I guess we don’t need to worry about a bunch of teenagers getting sent to boot camps after all. Nobody is going to catch them.

after RNZ revealed a police directive to staff said they would no longer be investigating allegations of shoplifting below $500 regardless of lines of inquiry as part of a new nationwide directive.

IIRC, for ordinary people, the investigation limit was at the $1000-$2000 level for years now anyway.

I have little confidence in police these days as they have repeatedly been worthless.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/school-lunch-woes-dead-larva-found-in-west-auckland-school-meal/ONRBGMFJQZDGVHBYRCFM7QVMEE/

  • A dead larva has been found in a school meal at a West Auckland school.
  • The Minister in charge of the school lunch programme, David Seymour, says MPI will get to the bottom of it.

What happened to Seymour's promise that all the issues with his new! improved! school lunch programme would be resolved "by the start of term 2"? Another broken promise 🙄

Maybe if he didn't waste money on his stupid, pointless, divisive Treaty bill under the guise of "just having the discussion" and instead focused that funding towards something important (like school lunches), crap like this wouldn't have happened? Just a thought.

The last sentence is the old trickle down illusion.

I'd think a number of small business owners would just pocket the savings, or buy a new UTE... I definitely don't expect higher salaries because of this, like we didn't see lower rentals because of the landlord tax breaks.

A stain on this country.

Te Pāti Māori MPs suspended in harshest punishment Privileges Committee has ever handed out

After the amendments, the first question was whether Hana-Maipi Rawhiti-Clarke be suspended for seven days. The ayes won, and she was suspended.

Debbie Ngarewa-Packer's severe sanction, a suspension for 21 days, was the second question. The ayes won this too.

The last vote was for Rawiri Waititi, also a suspension for 21 days. The vote was the same.

Nobody thinks that parliament should be a free-for-all. But this punishment was utterly outrageous, and everyone who voted for it ought to be dying of shame.

Probably should have just been 7 days but having a hard time finding any sympathy at all for the Maori Party over this, and I say that as a former Maori Party voter.

I think anything less would have been met with even more distain from TPM, they already believe they are beyond the rules and have shown contempt at every turn for the rules and processes of parliament. A slap on the wrist was never going to get the message across, and to be honest, I don't think the 21 days will either

I don't think that's correct; they attempted numerous times to engage by having experts explain tikanga to the committee, who wouldn't hear a bar of it.

You don't see them doing a haka every time they disagree with something the government is doing, which, frankly, would be nearly 100% of what this particular government has done. This was an exceptional occasion, where the bill in question would have fundamentally gutted the agreement their people made with the Crown, that very agreement being the reason there is even a Westminster parliament here to begin with.

You're probably right, 21 days won't deter them from doing it again, should the occasion arise again. It wouldn't stop me either. Nor would it stop you, I suspect, if you felt strongly enough about an issue.

Ultimately they swore an oath to represent their people. They did that, in the long traditional manner of those people. In that time, on that issue, what they did was completely appropriate.

If you don't like the institution or the rules, then make motions and campaign for the rules to be changed before you try a stunt that openly goes against the rules of the institution you elected to be part of. Tikanga doesn't override the rules of parliament, and the processes behind it - they only wanted to engage with it, like with everything TPM, if it was on their terms.

It wasn't appropriate, just like it wasn't appropriate when Genter crossed the floor to get in the face of another MP.

Also, TPM want to act like it's crucial they be there to represent their people but couldn't even bother to show up to the Budget debate, which the suspension was deferred specifically so they could be there to represent their concerns. They chose not to. By their own inference I can only assume they don't think being there matters much at all.

So which MPs do the rules of parliament apply to and which ones don't they apply to?

All of them. But clearly, exceptions can be made. Do I think a haka is appropriate when the government debates a bill to give tax breaks to landlords? No, and they would deserve a slap on the wrist for it. Do I think they should get a far harsher punishment than someone who, for example, actually punched another MP? No, that's outrageous.

EDIT: accidentally a word

I think the punishment was two-fold -

First the breach for leaving their seat, secondly, the non-compliance with the privileges committee. The committee may (or may not) have been within their rights to not allow a Tikanga expert to give testimony, I don't know the ins and outs, but I'd hazard a guess that the "expert" would be neither objective nor independent. If they were allow, what then if the Govt found "an expert" that countered TPM's expert (assuming too the Govts "expert" would similarly be neither objective nor independent)? Where does it stop?

Tau Henare was also brought before the committee, but he fronted and apologised, escaping punishment, perhaps theres a lesson there for TPM - own your actions?

And where do we draw the line for "exceptions"? The term slippery slope comes to mind, and everyone would try and justify why the rules don't apply to them in a situation where they don't agree with them.

Tau Henare was the one who got punched. It was Trevor Mallard who did the punching. Henare called Mallard "Sharon" (which is objectively hilarious and no worse than what Winston Peters calls other MPs in every speech). But anyway - I think I've been pretty clear I think that for now at least, the exception is pretty unique to the situation.
