I think some people still can't get past the trope that Jewish people = zionist.

Completely different things.

Trump has another go at declaring victory and says "as we consider winding down our great military efforts". Part (5) looks particularly silly after Trump allowed Israel to bomb Iran's half of South Pars predictably leading Iran to bomb the Qatari half:

and the marines are on the way and Israeli and US bombing is continuing.

Nato withdraws from Iraq several hundred military trainers:

https://www.wsj.com/livecoverage/iran-us-israel-war-updates-2026/card/nato-withdraws-personnel-from-iraq-NAfw3x3xaAycy7T6i0ye

The mission will continue remotely from Italy apparently.

Starmer will allow Trump to use British bases for strikes related to opening Hormuz:

https://www.bbc.com/news/live/ce84073mr06t

Starmer has said Britain will not conduct any strikes itself. Classic Starmer. Even so, this is likely to be seen by Iran as a direct alignment with the US and subsequently could easily lead to increased direct British involvement in the war.

The rising injury toll in Israel, while it does include things like injuries running to shelters, shows the constant pressure from Iran during Israel's operations is probably a lot greater than the limited news allowed by the military censorship rules in place:

Edit: It's also worth noting Israel is currently engaged in major ground operations in Lebanon, basically a war there, and no doubt a source of combat injuries. Also, there is speculation that a larger invasion into the country of Lebanon is imminent.

Technofreak: You really hit the nail on the head here. The Zionists/Israelis have been a major irritation n this area one way or another since 1949.

In my opinion, the Levant/the Eastern Mediterranean has been f____ed even before Christ's arrival.

But saying "The Zionists/Israelis have been a major irritation in this area one way or another since 1949" is reductionist

It's similar to the oversimplification "The Sunnis/Shias have been a major irritation in this area one way or another since 632."

Both slip into sectarian generalization, even if that’s not your intention.

I have no problem with blaming leadership such as Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump, Pete Hegseth, Israel Katz ...

But broad statements about entire peoples start sounding like dog whistles, and they don’t help us understand what’s actually going on.

I'd suggest blaming the true culprits: choices of governments, parties, and leaders, not whole peoples.

Yes there has been sectarian violence for thousands of years, nothing new there.  I'm not blaming whole people's, Zionists are a subset of the Jewish people. Many Jews are opposed to what has gone on.

A very quick and dirty Readers Digest version of what I was getting at.

Jews, Arabs and other nationalities lived in relative peace in the area of Palestine until the state of Israel was created and the Zionists chose to disregard rules under which Israel was created. The Zionists grabbed more and more land and settled more people than was agreed to, displacing more and more of those who originally lived there. Thus causing the unrest and resentment of the Israelis from the Palestinians we see through to this day. Hezbollah would have no support in Palestine if it weren’t for the actions of the Israeli government.

The British were responsible for policing the establishment of the state of Israel. Britian was essentially broke after WWII and couldn't afford the military manpower to police it effectively. The British handed the responsibility over to the UN who didn't a very good job, hence the Zionists just went ahead and did as they pleased.

An unusually blunt editorial from the NYT - worth reading ...

The NY Times - Editorial - Trump Is Hiding the Truth About the War in Iran  (unlocked link)

March 21, 2026

From his first announcement of the attack on Iran on Feb. 28, President Trump has issued a stream of falsehoods about the war.  ...

Lying is standard behavior for Mr. Trump, of course. His political career began with a lie about Barack Obama’s birthplace, and he has lied about his business, his wealth, his inauguration crowd size, his defeat in the 2020 election and so much more.

A CNN tally of Mr. Trump’s falsehoods during one part of his first term found that he averaged eight false claims per day.

Many people are so accustomed to his lies that they hardly notice them anymore. ...

There’s an important dynamic in U.S. politics that often gets overlooked in Middle East discussions: the role of Christian Zionism in shaping American support for Israeli policies.

A significant segment of the American evangelical movement believes that the modern State of Israel plays a central role in biblical “end‑times” prophecy. For these groups, supporting Israeli expansion, settlement growth, and confrontation with regional adversaries isn’t just geopolitics. It’s part of a religious narrative about triggering the Rapture.

This isn’t fringe. It has influenced mainstream U.S. politics for decades: Senator Lindsey Graham, the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), Prominent evangelical leaders like John Hagee

A good number of rich and powerful evangelical actively lobby U.S. politicians to take harder pro‑Israel positions, often more extreme than those held by many Jewish Americans.

The result is that Christian Zionists in the U.S. have encouraged and amplified the most hardline elements of Israeli Zionism.

They literally want the apocalypse, to bring the second coming of Christ.

They influence shapes Congress, media narratives, and U.S. foreign policy in ways that people outside the U.S. often underestimate.

Needless to say actively wanting to bring the end of the world to fulfill a Biblically prophecy is a bad thing.

Now who has the cards?
Paying for the drones and missiles your opponent fires at you is a new war winning strategy.
MAGA logic of stable geniuses.

Makes one wonder, if you are going to end up buying Iranian oil at an inflated price anyways.
If you had offered a great deal in the negotiations before war, maybe?

roobarb:
gzt:  With the marines arriving in the gulf next week I'm guessing Trump will have another go at a market calming victory declaration around landing time.

Where will they go and what will they be able to achieve?

Why the U.S. is sending 2,500 marines to the Gulf — and what they might do there

I'm guessing the original plan was knocking out all offensive and defensive capability by now, then using the marine force to take Kharg island, probably covered by the carrier Gerald Ford.

It was a bad plan to begin with. That plan may still go forward.

Trump gives ultimatum to Iran after getting bad reviews for his war aims success message - Open Hormuz now or I will destroy all power plants in the country starting with the capital city power plant:

Iran has not capitulated to any threat. There is no chance Iran will cave to this one. Unfortunately it is a continuation of the Shock and Awe doctrine that aims in large part to intimidate the civilian population and cause the rapid collapse of civil society. Shock and Awe failed to achieve it's objectives in Iraq and will fail in Iran.

Also needless to say - it is a war crime.
