So much winning... "Government’s Regulatory Standards Bill to cost $20m per year"

David Seymour can call it DOGE !
Send 8 million real yankee dollars a day to Elon Musk to solve all our problems. :-)

He is so high up the horse on 'holier than thou' responsible spending.

Zinger of the day award goes to Nicola Willis -

"Spare a thought for Chole Swarbrick, she wants to save a planet that she doesn't even live on"

I assume she is referencing the greens alternative budget and Chloe Swarbrick's inability to provide any in depth details when questioned by Jack Tame.

I am sure you will be as shocked as I am to hear that David Seymour's Regulatory Standards Bill will be debated under urgency this week. I suppose we don't really need any further legislative process since we already know that, what was it, 0.3% of submissions were in favour of it, and in any case it's in the coalition agreement so Luxon's hands are tied.

Democracy? Who needs that?

That is certainly better taste than W.Peters' sausage-eater - homophobic and misogynistic remarks. Likewise lacking accuracy. Peters did somewhat later correct part of that remark, without removing the homophobia and misogyny of course.

The Parliamentary privileges committee handing suspension from parliament for 21 days is unprecedented, in a bad way. Nothing in the public statements of Judith Collins the chairperson tries to justify those unprecedented terms of suspension in any way.

Brownlee speaker of the house has vaguely claimed something about 'ancient rights'. The fact is these conventions in New Zealand were adopted in an effort to prevent MPs bunking off when they should be in the chamber. Brownlee cites no precedent.

The government would be mad to vote in favor of this committee report and the suspensions.

Thanks, Luxon.

We now will have less money in pockets, thanks to increase of minimum Kiwisaver from 3% to 4%, and less money in the future with decreasing government contribution to $260.72/year.

But let's give business "a tax incentive, worth $1.7b a year, for businesses."

Increase in the default* rate I believe. You can still elect to stay at 3%. Your employer is required to match the higher default rate if you do it so there's an increased employer contribution to go with it.

The 3 to 4% is optional (for now), so you can stay on the lower rate if you choose. Note they are also lifting the matching rate, to 3.5% next year and 4% in 2028, so employers are going to have to chip in a bit more too. I'd suggest that in many cases, the additional 1% of employers contributions will readily offset the reduction from the Govt (anyone earning about $52k at 0.5% incr in employer contribution).

Means testing for $180k upwards for the Govt contribution, this seems like a bit of a token gesture (essentially, if you are on $180k or more, I'd suggest you'll get $0 Govt contribution to KS)

Means testing for best start - fits within the Govt's philosophy that those that can afford it, should and those that need help can get it. By and large, having children is a conscious choice ( I get that there are unplanned pregnancies), and if your income is above a certain level, then I have no issue with not getting an additional payment from the govt (devil will be in the details).

Need to see some more detail on the KS change but the Budget website has:

  •

Employees will be able to temporarily opt down to the current 3 per cent rate, if they choose, and still be matched at that rate by their employer. They may wish to do that, for example, if they feel they are unable for a time to afford an increased contribution.

Financial distress was mentioned as a reason you might want to stay a 3% but doesn't seem there's any requirement to prove that, just that you can elect to stay at 3%. Think she said you can do that for 12 months at a time in the speech.

The biggest thing the opposition can poke at is the pay equity bit. They say that they are taking it out of the pockets of working women, that may or may not be correct (and from an optics / perception point of view, it looks bad). Its not "in their pockets" yet, nor are they taking a pay cut, they have shifted the goal posts on comparing like for like skills/jobs/values.

I'm not versed enough either way to argue for or against the proposed changes, I only know how our company pays and women are among the top earners and where men/women share the same role, they are paid on skill/experience which is both lower and higher than some males.

if the KS thing is an "opt down" as above, that may impact a pretty big chunk of the economy and we'll likely see plenty want to stay at 3%, but the extra 0.5 / 1% from employers is a very tempting carrot for you to try and up your contributions. I can already predict my bosses response to the wage bill going up further thanks to a Govt decision.....

Same here, but none of us are teachers or social workers, who are the kind of workers greatly affected by these changes.

Counterpoint: my wife is being paid considerably less than she would be had she not taken 7 years off to be a stay at home mum when our children were young. But that was more than 10 years ago. Any performance gap due to a lack of up to date industry knowledge is long since erased.

Thats ok though, because in return we’re getting [checks notes] nothing at all.

If the market is paying considerably more for someone of your wife's skills / experience, then shouldn't she be able to get market rates? Negotiate higher pay, Change job etc?

I don't mean that to be as pointed as it probably reads, but people can do something about their own situation, particularly if they feel they are being under paid for their skills / experience. If people choose to accept working for less than they may be worth in an open market, then thats their decision?

(again, I realise it reads poorly, but can't think of how else to phrase it)
