The shape of things to come ...

The NY Times -  Divided House Approves G.O.P. Inquiry Into ‘Weaponization’ of Government

breaking

WASHINGTON - A divided House voted on Tuesday to launch a wide-ranging investigation into federal law enforcement and national security agencies, as Republicans promised to use their new power in Congress to scrutinize what they said was a concerted effort by the government to silence and punish conservatives at all levels, from protesters at school board meetings to former President Donald J. Trump.

On a party-line vote of 221-211 with all Democrats opposed, the House approved the formation of the Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, which is to be chaired by Representative Jim Jordan, Republican of Ohio, the incoming chairman of the Judiciary Committee and a staunch ally of Mr. Trump.

Mr. Jordan, who was deeply involved in Mr. Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, has for months been investigating what he says is a bias in federal law enforcement against conservatives.

EDIT

From the same article:

[Republicans] say they have modeled the new subcommittee after the well-respected Church Committee, referring to a 1970s investigation by Senator Frank Church, Democrat of Idaho, that uncovered decades of intelligence and civil liberties abuses, including the surveilling of civil rights groups.

But Representative Jim McGovern, Democrat of Massachusetts, said the panel was more akin to the notorious House Un-American Activities Committee, which demonized Americans suspected of being sympathetic to communism.

I call it the McCarthy committee, and I’m not talking about Kevin; I’m talking about Joe,” Mr. McGovern said, adding: “This committee is nothing more than a deranged ploy by the MAGA extremists who have hijacked the Republican Party and now want to use taxpayer money to push their far-right conspiracy nonsense.”

The matching opinion piece in the NY Times is entitled:  "The Chaos Caucus Is Now in Charge - The Not-So-Tender Mercies of the House Wing-Nuts"   🙂
