Rikkitic:  If I was a real Republican sitting on one of those committees, I would feel compelled to resign.

Would be good if this happened. Maybe someone will actually bother to properly check the candidates this time.

To everyone, let's keep this thread for Trump and use the new thread for other people: Political deplorables thread (geekzone.co.nz)

The Guardian - Opinion - Trump is trying to make a comeback. It’s not working.

21 Jan 2024

Once again, the legal pitfalls and enthusiasm deficit that plague Donald Trump’s bid for the 2024 Republican nomination are on display.

On Thursday, a federal judge imposed $938,000 in sanctions on Trump and his lawyers.

Meanwhile, an appearance touted by Trump as a major campaign event was nothing more than a closed-door speech to deep-pocketed election-deniers at a Trump property.

For those looking for uplift from a Trump campaign, those days are over.

Rather, personal grievance and claims of a stolen 2020 election will likely be his dominant themes.

For the 45th president, that may bring catharsis.

For everyone else in the Republican party, that spells chaos, headache and the possibility of another Trump defeat at the hands of Joe Biden and the Democrats.

"An appearance..." - is this the South Carolina rally I heard he was doing/going to do? Or am I getting my "rallies" mixed up?

A couple of news stories I saw around the web today relating to Trump:

https://www.newsweek.com/steve-bannon-issues-warning-donald-trump-1775612 >> one MAGA moron (Steve Bannon) turns on another MAGA moron (Lindsey Trump-ballcup-holding Graham). This is the rally I was thinking of above

https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/donald-trump-ditch-truth-social-for-twitter-facebook-1234665307/ >> Trump looks set to abandon Truth Social in favour of returning to Facebook/Twitter. Bet all those Truth Social investors are really pleased with their investment in his platform (not).

I know it's difficult given the subject matter but can we please not go too far into the gutter with the relationship descriptions?

Sorry - that was a description from a recent book about Trump's presidency that I read. My apologies for any offense caused.

The Guardian - Trump’s golf course photo with Philadelphia mob boss raises questions

23 Jan 2023

Merlino was convicted on racketeering charges in 2001, and spent a decade in prison.

He was imprisoned again in 2018, after pleading guilty to a gambling charge, then released in 2020.

Speaking to CBS in 2013, Trump was asked if he had “ever knowingly done business with organised crime”.

He said: “You know, growing up in New York and doing business in New York, I would say there might have been one of those characters along the way, but generally speaking I like to stay away from that group.

“I have met on occasion a few of those people. They happen to be very nice people.

He added: “You just don’t want to owe them money. Don’t owe them money.”

As much as I detest Trump, he is known for posing for pictures with almost anyone who asks. Without some context, I would not be inclined to attach any particular significance to this.

His usual response when backed into a corner like this is "I don't know them" or "I barely know them", bit hard to admit this though when there's a picture of all you like that however.

All he has to do is say “That’s Marla, yeah, that’s my wife” when shown the photo.
