We're all sure it will get better, just not when, and that seems to be a theme of this budget.

I think that's most optimistic statement you have made in this entire thread. ;-)

And although it is true that "the employer" needs to raise Kiwisaver contributions, that simply means a lot of people will get 0.5% less pay rise for the next two years in order to compensate. Not many businesses out there that can afford to be that generous even if they want to be.

And I say that as someone who 100% agrees that that part of the policy is a good thing.

Drawing a pretty long bow there, but thats your opinion of course. If you own a business and thats your thoughts on it so be it.

Not a stretch to think some employers will see more contribution as an increase to staff's remuneration package, we may even see more "total package" type contracts where the employers contribution forms part of the overall pay packet. I'm not a big fan of these, but it does create fairness in a workplace.

It's more from the perspective that Bill English's social investment would be paying pretty big dividends if they'd gotten over the line in 2017 and I despair that National seem determined to do anything but that these days.

It seems the cross industry comparators are the real issue, what constitutes like skills?

Nah. It's a money based issue not one based on principle. It introduces massive liabilities to the government and they don't want to pay. It's really that simple.

Although they don't cite the exact document, The Spinoff says:

Some employers use a “total remuneration” model, where your KiwiSaver contribution is technically included in your salary package. So that 4% might be coming from money you would’ve otherwise been paid in cash.

In fact, Treasury’s own analysis expects 80% of that extra contribution to be offset by lower pay rises.

How is this a surprise to anyone? There’s no magic money tree. The money has to come from somewhere.

Well, exactly. And it's what happened in Australia when compulsory super was introduced. After 30 years here it will be shaken through as well.

Personally, I think it's a good thing, and NZ should have followed suit from Australia long ago, but it is a thing, and doing it in the middle of a recession is going to hurt the people who can least afford it the most. That said it doesn't start till the middle of next year, I believe, and things might be marginally less painful by then.

Having said that, you'd think the party of best economic management would have remembered to account for it in their costings. Or, alternatively, they're going to do the exact same thing - give 0.5% lower pay increases.

Regarding the budget - Jack Tame did an excellent interview with Nicola and pointed out this budget is just costing the country more, even more than the previous government but doesn’t have a worldwide pandemic as an excuse:

But you're not getting a 0.5% lower pay increase, you are getting a guaranteed 0.5% pay increase, it just doesn't go in your back pocket just yet. Whether you get 2.5% in your hand and 0.5% in KS or 3% in your hand, its still a 3% pay increase.

Yes, but 15 years ago I was getting 17% from my employer on top of my pay in Australia. I'm sure it will eventually catch up (or get driven into the ground), but the Aus system is way ahead and including the pay overall. It's an unwinnable game of catchup within NZ.

That's pretty good! I only got the 10%.

I guess we don’t need to worry about a bunch of teenagers getting sent to boot camps after all. Nobody is going to catch them.

after RNZ revealed a police directive to staff said they would no longer be investigating allegations of shoplifting below $500 regardless of lines of inquiry as part of a new nationwide directive.
